Samsung SpinPoint M6 500GB laptop drive finally on sale... in France
We've been wondering where Samsung's 9.5mm 500GB SpinPoint M6 laptop drive has been hiding, and it turns out that it's just been vacationing in France. No word on when these might make it Stateside, but if you're desperate (or French), your lappy can unbuckle that belt another notch or two for just €197 ($306).

Did anyone actually hit the read link? I don't speak french but, clearly, they say it has 10 - 15 days delivery time.
10 - 15 days? You know what that means on the internet? It means they don't have it. They won't have it for another 2 weeks. And depending on how trustworthy they are, they might not even have a clue as to when they will get it. I never order from these sites because, invariably, there will be further delivery delays.
This is just a scam.

Ace b @ May 6th 2008 11:11PM
Yeah, this doesn't help us at all.
It's more like rubbing it in our faces by the fact that we can't actually get it.
Whoever made that suggestion for a Engadget Import site was thinking ahead of his time cause if I wanted to be depressed,I could just go there and knowingly get disappointment.Unlike how they do it now, where it pops up in our faces and gives our day a rather low point.
Oh well,at least the gunmetal ps3 is coming to US of A.That makes my day a little better.
gad get @ May 7th 2008 1:08AM
Wow, you're easily depressed. And I suppose seeing a dog take a bathroom break on your front lawn makes you burst into tears?
ugg.tryptophan @ May 6th 2008 11:28PM
now they can store all the information they need on cheese, wine, lovemaking, disco, and techtonik

... socially accepted public nudity, legal use of soft drugs, blatantly pornographic TV commercials in prime time, complete degradation of family values...
What? What's wrong? :|
tony @ May 7th 2008 1:43AM
Wait, gad get, were you seriously listing those as negatives?

I already have 500gb drive laptop in my MacBook Pro a month ago, and i order it from OWC (yes, they are in the state!!), and it was cheaper too! ($280, and its Toshiba, its quite, and decent speed)!!!
Come on engadget! this is nothing new, slow day, huh?
Geno Endicott @ May 6th 2008 11:37PM
But isn't the M6 only 9.5mm? Which means it can go in the Macbook, not just the Pro.
catachip @ May 7th 2008 12:29AM
I think the one you are talking about is the 12.5 mm drive, that can only fit in the 17" MBP. This is a standard 9.5 mm height that can fit in the 15" MBP and the MacBook.
spx @ May 7th 2008 12:39AM
ok, that make sense. this is the smaller size drive. oops, my bad! lol

Seriously....I want to know.... who is really going to put a 500 GB drive in a laptop ? Certainly not at that price point. I can understand having an external 500GB, that would make sense; it lends itself to being pushed from the "home" / fixed desktop, to the lappie, to the media centre pc.
I can only assume that a possible use would be to store movies and music, but again...an external is gonna be better for this. Using a laptop as an HTPC doesn't seem to make a lot of sense on a dollar basis. Better now to splash out on a WD Caviar 640 + AMD 780 board + AMD 4350e + case = $350, and you have another machine...
I dunno....
nikster @ May 7th 2008 10:06AM
wot? i am gonna get one. either this one or the new 7200 / 320GB hitachi.
asking why would you want more storage in your laptop is like asking... why would you want to breathe air, why would you want to eat food why would you want to make sweet love to your girlfriend... it's not a question you ask. especially not on engadget.
adrian @ May 7th 2008 7:21AM
oops forgot the ram...
+2GB ram + linux = $380
i still dunno
glebec @ May 7th 2008 8:04AM
What about peripherals? Especially a nice monitor if you deal with photo/video editing. That will bump up your $350 machine to quite a bit more... Oh, and what about dual or even triple booting? Linux can be very lean, but Windows XP or (god forbid) Vista with a bunch of games installed isn't. That right there is a good reason for more internal space.
Some people want just one computer - a portable desktop replacement - and they want everything on it for maximum portability. Not very hard to understand IMHO. And given how remarkably cheap magnetic storage is, I will be upgrading to at *least* a 320 GB internal soon almost without blinking. I imagine that within 1 year the 500 GB drives will be discounted enough for me to consider as well.
jonathan @ May 7th 2008 8:11AM
Ehhh...I havent had much luck with Samsung drives...Maybe they have gotten better but I had four die on me in a NAS box (all sata's), their replacement support isnt that bad, but the drives I got back went bad too. Decided to grab a couple WD's instead and havent had a problem....maybe just my luck!
xValentine @ May 7th 2008 8:26AM
Now Samsung, after you are done with the frenchies, go take it somewhere where there are alot of people who are craving for that. cough*USA*cough.
And after that, do the 1TB next. :)

Hank Scorpio: By the way, Homer. What's your least favourite country, Italy or France?
Homer: France.
Hank Scorpio: Heh-heh. Nobody ever says Italy.
Anthony @ May 8th 2008 11:13AM
I am French and I live in America. I don't really care about that hard drive or what some Americans think about us. However, I expect the Endgadget writers to stick to their subject matter instead of antagonizing their readers. Endgadget is read and appreciated worldwide by non-Americans. Peace.
Eric Walker @ May 9th 2008 3:14PM
What are you talking about?
" I expect the Endgadget writers to stick to their subject matter instead of antagonizing their readers."
The writer of this didn't antagonize the French, the people who commented on this news did.
Anthony @ May 9th 2008 4:10PM
I see your point but when I read : "...but if you're desperate (or French)..." - that's a poor attempt to be sarcastic and that's what - in my opinion - sparked the whole French bashing. It doesn't take much.
Macfan @ May 17th 2008 3:09AM
The original Engadget article wasn't French bashing. By "if you're desperate (or French)", they didn't imply the two were the same. They simply meant you can the get the drive 1) through convoluted means if you're really desperate to get it (since it's now on sale somewhere in the world) or 2) easily if you live in France where it's now being sold.
