MSI Wind gets a price: $610
We've gotten a ton of info on the MSI Wind, but so far pricing details have been a closely-guarded secret. Good thing we've got wonder-importers Expansys to help us out, though -- they've just listed the Wind at the pretty decent price of $610. That's not bad for a 10-inch screen, 1.6GHz processor (supposedly an Atom), 1GB of RAM, an 80GB disk and XP, but let's hope things get even cheaper when this thing hits the US for real.[Via UMPC Portal]

Freakin' wow...... did these people just gave up In making low-cost, ultRaportable laptopS?!?!? ...i guess the new race is To $1000
shame on you skalawags!
...a subliminal first...
everyone wants more ram, bigger screen, wifi, big hd, webcam, etc. for under $500... if you want cheap go with the eee pc
I'd say the price is pretty reasonable, honestly I'm waiting for flash to come down I don't want a umpc with a hard drive, I don't like the fact that they're moving towards windows but I will be able to perform some basic cad functions with this since it has windows so I'm going to deal with it I guess. Like pavanderh said though, bigger screen bigger ram hard drive, these things increase cost if you want cheap then get a 7 inch eee
Agree, it's not reasonably-priced by a long shot.
Now ladies and gentleman, let's make these cut-down computers and price them exhorbitantly. Everyone's into these now!
Marketing sez: "Agreed!"
Don't worry, prices will drop big time once the early adopters stop buying and sense returns to the market.
$560 for the Linux version but remember this is a UK version import.
Steve.
3 Cell battery???
How long will this operate on battery power alone? sounds like less than 2hrs
Battery life should be about 3 hours. I'm expecting +10-20% more than the Eee PC 900.
Steve / Chippy
This is expensive to me. Perhaps if it were an 80gb SSD drive for the price yes even would consider it a deal but an 80gb disk drive no way.
Not sure why you were low ranked but I agree about the SSD part.
A mobile device like this would benefit a lot more with it, shock, drop & battery life wise.
Still, I'd buy it when comparing it to other ultraportables.
Brilliant product like most subnotes but ruined by every other company trying to get involved and introducing stupid prices.
i was looking forward to the msi wind more than any other subnote but ruined by the stupid price. Lets hope the price falls quickly for release date.
There's still hope on Acer's subnotebook, the price will start at $300 and the top spec'd version will be $450.
Thats tough to accomplish with the USD being so so weak
I thought competition was supposed to lower prices?
@brie987:
Mate, an average 32GiB SSD will set you back at least $130, so demanding an 80GiB SSD in a $610 product seems a tad silly.
Every time news about budget laptops come out, my dream of the 199$ just get's further and furher away...
Guess I'll have to stick with paper and pencil for a while longer.
me too!
haha
i was waiting for this MSI since i was dissapointed with the HP's price.
Since Wind will apparently be quite pricey we'll all just have to wait for breeze.
Expansys are *always* overpriced, especially on pre-release products.
Calm down and wait for real numbers. Also, remember the 8.9" version will be cheaper - MSI said they intended to price it at or below the Eee's price.
That's a bit steep but if they made the RAM 2 GB I'd be sold. I've got no qualms with the Atom CPU and 80 GB.
wasnt the wind to get a via cpu like the mini note?
also imho the price is too high, considering the cheap components. the most expensie parts probably are the 1,8hdd (thanks for not stickin in flash!!!) and, of course, the screen.
i wonder if it would be possible to stick a serious 2,5" drive in such a subnote to get _real_ storage capacity. i always think such nice little lappies would be great multimedia-tanks for music, movies, but with 1,8" thats hard to accomplish and expensive
The Wind PC was going to get an Atom ever since it was announced. Also it does use a 2.5" HD.
I'll just go ahead and add on to the money I am holding onto for an ultra portable subnotebook and drop it all on a truly ultra portable, fully loaded notebook. Like the Lenovo U110 or Sony TZ series......... although that will take a hell of a long time.
im looking at the sony tz too. looks like theres a $300 off coupon: $300 off Sony VAIO TZ Notebooks Coupon Code: TECHBARGAINS300 (Exp 5/21) from techbargains.com. 1800-300 is still way overpriced for a sony. amazing!
That doesn't look like a bad system, so long as you have a decent portable drive to augment the memory.
Dell Vostro is cheaper and faster
i know, just bought one ;)
What chipset ? anyone know the internal details on this?
How does it compare to the ecs g10il ?
intel 945, not 100% sure yet though so don't update the wikipedia page with it.
I am upset, i really wanted to buy this, but for 600 bux i can get a fully functional laptop with all options. If it were 500 dollars i would of bought it without issue.
For crying out loud.
We want CHEAP!
Give us this:
9" Screen
1.2Ghz Celeron/Equiv Atom
1GB RAM
8GB SSD (and an SD port)
Linux
You should be able to give us all of this for $400 at the most.
We don't want a butt-ton of features, we want something that runs fast enough and we can take with us ANYWHERE without a giant carrying case. It doesn't need to run Crysis, it doesn't even need to run WoW. We just want word processing, firefox, and solitaire.
amen to that!
Don't forget that we also want a 5+ hour battery life.
Who's this "we" you're talking about?
How could you possibly live on an 8GB hard drive?
I just want something that I can throw in my backpack without worrying about the screen cracking in two. I want the battery to last long enough that I can just unplug it in the morning and go, using it for all my classes without worrying about toting an AC adapter.
As such, I want something with:
small screen (12" or less)
large battery
Really durable case (magnesium like my evo n410c would be great)
Light.
Something like that for less than $700 would be great. I'm hoping the Wind is durable enough, because I think it'd otherwise fit the description.
@ Sean.
Well said. And touchscreen! Ok and 2gb ram and winxp but that's it. Crap and a webcam and fingerprint reader. Shit. Wifi, bluetooth...gps?
OK. How about just touchscreen and winxp? And uhhh wifi. And err hard qwerty keys.
Oops I turned a clamshell into a umpc in my brain. So strike hard qwerty keys from the record.
For any one interested in this netbook their is a new site following it here;
