Volkswagen to produce 1-Liter car in 2010, should get over 200MPG
Although you can definitely pre-order an Aptera if you're okay with space-aged design, Volkswagen is hoping to provide another option for those looking for ridiculous MPG and a little bit of normalcy in construction. Okay, so maybe the 1-Liter isn't exactly standard fare -- with its plastic / magnesium shell and all-glass roof -- but at least it packs four whole wheels and an iconic VW badge, right? According to Motor Authority, the automaker will be producing said vehicle and pushing it to market as early as 2010, and while the minuscule engine will only take you to 75MPH, it will still seat two people -- one in front of the other, though -- and get around 235MPG. No word on a price or any of that good stuff, but we're hearing that they'll only be produced in "limited numbers" whenever they're launched.

Already cancelled
by the time this thing is produced, its going to cost the same to drive 100km off one litre as it does right now with your average car. gas prices are ridiculous.
oh, and for the americans, its litre (correct spelling, not the broken american-english).
this car makes a lot os sense.
i think the majority of drivers drive to work alone but they carry four extra seats and a lot of dead weight around the extra seats .
also, the speed limit is 70 mph in the uk ,but the top speed of most cars is double that
I personally think it's awesome. If every car had this layout, they could turn every two lane road into a 3 lane, reducing trafic for a few years to come...
And like someone else said, there are loads of small engined cars in europe with pretty decent acceleration... I drive an little 1L Toyota that does nearly 50 MPG, and I wouldn't change it for anything else, specially now FREE of congestion charge from september and a £35 road tax!!!
Wow...That is insane. Where can i find more information about this car?
I can afford a car like this, probably, and I would want it to stand out and be absolutely bizarre. I don't care in the least for normal car designs because that's what my parents would drive. So, yes, I think this is a great idea... EXCEPT that it will be in such limited number and probably be ridiculously expensive that the only statement I'd make is I'm a sucker. What happened to the 'people's car'?
Eco and gas friendly cars are never gonna get off the ground and become main stream if they keep making them so damn ugly. Its almost as if the automakers don't really want to push the green initiative. lol
vertically-opening doors. I thought the coolness factor of that one went out in the 80s...if it ever was cool back then.
Glass roof. How practical is this in summer? Strength? My guess is it was done purely to reduce weight.
If this were for sale, in the US, right now, I'd buy one.
Provided it didn't cost $80000, I'd get it.
I'm driving a Toyota Corolla, and still I'm not getting decent enough gas mileage. I hate living in the country just for this reason.
Hell I had to choose a college in the city because I can't afford a stupid car.
235mpg is worth it, regardless of how it looks, it could look like something an elephant just crapped out and I'd still buy it at 235MPG
Hmmm, I only see a three wheel design. I'd says this looks even weirded than the Aptera.
i thought the same but...there's a fourth wheel in the other photos

...and i bet it goes from 0-60 in 60 seconds!
oooh ooh look at me
"liter"
i just offended your tender british sensibilities. tee hee!
This VW is the future of large cities. I read that it was made to have a consumption of 0.83 liter per 100km but they added some airbags, ABS and ESP to it so now it runs 100km with 1 liter. Not bad...
