Buy.com raised the price. Since it was up last week. I bought one at $550. Should be here today!!! New Egg also had a supply of 50 of them, and they dissapeared quick, and Newegg hasn't done a thing to repost or notify....
heart touching? gonna have to add that to my checklist of things to look for in my next notebook.
The box to my vid card said "Heart Touching."
"8.9" screen does not affect the overall weight of the Eee PC 900, which remains below 1kg allowing children and women to carry it with ease"
WHAT THE FUCK?? Because women usually have trouble carrying laptops?
www.menarebetterthanwomen.com
I dont see why a woman would need a computer, its not required for doing the dishes after all
If they don't have trouble carrying them, then why does mine always complain about carrying mine for me? I've half a mind to not get a lighter one because I don't want to reward her for complaining.
Ordered mine last Thursday, noon, from the 'egg' for $549 (no tax here in GA) and $11 shipping 3 day. Surprised me they were up at Newegg and after I ordered mine and was confirmed I figured I should get a couple more for gifts. The product page was removed minutes later before I could order 2 more lol.
I got mine on Wednesday Night from NewEgg for $549, posted it on the EEEUser forums, and it was gone in 18 hours. I did the same basic shipping, and since I live on the East Coast, should receive it tomorrow. Was debating about shipping, but the NJ warehouse always gets to me next day anyway, so I took the chance, but it came from California.
"I figured I should get a couple more for gifts. "
Umm...can I get on that list? Nice gifts :)
Instead of buying the 12GB XP version, I bought the 20GB Linux version and change it to XP myself. I'm very happy with this purchase =)
Is this still the Celly M?
@Justin
Yeah. I don't think Atom launches until late next month...?
What do you think about the keyboard? Are you happy with it?
I can't decide if I should get the XP (12GB) version or the Linux (20GB). If you buy the Linux and install the XP yourself, how many GB will you have left? Thanks.
When will we get an Atom-based model?
Looks like Amazon.com has the Linux version for $549.
amazon.co.uk has them at $700. It's expensive
Now it's $600? Hahahaha. This is joke now.
It's about $300 more expensive than it should be. Well done Asus, your greed has got the better of you.
because you know how what their profit margin is. good lord.
No, Asus' greed would only have got the better of them if the eee didn't sell. Which it clearly does.
Any chance of a price drop for the 7" model now that this one is out?
doh, meant to reply to Batman who's above you
Anyone want to buy a 7inch with XP SP2 with 2GB ram and 1.3 GHz processor, Full Office and bluetooth, 6GB SSD

aww nuts.... i've been beat to it.
Similar to chirp, I'm wondering when the BEST time to buy an Eee will be. I've been waiting for a screen increase to pull the trigger on one, but I don't want to do it prematurely when theres a new cpu for it around the corner. Also, will we ever see a pricedrop?
hrt, I had convinced myself to buy this current model, especially after the disappointing atom benchmarks. Then the battery thing happened. I don't want to be the guy who doesn't buy anything cause he's always waiting for the next model.
I think the idea behind the Atom is that it will be more efficient, not more powerful. That means less heat and noise as well as increased battery life. The 7" model gets hotter and noisier than my more powerful 15.4" conventional laptop, presumably because the cooling is less efficient. (The bigger laptop has room for heatpipes and a larger but slower fan.) I don't expect that the 900 will be any better until it ditches the Celeron.
Anyone know whether these are comfortable enough to have on ones lap?
In that case, what will the clock speeds for the atom the Eee will use? I guess if I overclocked it to a similar speed it would be much better then the celeron?
alright, whos really buying one?
i would at $400.
Amazon Linux version $549 - http://xrl.in/4ta (Still listed as "Pre-Order")
Amazon Windows version $549 - http://xrl.in/4td (Still listed as "Pre-Order")
I plan to get one. For the last 10 years I've been using an HP Jornada 810 (yeah, I know, it's old) for most of my travelling needs. It's a great little machine, but I've already had to rebuild it once and it's showing signs of failing again. This looks like it should offer the same amount of shock resistance while being roughly the same size, and it's orders of magnitude better than the Jornada. And, interestingly enough, still a lot cheaper than the Jornada was when it was new.
And hopefully I haven't just hopelessly destroyed my geek-cred by admitting to using a 10 year old machine.
One really doesn't get the full experience of how small the Eee series is until you see it in person. Even online videos don't cut it.
That said, $600 is really too much for this. I expected it to be in the $450 range at the most.
Well, I'm no longer complaining about the MSI Wind with the Atom processor at $600.
What ever happened to the low cost mini laptop PCs that were a rage in the news some time ago? Sure, this is a certain market segment, but a lie is a lie and a mystery is this price - MOFO! :)
We've reported previously in the post at Laptoping the Eee PC 900 Windows XP version costs $565.99 at Buy.com. It’s price is actually $549.99. Our mistake.

yeah, actually I just clicked the ZipZoomFly read link, and it looks like they are now selling the XP version for $549

at least at the time I clicked it they were:

This 900 will be an initial "sell out" as those who must have it NOW jump in.
After a month or two at most the selling will slow down as majority of potential buyers weigh the cost of this against a similar HP model.
This will likely force Asus to quickly get more price competitive when the Atom powered machine debuts, in order not to lose sales to HP. IF HP are very clever they too will switch to the Atom CPU and then the price war will begin in earnest.
I sold my 701 in anticipation of the 900 model and still basically want the 900. But I am willing to wait a month or two to see all this play out.
I expect HP will switch to the Isaiah, since it would be a drop-in replacement for the C7-M that they're using now:

I'd been kicking around the idea of getting one of these for business school. Previously I'd had a 15.4" Dell, in the ballpark of 7 or 8 lbs, which was just a pain in the ass to lug to classes.
But at $600 I feel I'd be better off spending another $400 and getting that 12.1" Lenovo sub-3lb-er. Full keyboard, more functionality, still small and light.
Yeah, these systems fit a nice niche, one I thought I was a part of, but I won't go with a shrunken keyboard if I'm paying over $500 (and not getting an Atom.) For me, I'm still better off with a small 12.1" laptop.
too bad they didn't enlarge that cramped keyboard just a little bit - would have bought one. for the same price the 2133 Mini-Note can be had with a real touch typeable keyboard
could you buy a larger hard drive to put in there or what?
Nope, the ssd is built in.
Of course you can always hack it and put in a 32 gb usb drive.
Price in UK : £330.
Current exchange rate : £1.00 = $0.50
Less the dreadful UK premium we pay on tech, $600 seems about right.
Still more than it should be!
So the Windows one says 12gb ssd, and the Linux one says 12gb - 4gb ssd and the rest is flash memory?
Honestly... why not get the windows one and add flash? The Linux one looks like the shit one now...
I've managed to hold back from pulling the trigger on an EEE since the 701 release, and honestly now I think I am just going to wait for the next Macbook refresh. A few inches bigger, but full-fleged laptop. I fully understand portability and weight, but honestly what bag am I going to carry it in that doesn't look like a purse? Most likely I'll end up using a 13" laptop bag which I might as well carry a 13" lappy in. Optical drive and some real hard drive space for dumping photo's/video on is just too important for a tiny bit of savings.
Sweet, I've been waiting for a 9" Eee PC. Going to put one on order http://shrinkify.com/6ee
