ASUS wants you to know that women and children are strong enough for an Eee PC
So it turns out the product page for the Eee PC 900 includes this unusual line: "8.9-inch screen does not affect the overall weight of the Eee PC 900, which remains below 1kg -- allowing children and women to carry it with ease." Hey now, even putting aside the fact that calling women weak went out of vogue decades ago, let's also not harsh on the really muscular kids. For example, Richard Sandrak (above), the world's strongest boy. That little dude could probably lift his weight in Eee PCs, so don't mess, ASUS.

Nah, it just f***s with your muscles, tendons, and tissues... this kid's going to have issues when he gets older.
That kiddo is scary....
Wait why are we discussing weird boyo in a news article about EEE PC? :P
Because no one cares about the Eee PC now, or at least not until it can rival the Wind on price
Most of my 15 year old friends (and myself) are 5'11 - 6'...
5' 10" ? OMG!!!!!! bbq zomg!!!!!!
jesus wept.
such discrimination! what about wimpy little girly men? can they carry it with ease?
Discrimination. "Girly" men.
the kid comes free with every eee pc purchase.
after reading that, I'm left with the resounding urge to scream...
"Women are weak!" Don't try to be so politically correct engadget. For all of women's competencies, I would hope that everyone would still have the... balls to admit that men are naturally physically larger and stronger than women, which would lead to the obvious conclusion that women are relatively weak.
yeah. it is a stupid article.
So weak that they can't handle a laptop heavier than 1kg?
The offspring of Xerxes and China of Hulk and She-Hulk.
Taking all bets-
I also offer video poker!
*comes
Damn Engadget! Why do you taunt me so?!
I sent Asus an email about this about a week ago asking if they knew they were opening up a public relations shitstorm opportunity. Then again, i ended the email by mentioning that I thought it was funny
Dear Customer,
Thank you for informing us about shit storms. We at ASUS strive to avoid shit storms as our Pledge to you. Thank you for purchasing ASUS products.
Actually, we have a lady at work here, that made the boss buy her a new laptop because the 17" was too heavy for her to carry.
OMG, never thought that engadget become a police force for political correctness. FYI, an average man IS stronger then an average woman and there is nothing wrong if a company takes this into account when they design products or in marketing. If you don't want to admit some fact only because it is not an "accepted" point of view then you are not better then all these intelligent design people (men are stronger for evolutionary reasons). Here is a quote from wikipedia:
"By the end of puberty, adult men have heavier bones and nearly twice as much skeletal muscle. Some of the bone growth (e.g., shoulder width and jaw) is disproportionately greater, resulting in noticeably different male and female skeletal shapes. The average adult male has about 150% of the lean body mass of an average female, and about 50% of the body fat."
YES, women are weaker, fatter and there is nothing wrong with this.
Omg sexisms!¡!
Yeah, because its completely ridiculous to think that men could have been designed stronger than women (generally) by a higher power than to think that it could have just randomly occurred by evolution, even though men and women lived under the same conditions. Seriously, I don't get it, don't get me worng, I'm not saying evolution is false but bashing people who have an equally plausible theory? C'mon dude.
Are you serious Zach? Intelligent design and religion in general are not theories, they are dogmas. They have nothing to do with intelligence or thinking. If somebody tries to use them in order to explain physical world then he/she is a moron.
One of the reasons why women are weaker is that they used to spent most of their lives being pregnant (people used to live to only 30-40 max and women were giving birth to many many kids because most of them would die before becoming adults) that is unable to hunt or do other physically intense activities. So instead of building female's muscles (that they would not have been used anyway) these resources (food) were used to produce more babies or feed males. The subspecies of humans who used this kind of adaptation were more successful then the ones that did not and we are the offspring of the former ones.
Good point about pregnancy, I hadn't thought of that. And yes I am serious. How can you say that one theory is better than another? I know that you will say that evolution is based upon tangible things and intelligent design is not, but I beg to differ. How do you know that life the way we know it even existed billions of years ago? Do you have conclusive evidence to prove to me that there is no God? I am not closed minded, just inquisitive, and to me the most logical explanation is a higher power. Not necessarily by intelligent design mind you, there are multiple theories and I don't claim to believe any of them fully. I am not discrediting evolution either, but I have never seen any conclusive evidence. Its not the law of evolution.
Perhaps we say that one "theory" is better than another because you misunderstand scientific terminology. Scientists use the term "Theory" to describe evolution because it is a general way of understanding and explaining a varied set of phenomena over a vast period of time. This is as opposed to "laws," such as newton's laws, which describe very specific phenomena in very concrete terms.
The fact that scientists use the term "theory" to describe evolution does not, as you seem to believe, make it unproven. Evolution is something that has happened and is happening. That doesn't make God impossible. That doesn't even make intelligent design impossible. But neither God nor intelligent design are scientific concepts, and to compare them to evolution is a joke.
I take that back, apologies to the world's strongest kid.
Far scarier are the first row of shots in the gallery on his page.
I feel sorry for woman who cant lift 1kg.
i'm patiently awaiting the rolling pin and fabric softener attachments.
oh, and the GPS locator for whenever she tries to leave the kitchen.
What I'd like to know is... who would win in a fight, Little Superstar or Little Hercules?
in all seriousness, i'm going to have to chalk this up to cultural differences.
you see, in asia, women are more or less culturally expected to be dainty. (as opposed to america who can be as "big" and "beautiful" as they wanna be.) and in a continent where a typical woman is 5 ft tall, and 95 lbs, yes, the weight and size of a product can be a major selling point. particularly in a society where men do a majority of the computer-related stuff. it is not meant to be sexist. it's just a little taken out of literal context, and a lot out of cultural context.
Women are, on the whole, weaker than men.
Same with children.
When did the truth go out of vogue?
1kg is 1kg, and spread out flat, its nothing. Even for a kid.
@Reggie - isn't that the EXACT point they're trying to make?
Yes, but. It makes no sense to mention women alongside the EEEpcs weight, because most women cary bags around that weigh way over 1kg, they arent THAT weak.
"Nah, it just f***s with your muscles, tendons, and tissues... this kid's going to have issues when he gets older."
Uh no, that's a myth or old wives' tale, if you will. The fact is that kid will be far healthier and dramatically less injury-prone in adulthood. Rather than call him a freak we should applaud his self-discipline and hold him up as an example to the increasing numbers of morbidly obese teen (and pre-teen!) children of today. The future for them: diabetes, heart disease, and joint problems galore.
Dude....his farther forced him to get like that, I saw it on TV once
Yup, just swallowed some vomit...
or
"I just had breakfast twice"
Ha - yeh. I saw the same thing:

thats like saying that if i, a guy 19y/o, were to carry this with me, i would be on par with women and children. WOW i feel overjoyed to be called an 11 year old!
Wow, talk about a stretch.
