OLPC unveils first prototype of XO 2.0
Just when it looked like OLPC was finally getting at least one foot firmly grounded in reality with the upcoming Windows XP version of its low-priced XO, Nick Neg takes things back into the stratosphere with the unveiling of the XO 2.0. Due in 2010, the new laptop will employ dual sunlight-readable touchscreen displays in a smaller, folding e-book form factor. Sure, it looks totally amazing, but we'll believe it when we see it. As if that weren't ambitious enough, Nick calls a $20 pricepoint per display not out of the question, thanks to the ubiquity of LCD screens for DVD players, with a final laptop price of $75. Sure Nick, but 2010? Let's work on getting the XO down to $100 first, shall we? Oh, and speaking of the XO, the Give 1 Get 1 program will be started back up in August or September of this year. There's just never a dull moment with these folks.

COOL!!!!!!
GRoar1 ,
maybe you should have been paying attention in your high school history class. then you might know what 3rd world countries are. God the ignorance on this board is staggering.
::Drools::
I work at an inner city school in Chicago, and if this would come with WiFi, Blue Tooth, and Windows XP, it would be perfect for us. My students need to be able to have internet connectivity at home and we need to have it cheaply. Or, they'll never be able to compete.
GRoar1, if you're serious: The 1st World are the developed countries of North America, Western Europe and Australia. These countries have high GDPs and advanced economies according to the International Monetary Fund. The 2nd World was the Soviet Union and other Communist regimes, but the USSR went kaput and the 2nd World countries joined either the 1st or the 3rd Worlds. The 3rd World as you can no doubt guess are Africa and much of South America and South Asia. They're predominantly agrarian and frequently lack political stability. Nowadays the 1st World, 3rd World terminology is falling out of favor and people are instead using the terms Developed and Developing in order to make everyone feel better about themselves. Plus economists have come to the conclusion that it isn't quite so black and white as the old terms would have you believe. So now you know.
They're doing to the XO what Apple did to the iBook.
If it's going to be $100, a lot is going to have to happen in 2 years.
Why are you so dubious?
Its a ds-lite with both screens made bigger and both made touch-screen.
Screens are getting cheaper so that part is true
CPUs are getting cheaper and smaller so that part is true
Memory is getting cheaper and smaller so that part is true
What's not to like?
What's not feasible?
The only dodgy thing is 2010, is there any reason it can't come out next year?
Personally, I admire Negroponte's intention's, but, alongside education, I think we, as humans, should share the basic necessities of human survival. That includes: nutritious food, clean water and proper shelter. We should at least meet these necessities first, if not simultaneously, with the "Get one, Give one" project.
Being a person coming from a severely under-developed country (Bangladesh), in which the people suffer greatly from mercury-poisoned underground water pumps, among other things, I just think that our priorities, in the western society, is skewed with regards to how we should help these extremely under-privileged people.
With that said, I do appreciate and applaud Negroponte and anyone else who sees that sharing with the lesser-fortunate is something that is more than necessary in our progressively-greedy world and I also applaud to those kids who benefited from this program.
So let the OLPC run on BOTH XP and Linux, OK? Users choice. Is this not possible? And what have all of the critics and 'Monday morning quarterbacks' contributed to the enrichment of those less fortunate than themselves. Too much bitching and not enough pitching from what I'm hearing. You got a better idea - then put up or shut up. "Talk is cheap. It's deeds what counts."
nick neg is a pompous ass.
