WiMAX Nokia N810 hits the FCC, gets stripped
The FCC apparently figured we've seen as many external photos of the Nokia N810 WiMAX Edition as we needed, because when Espoo's latest tablet came in for testing, Uncle Sam did us all favor and stripped it down to the chassis. Nothing too thrilling inside, obviously -- oooh, the PCB is blue! -- but if you're ready and waiting with your $455 in hand, maybe this'll be enough to tide you over until these shipping in July or so. Check the gallery for the rest of the pics.

I love the N810 (hardware wise, not for the use of Maemo with it's weak developer community and dearth of decent apps). However, for the life of me, I don't get the rationale for introducing a WiMax version. WiMax has made little to no inroads in most markets, and other than Sprint and partners, is unlikely to see any large scale roll out in the US.
Personally, I'd have preferred to see one of the following:
1) An N810, sold unlocked from Nokia stores, with 1700, 1900 and 2100 HSDPA
2) A drastically improved OS2008 with more useful native apps (home screen more customizable, weather, google maps, etc) or an Android version
3) A quick follow-on on with an N830 that is more slender, runs S-60 Touch and an improved camera and D-Pad

Meh. What it needs is a camera that can take pictures of things other than your left shoulder, and either an SD slot or a regular mini SD port so that you can easily load stuff onto it from other computers. Also, the thumbboard is worse than useless - the flat keys are slower and more difficult to type on than the onscreen keyboard. They either need to ditch it entirely and make the thing smaller (the n800 doesn't have it but is much bigger), or have raised buttons.

After deciding on waiting for the Wimax version, then purchasing the nokia 810 version..I'm excited to see this.

So now that wimax is going to be a reality in Baltimore, DC, and Chicago over 2008 ( http://www.engadget.com/2008/06/18/sprint-turning-on-wimax-in-baltimore-in-september-chicago-and-d/ ), this might be something to consider getting now. I wish it had phone capability too. My secondary cell is a Sprint Mogul and I mainly keep it for my data needs, barely using the phone. I would love to replace it out with something like this instead.
