Canonical CEO says Ubuntu Netbook Remix build coming in June
You never really know what all will emerge from a simple interview, and thanks to a recent sit-down with Canonical chief executive Mark Shuttleworth, we now know that a build of Ubuntu tailored for ultraportables (or subnotes, as it were) is just around the bend. According to Mr. Shuttleworth, the aforesaid software will be announced "in the first week of June," and it'll be called the Netbook Remix. He also noted that the outfit is currently "working with Intel, which produces chips custom-made for this sector." Sadly, it seems we'll have to wait a week or so before finding out more, but those interested in reading the interview in full can certainly give the read link a visit.[Image courtesy of TurboGadgets, thanks KC Kim]

what I have really have been looking forward to buying is a lightweight laptop that runs Ubuntu but without the added hassles (such as suspend/hibernate not working - something essential if you are a student). This seems perfect.

I agree. The Ubuntu guys simply "get it".

I have a T60p running Ubuntu 8.04. Everything works out of the box except for the 56k modem.
Lenovo offers Suse Linux on some some of the T61 models.

Same here. Only I am having an issue with my mouse pointer being all messed up. Monitor switching works again (thanks X11 guys) which is the only thing that wouldn't work in 7.10.

Will this also work on bigger notebooks and desktops? Like it will take less resources, be more slim?
Hellios @ May 25th 2008 3:30PM
You mean like.. Kubuntu, Xubuntu and Fluxbuntu?
Xboxman @ May 25th 2008 11:04PM
If you want a less resource eating version of Ubuntu i suggest Xubuntu (what im running on my second computer). Its the same thing as ubuntu with most/all the bells and whistles but it runs a different desktop environment. (Windows desktop environment is the Explorer.exe).
If u want to find out more google ubuntu vs xubuntu or gnome (desktop for ubuntu) vs XFCE (xubuntu)

This is awesome. I am hoping to get an MSI Wind and this will be the perfect thing for it. It's gonna be great.
Adam @ May 25th 2008 6:25PM
What's a "Canonical" CEO?
Brady @ May 25th 2008 7:02PM
Canonical is the company that funds Ubuntu.

If only they could get Ubuntu running well on a *normal* laptop! I'm writing this in Ubuntu 8.04 on a Toshiba Tecra M4, while my hard drive load cycle count steadily increases, my battery life is 1/3 what it is under Windows Vista, my tablet stylus doesn't work, and my built-in accelerometers aren't being used to protect my hdd in case I bump or drop my computer.
Ihar `Philips` Filipau @ May 26th 2008 4:37PM
Did you tried that?

I would love to install Ubuntu on my Asus Eee PC, but the hassle of tweaking just puts me off. I would welcome a proper officially endorsed version that ensures the wifi, screen, sound, webcam all work properly during installation.
