Centrino 2 delayed, AMD Puma licks chops
We were all excited to see Intel's Montevina-based Centrino 2 next month, but it looks like that was never meant to be. Citing problems with the chip's integrated graphics and issues with 802.11n certification, Intel has pushed its launch to July 14, with the complete line hitting streets in the first week of August. Says AMD, "Hi. We're AMD. We have a little chip called Puma, it has no integrated graphic issues, and it'll be available in June. How YOU doin'?"

oh noo... puma should slash the price to compete now ;)
"AMD expects Puma to take a large bite of the laptop chipset market"
"Analysts remain sceptic about AMD's marketing; believe it lacks teeth"
And so it goes on....
You don't realize how correct you are about price dropping... AMD's Puma can't compare to Core 2 Duos (which is what the Centrino 2 is based upon) so who cares about AMD's offerings unless it was substantially cheaper.
Funny... sad for Intel
First off... you're a first-class moron!
Two... you're fucking disgusting!
Yeah, sorry someone posted it as a bulletin on myspace and I had to share the atrocity with someone because it was too much to bare alone.
This is a warning...DO NOT CLICK THAT LINK. Of course you're gonna click it because I flat out told you not to do something, human nature is what it is.
Hi AMD,
Never heard of you or Puma.
Put me on your "Do Not Call" list
Thanks
Wait, before you hang up, can you tell me how many cores will actually work in it when it ships?
kthnxbye
I'll be much happier when/if AMD actually ships in June. Their track record has been less than stellar. I am rooting for them, though.
care to provide some detais on Puma? Is it really a competitor, or just released before? AMD havnt been all too great since core2duo.
But remember we are AMD so it will still be shit!
This may actually be great for consumers. if Puma is a success, then Intel will be forced to offer a better price-performance ratio when it introduces Montevina, in order to compete. We may avoid the incredibly high introductory prices for this tech altogether.
Well, probably not, but hey, competition is always good for the consumer.
Well probably have to wait and see how this goes. If AMD's puma can take a slice out of Intel there should be a price drop in mobile processors... and with that money AMD can expand their range. They've been quiet these days. I can still remember a few years ago they started selling a lotta x64 chips, while Intel was still on 32 bit.
I wonder if current demand for the Atom range of CPUs is so large (and prices so firm for now) that Intel's wise to ramp up the Atom line and make a load of money NOW. Then they can bring the Centrino 2 online. Makes a lot of commercial sense.
"how YOU doing". Hey NORBIT was good for something.
Then Intel proves that with Core2 architechture it has double the performance of Puma's K8 based Turions. Intel says... How YOU Doin!
AMD, please for the love of god you've got a golden opportunity here.
DON'T SCREW IT UP!!
I love you, don't let me down again
Jeez, get a room.
Whats wrong with intels 802.11n chips? I have a intel 802.11n card in my laptop and it does full 270 on the 5ghz band and 130 on the 2.4ghz band. It does everything i have expected of 802.11n .
Also isnt centrino just a whole bunch of intel stuff combined? Who cares if centrino 2 doesnt come out as long as people still can get intel cpus with good wireless i don't think they have a problem anyway.
So, grab Puma now, or wait a couple of weeks for Intel's superior offering.
Tough call.
Does this mean a delay for the much anticipated Latitude E-Series of Dell laptops?
All these processor code names and marketing rebrands make my head hurt. AMD and Intel are just as bad with their "Sabre Tooth Tigers" and "Montevinas" as ATI and Nvidia are with their HDX9850.53s and 8800GTXSRV/2s.
I have a question, do you think, when these chips come out, that lenovo will release them with the t61?
so excited. puma ll be great. if u want just render wait for centrino2 and if u want to do the rest buy puma. the advantage of puma is in gpu.
Wait, by "complete line" coming in August, does Intel also mean the SFF (small form factor) processors like the SU9300 and SU9400?
@ Ninjakamster (XBL: RNK2K) I miss you PS3! : (
wtf with name
anywho- AMD shud just shut their trap and let Intel dominate IBM, centrino 2 or not
Turion to VIA, Sempron to Power PC, they all give the same utterly horrible outcome compared to anything that Intel puts out
Hell, the Celeron or Atom could outpace any of those processors above, so just think at how much Centrino 2 will own anything AMD puts out
Yeah. AMD, IBM, VIA and all the other competitors should just fucking die so Intel can charge us $1000 for their lowest end processor because it's their processors 'fastest on the market' where in fact it's THEIR MARKET.
And BTW, Nvidia's also coming up with their own CPUs.
I don't have anything against Intel (my laptop has a Pentium M, two of the laptops in our house have Core 2 Duos, we have a Core 2 Quad desktop. My own desktop uses an Athlon X2 though) but I'd like to see people give their competitors some respect.
lol, im doin' fine, how YOU doin?
