Sony's Howard Stringer to show off new OLED TVs at D
The D conference is in full swing, and the next heavy hitter on deck is Sony CEO Howard Stringer, who's rumored to have a new Sony OLED display for Unkie Walt to play with. We're assuming it'll be a little bit bigger than the XEL-1, but Silicon Alley Insider says it'll come in at just .3mm thick, which is only slightly beefier than a playing card. We're guessing it'll be more like the XEL-1's 3mm, but we'll see what Howie has in store for us -- we wouldn't be opposed to hearing some more about those "slim PS3" rumors, ourselves.

.3mm?!? sounds like it would break upon contact... there's thin and there's invisible. 3mm sounds about right, and even that's pushing it.
3mm? Is that show. But the question is how big will the base be, 3 inches thick??
Doesn't that base and stand really negate the whole "Thin" thing?
I mean, unless you're looking at it from the side, you can't see how thin it is. While you're looking at the picture (Which I do understand is a higher quality), who cares?
Who cares how thin the display is when you still have that HUGE BASE!!! Yet another hyped Sony product.
wall mount...
Is the XEL-1 even wall-mountable? I can't wait 'till we are hanging OLEDs in the middle of the room from the ceiling.
... I really hope we get some PS3 slim news
I agree with Mystic on the thin display thing being overrated if its going to have such a big brick of a base attached to it. But these OLED TVs do deserve their hype( even if the thin display isn't worth it), its the high quality of screen everyone is excited about. Now if Sony would just remove the unnecessary thin display and make the OLED TV cheaper, then they'll get my money.
make an industry-standard (or Sony-standard) attachment and allow the revised ps3 and other displays hook onto (using it as the base)
I saw one of these at a Sony store. It is ridiculously thin in person. They had a Blu-Ray movie playing and it was gorgeous, but 1080p on a screen that small seemed a little moot. It feels solid, but looks like you could snap it with one hand like a pencil.
Does anyone else think "D" is the most fucking stupid name for a conference they've ever heard? It's ridiculously ambiguous and makes searching a pain. I realize it's short for All Things Digital or something, but why not just call it ATD?
is it 3 mm or 0.3 mm?
"Experts predict that such technology will be found in the MacBook Molecule and the Lenovo X.300mm by 2010.
..."
They should hold like 4 sharpie's next to the base. Or maybe 2 tampons stacked on eachother!
Frankly, nobody gives a shit if it's 3mm. I'll take an OLED display even if it's 100 times that.
you sir, are in the minority
zunq: if you're happy with 30cm deep displays, just stick with flatscreen CRTS.. they're immensely cheaper. :)
My point is, I don't care how thin it is, just give me a decent sized OLED that I can afford but don't go crazy about making it thin just add to the cost.
After all it is the image quality that intrigues me most about OLED, the infinite contrast ratio, the colors and what not.
CRTs aren't 30cm last I've seen one, they are beyond 60cm, and OLED's will be immensely lighter no matter the size.
I find it so funny that all of these posts keep hyping the thin screen but fail to acknowledge that brick of a base. You know what's thinner and better... my laptop. And it's portable.
Ridiculous.
I don't get what all the freaking hype is about the Sony OLED TV. I understand that new tech deserves to be showcased but who cares that the screen is 3mm thick when the base is thicker than a regular LCD and it loses half it's brightness over 5 years. and 11 inches? C'mon who's going to watch television on an 11inch screen? I'm waiting for a 2nd generation version of this tech to get excited. Am I the only person who feels that way?
Am I the only one amazed by the fact that pencil is actually standing on its sharp pointy side.. Damn, thats like almost more intresting than how cool that display is if you ask me =O
