ASUS positively, definitely launching 10-inch Eee PC 1000 at Computex
There hasn't exactly been much mystery surrounding this one, but Crave's UK arm has now gotten word straight from ASUS that the company will indeed be launching its new Eee PC 1000 series laptop at Computex in Taiwan next Tuesday and that, yes, it will a 10-inch model. This one won't actually be available for sale until November, however, at least in the UK. Unfortunately, ASUS apparently isn't quite ready to confirm if the laptop will be Atom-based or not, but everything certainly seems to be pointing in that direction.

Asus, you're ruining a good thing. Keep your prices low. Stop flooding the marketing with confusing models. Simplify your offerings. And for *'s sake, make black available on launch days.
James @ May 29th 2008 6:16PM
This EEE should have been the first one, and it should have been (and should be) $450
Blaine Oliver @ May 29th 2008 4:20PM
This is just plain ridiculous, where is the cheap laptop we were promised with great battery? Seriously i would've bought an EEE 900 if they hadn't shafted us Brits. Im waiting for the wind and am hoping for a reasonable price, if i get 4 hours which is top whack of what they promised, i will be happy.
Ian @ May 29th 2008 4:34PM
One has to take a step back and look at what Asus appear to be doing with their eeepc brand line.
They will soon have a 7 inch sub range, a 9 inch sub range and a 10 inch subrange.
The 7 inchars will become the low priced value leaders and the others will fill in all the way up towards Asus's other fuller sized laptops. Thus don't look at the 9/10 inch models as low priced units. That's not the intention. That role will ONLY be filled by the smaller screen line.
sinai @ May 29th 2008 5:16PM
^ which is complete lunacy. newer revisions of hardware is supposed to make it cheaper, faster and more innovative - not more expensive, slower (atom - what a disappointment) and stagnant in terms of technology.
the price jumped two-fold and all it did was add a bigger screen and a _cheaper_ CPU. any fool can see that. also note that MSI can do what the $800 EEEPC can do at a lower cost. it's sheer arrogance.
The Joker @ May 29th 2008 9:20PM
Agreed, ASUS keeps outspec'ing instead of delivering on their original promise.
Fusion @ May 29th 2008 4:21PM
UGLY, the previous one eeepc 900 looked better
Nate @ May 29th 2008 5:14PM
I don't think that this picture is even an Eee Pc.
Kaiser-Machead @ May 29th 2008 4:22PM
I gotta say...I'm really hating the indicator lights being right on the display bezel. What's so wrong with having it on the lip of the bottom case, where it should be?
Also, it seems that Asus is starting to get a bit big-headed on themselves about this whole Eee thing. They're approaching standard laptop sizes and prices, whereas the first Eee was a tiny king in its arena.
AJ in the East Bay @ May 29th 2008 6:47PM
You make a good point about the indicator lights on the bezel. That can get very distracting and right now I'll let this one pass.
oddworld7 @ May 29th 2008 4:27PM
all i care about is price drop for the 900
Justin @ May 29th 2008 4:30PM
September?
This is over-priced nonsense. I'll take the first 9-10" laptop with an Atom processor running XP under $400, please.

it's like a hybrid hummer!
feffrey @ May 29th 2008 4:35PM

This December get ready for the 15in EEE PC!!!!
With adual atom cpu, uber bright white color, and with a battery that only lasts 10 min all for a low, low, low, price of $1000!!!!
Andrew @ May 29th 2008 4:40PM
Anyone else think it looks hideous?

phanbouy @ May 29th 2008 8:40PM
your website? yeah.
Cagrino @ May 29th 2008 4:41PM
Can't say this makes me excited.
Bought the Eee 8G and just about the only thing that will make me upgrade is a tablet edition with at least a 1024x600 resolution.
marcin @ May 29th 2008 4:43PM
yeh i agree with justin. i want something with atom, a 8.9 or 10 inch screen, about 4 hours of battery life, and i want it at a price below 500 dollars.
whichever company releases a product with the specs i stated will get my money. dell, hp, acer, asus, msi, whatever...
Matt @ May 29th 2008 5:33PM
MSI Wind is set to fill that, except for the battery part. I'm hoping they offer a six-cell battery for a bit extra on the $400 Linux model, but I'm somehow doubting it. Too bad, looked good otherwise. Lets hope another company can do it.
giantenemycrab @ May 29th 2008 4:47PM
No thanks. Asus blew it. The Eee is too expensive now. I'll wait for the Dell mini-Inspiron.
freakmarket @ May 29th 2008 4:54PM
Going Dell ... there isn't even a debate ... Dell looks better ... will run better
Vidit Bhargava @ May 29th 2008 5:09PM
"definitely launching"...that stands out on engadget
sinai @ May 29th 2008 5:17PM
the "1000" is not a model number. it's the cost of the model in USD.
Vcize @ May 29th 2008 5:18PM
For those commenting on the styling, I don't believe that picture is actually an EEE 1000. Someone commented in one of the other posts where that picture was used that there is another picture that is zoomed out a bit and you can see the pictured laptop sitting next to a 15in laptop and it is clearly much larger than 10 inches.
It was seem that is a laptop from ASUS's line of regular laptops, not an EEE.
naz @ May 29th 2008 5:43PM
personally i think it looks good

Its called lense flare
con @ May 29th 2008 6:27PM
Hint to ASUS: KISS (Keep it Simple Stupid).
fourthletter @ May 29th 2008 6:34PM
Isn't that one of ASUS 12" laptops (with the orange trim) with a 10" screen rather badly stuck in it (back to the ugly bezel hell of the 700)
I think all the moaners are missing the point ASUS are obviously trying to exploit the EEE brand, its popular so they are rolling out EEE as the brand name for all their sub - small notebooks regardless of price.
Remember the quote from the CEO saying they might even spin EEE off into a seperate company ?
I'm looking forward to a cheap EBOX alot more than all these laptops.
sinai @ May 29th 2008 6:38PM
and remember when motorola thought the RAZR was the best phone ever made and made no attempt at furthering their brand?
moaners? no.
smart consumers? yes.
Hoos @ May 29th 2008 7:21PM
All I really care about is a slightly larger keyboard. Better battery life would be nice. But, honestly, the screen on the original is big enough for what I use it for. They keyboard is sucktastic, though.
Yeah, I could haul around a Logitech USB keyboard (they do work), but that kind of defeats the whole portability thing.
I'm not sure that ASUS has quite jumped the shark. But they're close to jumping the guppy.
Valgas @ May 29th 2008 8:10PM
Asus is making me WANT Dell's mini inspirion to steal all of the praise and sales from them. Damn Asus with all of their price tomfoolery and hardware cajones... :| ? Dell's Mini Inspirion looks much sweeter than this ting mon.
vdogg89 @ May 29th 2008 8:29PM
after all this time, the 7" eee looks better and better
jon @ May 29th 2008 10:48PM
I just don't see the point of this computer.. by the time you get in this price point, you can get a decent 14" HP that will outperform and be less outdated (technology wise) in a few years.
TIMMAH! @ May 30th 2008 2:57AM
I guess when they release the '1200' we'll finally be in real laptop-land...
