WiMax Eee PC 901 specs, older Eee PC price cuts
As you know, Asus will be announcing its Atom-based 8.9-inch Eee PC 901 and 10-inch 1001 tomorrow at Computex. However, the more obscure WiMax Expo show has already kicked off featuring a WiMax-enabled Eee PC 901. While the WiMax version won't ship until later (for obvious reasons), the 901 models at the show are being displayed in both black and white models based on a 1.6GHz Atom processor with 1GB of memory, Bluetooth, WiFi, memory card slot, and a 20GB SSD for Linux builds or 12GB SSD for Windows. Oh, and the 1.14-kg laptop features a 4- or 6-hour battery life depending upon battery selected. As to the older Eee PCs, ASUS' CEO said they'll be cutting prices on those which makes the Celeron M 701 and 900 models all the more attractive.Read -- Eee PC 901

I wonder what the actual price cut is. i think i am still going for the MSI Wind though..
DarkLight @ Jun 2nd 2008 3:10AM
+1.... I'd only get back to ASUS if that price cut ends up at $200 (the original target)... But I doubt so

OMG, EEE 10001!?!?!?
Bobs @ Jun 2nd 2008 2:45AM
NINE THOUSAND!!!!!!!!!!!
zomg0t @ Jun 2nd 2008 2:46AM
zomg0t! Asus has lost focus on the point of the EEE: it's meant to be a cheap sub-notebook, not an expensive laptop with a 100" screen!

SPARTA!!!

I almost ordered a eee 900 yesterday. I still might but I really want the wind. I just hope it becomes available the 3rd and not just officially dated. I want one as a second computer cuz my wife is always fighting me for our current laptop. So I figure I can use this to sit in front of the tv and surf. Plus it'd be nice to have a lappy that doesnt weigh 15 pounds.

Price cuts? So maybe we will finally get to the promised $200 price point now.
Adam Hoang @ Jun 2nd 2008 2:34AM
I hope there are price cuts all around, the low cost subnote's, what's the term Engadget decided upon?
Anyhow, MSI Wind or ECS G10IL or HP Mini-Note or the yet-to-be-named Dell SubNote, cage match anyone?
wilcoholic @ Jun 2nd 2008 2:57AM
I'll stick with sony vaio's for now and in the future. The sony vaio tz is just the best portable laptop on the market. And the cheapest configuration is only a few $100 more expensive then these subnotebooks going for around $600. Comes with tons more features and performance though.
Reader @ Jun 2nd 2008 3:08AM
Say what? Sony's site puts it at $1,700...
http://www.sonystyle.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/CategoryDisplay?catalogId=10551&storeId=10151&langId=-1&categoryId=8198552921644507782&parentCategoryId=16154
Comparing it to the MSI wind, it's not worth quadruple(!) the price for a dual core CPU, 1 inch bigger screen, 512mb more RAM, and mobile broadband. The only thing I'd even want really from the Vaio is the RAM, which is cheap. The processor is nice, but not really necessary since you can't play any games with an onboard video card. Not sure what you mean, I wouldn't ever consider that computer.
wilcoholic @ Jun 2nd 2008 3:21AM
Sometimes Sony offers a $200 cashback offer on some of these models. If you then look at your cheapest store you can get an old sony vaio TZ model for as low as $1000. Now in my opinion thats definately worth the money.
The processor is just for overal performance to keep things running nice and smooth. Not just for games. If you go by that argument then Macbooks would be completely useless.

I definitely see your point, but it's worth mentioning that for the few hundred dollars savings you could, well, procure another Eee PC. It's not to say that purchasing two for the hell of it would be rational, but it does highlight a significant point in terms of what Asus and other manufacturers are trying to achieve.

I, for one, am damn tired of hearing about the Eee PC! OMG!
CosterMonger @ Jun 2nd 2008 10:18AM
@wilcoholic, do you mean the ancient 10" model? :)
the TZ is sweet but expensive, perfect for on the road sales types.
but for starters the TZ actually has a DVDRW drive which is not on any of the sub $1000 tiny compact small cheap laptops/notebooks?
wilcoholic @ Jun 2nd 2008 11:46AM
No, I really mean the TZ. In my opinion the best ultraportable on the market. Even better then the Lenovo x300.
I'd just check Sony's website for any special offers. Especially this time of the year. I bought a sony vaio TZ a few weeks ago because Sony was offering a cashback for my particular model. I bought it at the cheapest store I could find, registered it and got my refund.
These sub-subnotebooks were good when they were still $199 as promised or even $299. But nowadays most of them are reaching the $1000 mark. Might as well go for a vaio if you get the chance in my opinion.
BMErdin @ Jun 2nd 2008 10:34AM
I'm gonna have to compared to price-dropped Eee against the MSI Wind. Which won't be easy, given the obvious differences in them.
BMErdin @ Jun 2nd 2008 10:34AM
Wow. Me no type good today.
Tben @ Jun 2nd 2008 2:36PM
I prefer HSDPA to WiMAX....
