AMD jumps into the netbook game, challenges opponents to a duel
Clearly not content with letting Intel, VIA, and now NVIDIA own the market on the architectures of miniature, budget laptops, grumpy underdog AMD showed off what look to be some reference designs that would sit nicely next to the Eees of the world. At Computex 2008, the company unveiled two models: a white, 8.9-inch Linux laptop with 1GB of RAM, an AMD CPU, the ATI RS690 chipset, and an almost MacBook-like black XP-based model with a 7-inch 1280 x 600 display (that's some pixel density!), a 60GB or 80GB hard drive, and 1GB of RAM.
Update: We've got some video of the black model, apparently a touchscreen device, in action after the break.

i dont think 400 is realistic. dont think this will be less than 800.
According to :http://translate.google.com/translate?u=http%3A//aving.net/kr/news/default.asp%3Fmode%3Dread%26c_num%3D88223%26C_Code%3D02%26SP_Num%3D175&hl=en&langpair=auto|en&tbb=1&ie=utf-8 It will be 300k won to 400k wan which is $300 to $400 according to google.
Well, note to ASUS, MSI and others... you can make a good looking subnotebook and still make it affordable (HP got the good looking part right, not the price)... reading the specs and looking at the pictures I'm digging this, change the pointing device to a trackpoint type device and I'll be over it.
I fail to see how you could actually USE this device. The text on Windows XP looked so small in that picture that you'd practically have to this thing up to your face to use it. Am I missing something or are these generally useless???
yeah you are missing glasses dude...
It's like you earned a star and then uppercutted.
Mabook?? Looks like a VAIO TZ to me.
If they added in a thinner bezel and IBM-style nub for the mouse, it would be a lot more attractive.
i don't understand where all this FUD is coming from.
AMD processors in most cases _EXCEED_ their intel counterparts dollar-for-dollar. and don't forget that these things will include ATi graphics and will likely to cost less than anything with an intel chip in it.
in other words, you have what people have been clamoring for in these netbooks.
except maybe battery life.
PS. Intel Atom processors blow! haven't you seen the early numbers?
they blow compared to what ??
just what are you going to use them for ?
do they blow compared to the processors in the '69 Orbital Landing Module ? or compared to a Phenom X4 ?
or compared to a VIA C7 Chipset ?
In what way do they blow ?
Transfer of information... you to us. please. pretty please.
Is there a ISO for this on their site yet?
oh sorry, I thought I was replying to the Ubuntu Netbook remix thread :S
But still, that in the pic is a serious contendor, needs to be put up for sale ASAP. AMD could finally find an arena where it's lower-power, lower-performance processors are worth something
If they add a trackpad and a 10inch screen to this I'll fork over my $500
Best keyboard i've seen so far.
by far the sexiest micro-portable I've seen out of all of the contenders.....
I dont like how everything is compared to what is most popular.
When its a small notebook, the EEEs mentioned, when its a phone then the iPhone etc. its annoying.
That's because these companies have original products that everyone copied off.
@ FRZ
I definately agree, as of course Apple invented the cell phone, everyone knows that....
*mumbles under breath: fuckin' retards these days.....
by the way I'd like to throw that term in the hat as a possible catch all phrase...MPC or Micro Portable Computer...makes sense and gives some practical idea of the size and performance.....I can see people calling these MPC's just cause it's catchy
The device is quite interesting. It seems to site between the umpc and the netbooks (i'm gonna use this term even if i don't necessarily agree with it).
The trackpad, I don't know about it, but it's probably serviceable. And look what it does to the size of thing? This thing is gonna be SMALL and portable.
I like the cam position, that's a nice way to shave a lil off the bezel.
The keyboard looks great. I didn't like the dodgy right shift location. It's too bad that the arrows get scrunched, but I use right shift way more than the arrows.
For those complaining that the higher resolution will make things tiny, you can always increase the font and icon sizes.
i like it , i like a lot , i wish the trackpoint was on the right side of the keyboard and if it was a swivel screen .. but that would be too awesome.
I wouldn't say micro. Mini is more like it. UPMCs and MIDs are more in the micro category since they will be smaller and practically do the same things as these mini notebooks.
OK, but exactly what AMD CPU is powering these Netbooks? I don't think it's Turion64.
This looks to be a better design IMO than most of the Intel netbooks out there, please have an option for Intel in this as well!
On an AMD product? Not too likely!
That is the most cramped keyboard I have ever seen.
looks to me like a turion64 processor right? aren't those kinda power hungry compared to say the atom or the VIAs, i know the power will be much nicer but I think i'd rather have the battery life. They have power stepping though right?
If this is made by Raon as I suspect (see earlier comment) they have some nice Lion-Polymer battery tech that they use on their Everun product. 50-60wh battery would fit across the base if the CPU was cool enough. Plus, the PS button cuts the clock. On the Everun it cuts it by 50% and saves significant battery power.
As someone said earlier, WTF is the CPU/GPU combo on this. Geode NX is too old. Sempron Mobile too hot.
Chippy.
Competition is awesome!
AMD seems to be losing on the desktop front for now, but if they can competitively counter the Atom's market, throw in some of their ATI magic into an all-in-one chip to get those graphics going, and find some manufacturers, we can get some really nice netbook/subnote/ULMNOPC's this fall! :D
Sorry, its already a fail, just by looking at that keyboard. Non-square keys at the top? Arrow keys not arranged in the proper position?
My old Palm Pilot keyboard is more usable than that thing's keyboard. Just because something is small and cheap doesn't mean it's not junk.
IDK I THINK CAPS IS BIG ENOUGH
they haven't told us much about the CPU, you'd think that would be the first thing amd would want to talk about
can I get a RS780M instead of the RS690M
ugly hinge on the 7", make hinge pretty: netbook will be pretty
Is this being released in Korea first? (the keyboard has korean on it.)
1280x600 in 7"!?!?!
my eyes, the goggles do nothing!
An AMD cpu? No shit? What was suposed to go in there before? Egad! As long as it is not that pile of junk Geode.
i like-a the nipples
Dear Engadget, please please please create a new blog/site/whatever just for these UMPC devices so I no longer have to see them on the main site. Thanks!
See, I want a thin and light PC that has a 720p display and can handle 720p video. Doesn't need a blu-ray drive, I'd rather rip the video to H264. And it needs powerful headphone jacks (enough to power two sets of headphones).
It also needs to survive a flight from Newark, NJ to Los Angeles, CA that doesn't have power ports (F-ing airlines, for the price of flying they should at least include f-ing power!) So its a 6 hour flight which normally doesn't run 6 hours. It usually runs 5hrs and 30 minutes with 30 minutes on either end that your not allowed to use electronics. So, I need 4.5 hours of battery life.
my AMD turion laptop is burning through my lap right now.... i am afraid of what these will do.
it also has HORRIBLE power management.
oh ffs, another one? this is getting stupid.
Why did you say it was a touchscreen device?
It has a little mouse control on the bottom (as seen in the video).
Also, the video shows no touchscreen use.
Just wondering where you got the idea it was a touchscreen from?
Take a closer look at the video.
It's curious how everyone (AMD, NVidia) claim to be better than Intel and have the hardware to prove it, but still don't hold Intel's share in the market.
Obviously marketing is a huge factor....
In a perfect world, the best hardware would be the most one distributed.
portable computers are getting more affordable.
where's that SONY exec who said "race to the bottom", is that guy fired yet?
