GeCube's 10.2-inch netbook gets stuck with VIA C7 processor
Talk about being behind the eight ball. With the Eee PC 901 and 1000 getting official, not to mention the onslaught of potent competitors, GeCube's 10.2-inch alternative isn't likely to steal much of the spotlight in Taipei. Nevertheless, the seemingly unnamed machine is ready to fight the losing battle with a 1.6GHz VIA C7-D processor, 512MB of DDR2 RAM (with an additional slot open), 1,024 x 600 resolution panel, 80GB SATA hard drive, stereo speakers, Ethernet, WiFi and three USB 2.0 jacks. Reportedly, the unit will come loaded with gOS (but it will support Windows XP if that's more your style), and while no price is mentioned, we'd suggest keeping it remarkably low until a Nano / Atom shows up inside.

Anyone else notice that the base looks like a Sager laptop from about 1998?
Patriks7 @ Jun 3rd 2008 4:14PM
wow the Lenovo x300 has some serious competition :o
Ninjakamster (PS360 FTW!) @ Jun 3rd 2008 4:19PM
Unremarkable, will be eaten alive by the other big competitors. Too bad.

If it costs $300 it will succeed

Aww ... how cute, another mini computer.
Is it just me or does Engadget only care about useless mini laptops anymore?
Think I might kill my RSS feed until this craziness is over.
Superevil @ Jun 3rd 2008 5:28PM
I'll take the constant mini lap coverage over the constant Apple fellating anyday.
Technex @ Jun 3rd 2008 5:57PM
Just about to say the same thing. National laptop week or something?

Dear Engadget, please please please create a new blog/site/whatever just for these UMPC devices so I no longer have to see them on the main site. Thanks!
sandman74 @ Jun 3rd 2008 5:26PM
No way.... !
these devices are redefining the product cycle of out of date... with new models released even before the old ones have hit the market.
any day now... the Hurricane (wind's big brother) with a 2.0Ghz Atom-E chip.. due in the fall. The eee 1002 will also use this chip... but for $200 more.
I really enjoy reading about them. Its what brought me to engadget as a new reader only a few weeks ago.
ronald.raygun @ Jun 3rd 2008 5:44PM
so you would rather not get any 'lil 'puter stories and have like no updates than updates with them in it? makes since, i know its hard to skip past headlines about these and all...

Bah who cares. Its a refreshing change to the metric shit ton of iShit and ishit rumors that has been bombarding the site since last year. OMG! the store is down! REPORT REPORT REPORT!!
Enjoy the nonApple Engadget while it lasts. Next week Engadget will be sucking at Apple's teet at WWDC so hard it will be bleeding.
PS- Again I don't so much have issues with relevant news. (New hardware announced. New functionality in a new software update, etc.) But when rumors are posted, store being down is posted, lines outside Apple store are posted. WTF? Is this Macrumors or Engadget. When did a line at the Apple store become a gadget? Again suck that Apple juice. Suck it HARD.

They're probably thinking the same way HP is...get the platform ready and on the market, so when the Nano processors actually become available, they can drop them into their existing line and immediately have something competitive. Unfortunately, the longer it takes VIA to get it together, the more they risk being left in the dust by Intel's marketing power.

Three USB ports? two more than a macbook air...
...if only it could cut delicious cake.
Technex @ Jun 3rd 2008 5:58PM
Delicious, moist cake.
Blaine Oliver @ Jun 3rd 2008 6:09PM
Delicious moist chocolate cake you mean :P

I see that it has the C7-D, which is the "desktop" version, rather than the C7-M "mobile" i.e. lower power version of the processor.
Jon Doe. @ Jun 4th 2008 1:50AM
1.6GHz VIA C7-D processor for the lose.
Not so much an epic fail but it definitely takes home the bronze in the category of FAIL.
