AMD launches Puma platform with Turion X2 Ultra CPUs -- garrowel
While you won't fine a "Puma" sticker anywhere at Computex, rest assured that AMD's latest laptop platform is now official. Instead you'll be looking for AMD Turion X2 Ultra Dual-Core processors, the 780 chipset, and ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3000-series graphics on the manufacturer's spec sheet. Come to think of it, a sticker on the 100 or so Puma laptops lined up from HP, Dell, Acer, Asus and others might be easier to spot when the new lappies hit the market as early as this week.[Via PCWorld]

Welcome back amd, I await your performance.
Mujeeb @ Jun 4th 2008 3:02AM
I'd just like to know how "garrowel" enhances the story. A little annoying if you ask me.

Lighten up. Its a Blog not CNN.

It seems to me that AMD is playing for the Apple nod in 2010 when Intel's contract runs out. OSX 10.7 Puma, anyone?
kccboy2004 @ Jun 4th 2008 7:07AM
Why would AMD wait for anything from a tiny player like Apple ?
Your remark seems to suggest that Apple counts for anything. Would it not make more sense for them to wait for a nod from HP and Dell ? Add it up, it makes no sense.
That is like saying that Goldfish only fuck in pond water. Or that Shell Oil's gasoline will only work in Alfa Romeo's.
WTF, really.
initialxy @ Jun 4th 2008 7:10AM
what? OSX 10.1 = Puma
Richard Pound @ Jun 4th 2008 3:07AM
AMD should just throw their tri-core(or quad) processors into laptops.
iofthestorm @ Jun 4th 2008 3:22AM
Hmm, I really wish they'd had an HP TX2000 series with Radeon 3000 series IGP a few weeks ago when I got one, but I guess it'll keep me more focused on school if I can't play games for shit on it. But seriously, this is a really good development because Radeon 3200 IGPs are pretty capable for IGPs, and I don't think there's really anything else that offers this much power in terms of laptop integrated graphics.

Is this thing better than the C2Ds from Intel yet? If not, it can sit in the pile with the rest of the AMD fail.
Oinquer @ Jun 4th 2008 11:07AM
...read history and then And only then flame....what you did is just noob
AMD been in front of intel as much as intel been in front of AMD.
I use AMD cause the extra performance i get from C2D wont pay the money i spend for it...
thought various times about going Intel...its just those prices that keep me in AMD...
loosely_coupled @ Jun 4th 2008 5:47AM
No, its not. It won't be nearly as fast as an equivalent Core 2 Duo, although they will come with MUCH BETTER INTEGRATED GRAPHICS, so some people without much processing requirements will probably like it.
And hopefully it is more power efficient than a Core 2.
chickenator @ Jun 4th 2008 4:43AM
fine, i won't "fine" a Puma sticker.
Kin @ Jun 4th 2008 5:25AM
Puma is a great idea. It is not faster than C2D but who needs that? To paraphrase an AMD exec, do you really need to open Excel faster? or would you rather have a decent graphics chip for video HD vids, like what Puma has now?
Pfanne @ Jun 4th 2008 6:00AM
i like the idea behind this solution...
they go with a build in gpu and a dedicated one in ONE notebook...
means you can have low power consumption for long session and a powerful gpu when you need one...
thats quite nice...
if they go for some nice linux drivers, i might buy an amd notebook
mattclarkie @ Jun 4th 2008 6:37AM
Let's punish those stickers with a gigantic 'fine'.
I hope AMD can pull this off, I am getting very tired of all the Intel Fanboys going on about the latest AMD offerings sucking compared the the Intels.
jonnyb1952 @ Jun 4th 2008 8:33AM
Ha.... I know that... but I don't see what all the Intel hub-bub is about.
I've used computers with Core 2 Duo's that didn't run near as fast as the Athlon 3800+ Single core I'm sitting in front of right now.
mxgoldman89 @ Jun 4th 2008 9:06AM
@johnnyb - Same here. My desktop's Athlon 64 3400+ runs faster than my university's core 2 duo's.

This could be worth cracking open my dv6000 and chucking my TL-56 out the window......hopefully it wouldn't burn my lap as much.
I Cook on My Notebook @ Jun 6th 2008 11:39AM
If i wont see a stick then how come i see that sticker right there?
jd242008 @ Jun 6th 2008 12:33PM
Does anyone know of a good arcticle or website that explains when computers use CPUs and when they use GPUs?
