ASUS 42-inch Eee TV spotted at Computex
As ASUS continues to rapidly dilute its Eee brand like it's going out of style, we still find the 42-inch Eee TV somewhat intriguing. It seems that the set was bolted up with a PlayStation 3 'round back, which was obviously used to pipe the Blu-ray version of Cars on-screen for onlookers to fawn over. Check out a few more snaps of the sides at Engadget Chinese.

It might be worth $200 extra dollar for this if it could also do some DVR stuff. If not I would rather just spend a bit more to make an old computer into a MythTV box.
OneLove @ Jun 5th 2008 4:36PM
is it $300?
Rick White @ Jun 5th 2008 2:35PM
Wonder if it comes with Atom...
Richard Lai @ Jun 5th 2008 3:17PM
You're obesessed with Atom, you know? Must you always mention it?
me @ Jun 5th 2008 3:44PM
if you love Atom so much why don't you marry it? HAW HAW HAW.....
NG @ Jun 5th 2008 3:53PM
Maybe thats the only chip he remember how to spell..lol
mmmbud @ Jun 6th 2008 10:41AM
Your own sentence is so flawed you don't deserve to sneer at other people for grammatical errors.
john @ Jun 5th 2008 2:36PM
And, how much is the EeeTV going to cost?
MeatPop @ Jun 5th 2008 2:43PM
ASUS will say sub-$1000, so probably near $3000
Usagimaru @ Jun 5th 2008 2:53PM
Well if you read the article about the all-in-one Eee monitor, which mentioned the Eee TV, you would know that it'll cost about $200 more than regular 42-inch LCD.
An LG 1080p 42-inc LCD on bestbuy.com is $1200, so the Eee TV should cost around $1400.
Daren @ Jun 5th 2008 3:12PM
Usagimaru:
ya missed the joke...
CosterMonger @ Jun 5th 2008 2:40PM
does it come with the PS3.
Justin @ Jun 5th 2008 2:40PM
God damn you, Asus. You had it all with the original EeePC concept, and you let it slip away.
Like sand through the hands..
ReggieXuk @ Jun 5th 2008 3:12PM
"YOU HAD IT ALL, AND YOU BLEW IT! YOU BLEW IT!"
sinjinn @ Jun 5th 2008 4:58PM
you coulda been somebody! , you coulda been a contender !
David @ Jun 5th 2008 7:41PM
The original Eee concept gave Asus a product in a market that is becoming increasingly competitive (tiny margins) - how long would it takebefore MSI or Acer took the market leadership from them?
'having it all' is what Apple have - High sales, high margins, high profits.
Asus are trying build up the Eee brand in order to rival Apple, they have to use Eee while it still represents something new and innovative. They are therefore under great time pressure, and there is of course the risk of brand dilution
Andy TGD @ Jun 5th 2008 2:46PM
Dude, its like Eee Thursday or something. Not that I object or anything. :)
JimReaper @ Jun 5th 2008 2:47PM
Why not just stick with eee pc and expand the Asus brand?
nz @ Jun 5th 2008 2:48PM
Why is the PIXAR logo cut off on the sides? By the time Luxo jumps on the "i" the entire logo is in frame. Could the folks setting up the display not figure out "Zoom" -- or is this a serious shortcoming of the TV?
Hooterman @ Jun 5th 2008 3:04PM
Ah, good call. At first I assumed it was some idiot that had it zoomed. But then I thought, no, they couldn't be that dumb, it must have just been in mid animation or something.
But you're right, great call!
Kaiser-Machead @ Jun 5th 2008 3:59PM
The logo's always in frame, as there's no panning out during the intro, but I agree, something's amiss here.
vdogg89 @ Jun 5th 2008 5:19PM
because for some reason.. in 2008, people still do not understand the concept of aspect ratio...sigh. So many people stretch the image and say, "hey! look at my new HIGH DEFINITION TV! It looks soo clear" ...idiots
Erwos @ Jun 5th 2008 2:49PM
In another couple years, this would be a much more compelling prospect; Blu-Ray drives would be cheap, the integrated GPU would have full hardware off-loading and bitstreaming support, and SSDs will have come down enough in price to make a 32gb one actually cheap enough to use in one of these. Not to mention the prospect of using a BOCUR (bi-directional CableCard) tuner or two, if they got the certification (and used Vista).
As it is now, not so much. Too bad.
holycow @ Jun 5th 2008 3:10PM
Are you serious ? I hate myself for bringing Apple in here but Asus is following in Apples footsteps. Apple has 'i' in front of everything and now Asus has 'Eee' in front of everything...
Richard Lai @ Jun 5th 2008 3:20PM
Well, holycow, "e" is before "i", and there are three of them, so Asus surely wins? :D
joe @ Jun 5th 2008 3:30PM
i before Eee, except after c
Decoy @ Jun 5th 2008 3:36PM
Eeek.
Brady @ Jun 5th 2008 3:40PM
Hey at least they're not being absolute idiots like other companies that ALSO use "i" even though they're not Apple. iRiver anyone? What does "i" mean again? At least EEE has a meaning.
Zoesch @ Jun 5th 2008 4:31PM
Eeexciting isn't it?
Daniel @ Jun 5th 2008 5:19PM
guys, get over it. it's just a tveee.
holycow @ Jun 5th 2008 5:33PM
TEeeVEee would've been better but alright..
SoloSalsa @ Jun 12th 2008 9:10PM
@joe: How do you spell "weird"?
Kaiser-Machead @ Jun 5th 2008 4:02PM
@Brady,
The first iriver product was the iMP-100 back in 2000. Apple wasn't the only, and certainly wasn't the first to use the prefix i. They simply made it the most popular.
Heh. i M P. Get it? IMP? OK I'll shut up now.
franzbonus @ Jun 5th 2008 4:05PM
Pixar rox :)
eleefece @ Jun 5th 2008 4:10PM
Sooo... asus wants the "Eee" become the new "i"???
DiRT @ Jun 5th 2008 4:29PM
Lightning McQueen FTW!
joey @ Jun 5th 2008 4:31PM
They seem to be showing the display in some sort of zoom/strech/just mode. They should have kept it in the native aspect ration of the source.
Or maybe then didnt want those "black bars" as I believe Cars is in 2.39:1
Ninjakamster (PS360 FTW!) @ Jun 5th 2008 5:02PM
Is this the first TV from Asus? Don't recall them making TVs before.
But why put the EEE brand unless it somehow syncs up with the EEE PCs or something like that.
gaz.wong @ Jun 5th 2008 5:44PM
Is it me or are Asus planning worldwide domination???
Stephen Barnes @ Jun 5th 2008 5:59PM
I'd like an Eee can opener please.
sinai @ Jun 5th 2008 6:17PM
i don't know which prefix i hate more, the popping-up-everywhere "Eee" or the annoyingly ubiquitous "i"
Sun @ Jun 5th 2008 6:23PM
I can barely sEee the 'R' in Pixar
Greg Mcp @ Jun 5th 2008 6:58PM
How do you say "Eee"?
Is it "ee-ee" or "ee-ee-ee"? Or you do do a sort of rollercoaster scream "eeeeee!", and if so how long to do you extend the eeeing for?
Jake @ Jun 5th 2008 7:20PM
Looks like ASUS should spend some more time working on their eeeAspectRatio, unless of course they were demoing using the Chinese blackmarket knockoff of Cars from the little known ")ixap Animation Studi".

bebop @ Jun 5th 2008 7:59PM
This is just a TV, rather than an all in one, right? So how is it "somewhat intriguing"? (Other than removing the sides of the picture...)
fgpx78 @ Jun 6th 2008 9:59AM
Does it play...well you know what?
