ASUS intros the Eee Monitor all-in-one PC, says more Eee models on the way
Clearly intent on dismembering and destroying competition in every facet of the personal computing world, ASUS has finally unveiled that all-in-one, iMac-esque addition to its Eee lineup we told you about in January. Dubbed the Eee Monitor, the device will range in the 19- to 21-inch size, sport a built-in TV tuner, and will be priced at around $500. The system is expected to ship sometime in September along with it's 42-inch big brother, the Eee TV, and two other mystery objects known as the Eee S1 and Eee K1. We can only hope that this news paves the way for the Eee Phone and Eee Pants.

"Base specs include the just launched 1.6GHz Intel Atom N270 CPU, speedy 802.11n Wi-Fi and Gigabit Ethernet networking, four USB ports and a multi-card reader. You then choose your choice of operating system (Windows XP or Linux), DDR memory (512MB to 2GB) and hard disk (80GB to 250GB."
Me too.
OneLove @ Jun 5th 2008 4:39PM
too much EEE news. I feel sick. :/
mingistech @ Jun 5th 2008 1:02PM
Okay... If I could get Leopard on this baby it would make a great little Hackintosh.
Najakwa @ Jun 5th 2008 1:05PM
agreed. station.
fred @ Jun 5th 2008 1:02PM
Are these guys on E?
These seem to release a new Eee product a week.
thatrotierkid @ Jun 5th 2008 1:44PM

haha sorry had to be said
mister XR @ Jun 5th 2008 2:36PM
Whatever happened to the "one hit per headbanger" rule?
Jarhead2012 @ Jun 5th 2008 8:30PM
Eeek! *swoons*
Superevil @ Jun 5th 2008 1:04PM
Well my excitement has just turned to disappointment. It looks like a big ass picture frame.
fred @ Jun 5th 2008 1:06PM
All flat screen displays look like "a big ass picture frame".
Superevil @ Jun 5th 2008 2:14PM
Not when they have normal stands wiseass
john @ Jun 5th 2008 1:05PM
What about an Eee Pod?
Jhongerkong @ Jun 5th 2008 3:15PM
Or a WEee
Jon2309 @ Jun 5th 2008 1:05PM
Ok, if that's £250, sign me up.
Jakob Henner @ Jun 5th 2008 1:39PM
Sorry I just checked this is not for you, it costs £255.5. ;)
Richard Lai @ Jun 5th 2008 1:51PM
Actually, it's £255.6 when I checked just now.
CJ @ Jun 5th 2008 7:35PM
I'll match your 256.6 and raise you 256.7.
Jezza @ Jun 5th 2008 1:06PM
E is the new i.
ddub @ Jun 5th 2008 1:17PM
Ten years or so ago 'e' was used quite frequently before the ipod came out.
I guess we're getting retro.
Cesar Cardoso @ Jun 5th 2008 1:33PM
Not! EEE is the new i.
farfisa @ Jun 5th 2008 1:35PM
Apparently they're also bringing back beige!
Ryan Trevisol @ Jun 5th 2008 1:46PM
No, Eee is the new i. I just hope they come up with a "W" Model.
What's that? Oh that's the new Eeew 900
Decoy @ Jun 5th 2008 3:37PM
All has been done before with the IEEE standards.
Daker @ Jun 5th 2008 1:07PM
mmm, pants
OnlyShawn @ Jun 5th 2008 1:23PM
...you want to buy joey lots of pants...
hopenglish @ Jun 5th 2008 2:04PM
Silly Engadget.... Don't you know there needs to be EEE Boxers before there could be EEE Pants?
scjessey @ Jun 5th 2008 1:12PM
If this thing (or a related device) can pump out 1080p video and run MythTV or Windows MCE, it makes a convenient head unit convergence device for the home networking crowd.
I want to be able to stream HD video from a "media server" in my basement to all the TVs in the house, but the prospect of having to buy (or make) lots of head unit PCs to accompany all the TVs was rather daunting. This unit could solve that problem for me, assuming it will accept an RJ45 up it's ass (or Wireless-N).
john @ Jun 5th 2008 1:30PM
Oooh... I hadn't considered getting the EeeBox to use as a MythTV server ... that might be an interesting prospect. Has MythTV figured out how to distribute subscriptions and to-do lists across a network of MythTV servers (so that you can have N tuners on M hosts, but only 1 subscription/to-do/program list)? If so, I could replace my 2 tuner DirecTivo with 2 EeeBoxes running MythTV. Then I just need a MythTV client for my N810...
I do like the idea of buying the Eee Monitor (I'd have called it Eee Screen, I think) as an replacement for my igloo iMac.
ddub @ Jun 5th 2008 1:17PM
I think this seems pretty nice. A tv and computer you can hang on the wall for people on a budget. Lets hope it really stays around $500.
Vince @ Jun 5th 2008 1:27PM
Only one problem:
Windoze = bad.
At least Linux is an option...
john @ Jun 5th 2008 1:34PM
Am I misremembering, or is Eee using Xandros? And thus they'll soon be using Ubuntu as Xandros is going Ubuntu as of yesterday's announcement?
If so, even more good news. I'm not a fan of the Eee PC (too big for my ultra-mobile desires), but I do like the looks of the Monitor and Box ... and if they're going to natively ship with Ubuntu, I'd go there.
Derek @ Jun 5th 2008 1:36PM
"Windoze"?
macserv @ Jun 5th 2008 1:41PM
Ya becuz u type 'win' and it dozes!!!!
u c what i did thar?
:/
Jarhead2012 @ Jun 5th 2008 8:35PM
@ macserv.
No, no I don't.
CosterMonger @ Jun 5th 2008 1:28PM
interesting, but I want it in black, 22" preferred (touch screen?)
can you fit in a 160GB 2.5" (PVR functionality)
then it would be perfect anywhere.
ry @ Jun 5th 2008 1:29PM
What it REALLY needs is a touchscreen...
If I could just slap one of those on the wall (in my kitchen) with a power cord, get it online via wifi, and it had a touchscreen? Yeah. Done. Sign me up.
It doesn't even mention built-in bluetooth. You're going to make a computer that looks like a picture frame, then needs 3+ cables running to it? *sigh*
ilh @ Jun 5th 2008 2:21PM
The eeebox has bluetooth and all the other specs are the same (minus the TV tuner and screen) so it wouldn't surprise me it the monitor has it too.
Loving what Asus are doing with the eee line. I'll be getting an eeebox and mounting it to the back of my TV for use as a SDTV recorder with a USB tuner.
Neeko @ Jun 5th 2008 1:30PM
How long will it take for someone to ask for touchscreen?
Not the next DOUCHEBAG DOWN.
MeatPop @ Jun 5th 2008 1:33PM
Apparently it takes two minutes before you asked.
DWells55 @ Jun 5th 2008 1:31PM
Wow, the fact that it has a TV tuner and is only $500 actually makes it a real competitor for smaller LCD TVs. The specs are really solid as well, this thing is shaping up to be a real deal if they can keep it at that $500 price point.
Neeko @ Jun 5th 2008 1:31PM
DAMNIT.. beat me to it.
Kaiser-Machead @ Jun 5th 2008 1:33PM
It's going to be hard justifying all of this crap to my girlfriend in our place.
"Um, sweetheart, why the hell is there a computer on the counter next to the stove?"
"Whaddaya mean why? How else can I surf the web while I cook?"
"Get rid of it"
rlynd3 @ Jun 5th 2008 2:37PM
*easy*
"i'll get rid of it when you start cooking" and then there is always the "i'll get rid of it if you get rid of some shoes" this argument is how i have been able to keep most of my crap. :)
scjessey @ Jun 5th 2008 1:34PM
My only real concern is that the "PC" aspect of the unit will go out of date significantly more quickly than the "TV" aspect.
Kaiser-Machead @ Jun 5th 2008 1:38PM
These sorts of systems are meant mainly for low-order usage, like web surfing and such. In that game the computer generally sticks around a lot longer because common tasks don't require ever increasing specs in the long run.
majortom1981 @ Jun 5th 2008 1:36PM
Perfect. HEre at the library we have been looking for a good all in one pc that runs windows to use at the circ desk. if this is good enough we might actually buy this.
bob e @ Jun 5th 2008 1:37PM
the stand looks rather perilous, hopefully this thing is wall mountable I may get one for the bedroom
Hellios @ Jun 5th 2008 1:51PM
I can't believe Asus is finally doing something right, the last time they did that was the announcement of the $199 really small laptop years ago.
