The 3G iPhone not unboxed
Hey look, that NDA box which Apple never, ever sends was opened to reveal a severely misaligned reflection. Next.
[Thanks, Hays Y.]
[Thanks, Hays Y.]

Is that a camera on the front? Does this mean video calls now? Neat.
Hopefully not real, it doesn't look as good.
agree with TJ
misaligned reflection my ASS. engadget, its the fricking envelope.
stop posting BS
@BYOPC
The angle of the envelope doesn't match the angle of the envelope's reflection on the phone. Stop complaining if your not going to at least look analyze the picture a little closer. There are a couple of things wrong with it. However, the angle is one of the best indicators of a fake.
The Refleciton of the upper apple is from the letter, not the cd/dvd case.
oh wow it has 3G, thats sooooooooooooooooo worth the hype.
It's hard to judge if it's a manip or not without trying to replicate the reflection yourself. I did this, it is spot on. Engadget must have 'severely misaligned eyeballs' to overlook it like that. I actually believe this is the real deal, but it's still good people yell FAAAAKE so they feel the need to send in more of those photos.
I bet this is the new 2.8" iPhone nano, which will probably come in diff colors. Pic looks real to me. When you put it in proportion to other stuff in the photo, it appears somewhat smaller.
That small circle on the front would more than likely be the same light sensor that is on the current iPhone that causes the screen to turn off when held to your ear and adjusts screen brightness based on ambient lighting. It can't be seen on the current gen phones because that area is black. At least that is my speculation if this photo is even real.
Hey look at that Thomas Ricker spreading around such an obvious hoax.
My god you're stupid.
no u
nice comeback.
witty, too.
No, both of you
Dyranios's roflcopter goes soi soi soi soi
you've been VITULLOED!
eww... the front looks terrible... WHAT HAPPENED TO BLACK?! Why would they change it to whatever the deuce that is? I might just go buy a 16GB one. Man I hope this is fake
it totaly is fake. either way i might buy a current one after the 3g comes out. they will be (relatively) cheap!
love that dog avatar....do you by any chance have a higher res full pic or something? I'd love to get it :)
Leo can haz creepy??
Go ahead and buy the current iphone, you won't have access to 3G, the software upgrade does not include 3G, in fact it can't. 3G is the radio. It's a shame there are still folks who think they can upgrade the iphone 1.0 to 3G.
peerless: zuh?

Peerless, learn to read? He said he'd buy a current gen because they'd be cheap. Never said anything about wanting 3G. A lot of markets don't have 3G (I can only pick it up when I'm within a few miles of DC or Baltimore) so it's not a selling feature.
Does the link actually work for anyone?
Nope doesn't work, the whole website is offline
It can sense your disbelief.
If you believe strong enough that it's real it will work.
Hmm. I think this could be an Apple plan to cause confusion.
pretty good mock-up though. I wish there was a front facing camera. Could Ryan have missed something in the 3G firmare?
@raid
link doesn't work for me either
Second to post, first to fail!
Looks real.
Looks like a front cam.
Looks great too.
But, it's not. Sorry kid.
However, yes, a front facing camera would be quite nice.
Oh, *now* I get the "seriously mis-aligned reflection" bit. But I think the reflection might be of the letter sticking out of the box, not the CD holders. In which case this might not be a fake. But yeah, I prefer the all-black front.
You're correct. I wouldn't be surprised if this article was taken down/edited within the next few minutes to save face.
indeed, we're looking at the reflection of the logo from the paper. Try to recreate that reflection yourself from the same viewing angle on your own phone.
Thomas
Thomas, are you thinking that the blue Apple logo on the paper is the one being reflected onto the screen?
To me it looks like there's another smaller Apple logo at the top of the letter. This is the reflection that I see.
I curse your comment editing abilities.
yeah, the blue one in the corner since you can see the finely printed text reflected too.
I still think it's a seperate reflection that's on the section of the paper that's folding over.
I demand a poll!
What does seem fake though is the video calling camera. There seems to be noise around it.
THE 3G IPHONE IS SO AWESOME, IT BENDS LIGHT WAVES
hurr hurr hurr
It's possible that it's a physical mock-up, too. It can be _both_ not photoshopped, and not legit.
Also, obligatory--
This looks shopped. I can tell from some of the pixels and from seeing quite a few shops in my time.
Maybe it's just me..but I actually managed to recreate a similar reflection..granted it was on my ipod video which CAN'T bend light rays..but I still did it ...
Who knows eh?
Damn, foiled!
Next time I'll remember not to use pixels :)
Milkshakes
I concur.
I drink them. I drink them up.
Engadget always calls bullshit before they look at stuff right, the reflection is obviously of the letter, not the cd cover, as you can see the writing right next to the apple logo. The reflection is actually aligned quite right... now with that said, the thing is fugly, so I still hope its just a *really good* photoshop fake
Exactly. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to take 3 seconds to examine the reflection to know that it is indeed of the letter and not the booklet (it's not even the CD case).
Actually, for the reflection to be at that angle, the case would have to be at about 15-20 degrees off level. unless it's some trick of the angle, i don't think it is.
Whoop, scratch that, i didn't notice that the paper sticking out of the top was the letter everyone has been talking about. didn't notice the apple logo at the top.
it's a real/good reflection.
I don't know whether to laugh or cry at the posters who failed to read the "The 3G iPhone not unboxed" bit.
Maybe because the headline and short blurb make no sense at all?
"Not unboxed" to me sounds like a joke, as in, it hasn't been taken out of the box, the box has only been opened.
First time I clicked on the "NDA box that Apple never, ever sends" link it just opened another copy of this page, so I didn't realize this was related to the earlier item.
meh. Engadget is not known for clarity in writing.
NDA = Non-Disclosure Agreement
It would be called a NDA box because it would have a Non-Disclosure Agreement to prevent the recipient from revealing information about the contents. But as the writer is pointing out, Apple doesn't do that.
OMGOMGOMGOMGOMGOMGOMGOMGOMGOMGOGM
#care
that has got to be the worst photoshopped camera lens ive ever seen. Its just a gray dot that doesnt curve at all with how the phones sideways
I'm going to laugh my ass off when all these turn out to be real!! :D
seconded
thirded
it's ought to happen
That's completely unprecedented.
*plays with friend's iPod "fatty"*
Blogs: Apple would never make the nano all squat..fake, fake, fake.
Comments: fake, fake, fake, fake.
Jobs: Heres the ipod fatty
Blogs: Ohhhhh...I see what you did there.
Exactly 'Nomi'. Like that fake Apple keyboard last year Engadget was ranting on, which was real in the end. These photos are real Engadget. You've got it wrong. Get ready to eat your words, cause you're still Ryan from the Block ;) (well at least the faaaaaaaaaaaake story was)
Huh Brendan? You mean the iMac keyboard? Doesn't sound like a rant to me.
http://www.engadget.com/2007/07/27/is-this-the-new-imac-keyboard/
Thomas
That reflection looks fine to me. That could be an aluminum front, which would fit with Apple's PVC elimination by year-end goal.
There's no PVC to eliminate on the front of the iPhone. It's glass.
I love how this front-facing camera feature (which would be useful) which was never mentioned as a coming feature to the iphone has made it into all these mockups. It'll just give nay-sayers or fence-sitters a reason to complain of missing features on the day of launch or "wait for the next iteration". I'd be happy with 3G, dirt cheap downloadable apps (who wouldn't download NES for 0.99? That guy's going to be rich), and OTA .Mac (or whatever it's called) syncing. GPS would be nice but it's not absolutely necessary.
A month after selling my iPhone, I just want my digital mistress back.
Therapy called, they want you back.
what are you talking about NES? Somebody made an emulator for jailbroken iPhones... theres no way nintendo will allow that to be sold in their store, and games will still be 15 bucks if it was, because there is demand for it.
And GPS is already all but confirmed.
Nintendo Emulators are NOT illegal. ROMs are not illegal IF you use a device to create the ROM yourself from a Cartridge you own. There are emulators for PC and Mac that you have to pay for (Sixtyforce for example). These aren't illegal.
Just because 99.99% of the usage of a program is illegal does not make the program itself illegal, i.e. Bittorrent. A legal Bittorrent client for the iPhone could also be released.
Take a look at the Pandora and several other hardware devices that exist for the sole purpose of emulating long-dead consoles. Nintendo and Sony haven't gone after them.
And in conclusion, the author of NES.app is planning on rebuilding the app in the SDK when it is complete in June.
Who bothers to create these things?
(the fakes, not apple products... -.-).
People with too much time on their hands? Creative people who enjoy working hard for zero pay?
Good question. It's either Apple fanboys who want to be the coolest kid on the block for the 2 hours it takes for the hoax to be debunked, then shunned for the rest of their lives..
Or anti-Apple 'tards who think that by wasting their time photoshopping stuff they're making the people who believe them look stupid?
fanman, I commend you on your avatar.
well you see how many hits these pictures get? even endgaget can't fight the ad revenue these "fake pictures" generate.. everything is driven by money.. engadget just put a new spin on it by calling them fake from the get go.. still being able to post the pictures to generate the hits and ad revenue..
if it don't make dollars.. it don't make cents..
I have created more than one fake Apple product to be featured on various blogs in the blogosphere including Engadget, and from my experience, I have done it for the intellectual challenge of outthinking other people. Originally, you could just photoshop a picture, but then people starting delving into the EXIF data, so I had to a find a way to fake EXIF data. After that I made a few physical models, meaning all the EXIF data was real, all the reflections were real, the only thing that wasn't real was the product itself. It's all about trying to figure out how people think and then finding a way to circumvent that mode of thought.
As to why most of us fake Apple products? It's in demand. If you are a faker, looking to hone your skills, you have to get as many eyeballs on your fake as possible (More people = more people to point out your "bad pixels"). As Apple product speculation always gets tons of views, it is the obvious choice for the determined faker.
So, which fakes are mine? I'll never tell...
^-^Foxy~>
Thomas Ricker, if this turns out to be real... Will you buy me one?
I don't want him to buy me one, but to admit they called it ugly if it's true. :P
wow, you even suck at being a moran
the reflection isnt misaligned. its of the paper not the cd
I second this... It's obviously of the paper. Look at the apple logo on the top left of the paper
link dont work. and yeah a coloured front is bad. the point of the black front makes the screen look even bigger than it is.
"he point of the black front makes the screen look even bigger than it is."
Just like Apple's Fanboys' penis..
exactly. as if my apple dick wasnt big enuff
Ike Turner @ Jun 7th 2008 3:43PM
"he point of the black front makes the screen look even bigger than it is."
Just like Apple's Fanboys' penis..
Haha! Lulz. Yeh. I use a black iPhone faceplate to make my penis look even bigger than it is! You got me!
...just like Ike used Tina's black eyes to make him look like a bigger man!
idiot.
when you say idiot are you refering to me?
It looks like an current generation iPhone with an iSkin Revo case for the iPod touch.
Well, if this stays up for more than an hour then its probably a fake. Apple's legal team would be all over this if it were real
Anyone have any thoughts on pricing for iphone 3G data plans?
idk. Does ATT charge more for 3G plans as found on their other phones? I don't think so, but never looked specifically.
iPhone 8GB - too much
iPhone 16GB - way too much
iPhone 32GB with 3G, GPS, and Jesus stick - WTF?!?!?!
3G plans for bberrys and other smartphones are 35 a month.
EDGE for iphone now is 20.
Price hike coming?
@Reid: no. The unlimited non-smartphone plan (delineated by AT&T to be any device without a physical qwerty) including 3G is $19/month. However, this was during a dry patch for AT&T when they had no QWERTY "Texting" phones available, only smartphones and T9 phones.
My bet is the iPhone plan is the iPhone plan and it will stay the same price. AT&T's never charged a premium for faster access (you can use an Edge phone on their unlimited plan), and I hope they don't start now.
For me, 3G won't really mean I will use a LOT more data per month, I'll just use it quicker. ;-)
for reg phones(non pda) its $15/mo for unl data... for pda/blackberry its $30.
Wow, you even suck at SPELLING moron.
Besides the fact its grey I dont think it looks /that/ bad, if it is a fake then I've seen much worse
Second look and seems that the whole thing is one big sticker
Actually, as other stated, the reflection is fine. It is just from the letter.
Salak Kamil.
Haha...The "camera" on front looks like if someone pasted the pic into paint and used the spray thingy to put it on..Doesnt it?
i've gotta say the front facing camera hole looks totally photoshopped... the reflection is fine but... the camera hole is fake.
