Toshiba unleashes the Qosmio X305 gaming laptop
For those of you dreaming of a super-fast gaming laptop that's also adorned with a chic red and pink "flame" pattern, your days of searching are over. Enter the Qosmio X305, Toshiba's entry into the lap-cooking gamer notebook market. The X305 features a 3GHz dual-core Intel CPU, a 1GB NVIDIA GeForce GTX graphics chipset, dual 7200RPM 200GB hard drives, up to 4GB of RAM, and sports a 17-inch 1680 x 1050 LCD display. Of course it's also kitted out with a whopping four-speaker Harmon Kardon sound system as well as S/PDIF and HDMI ports. The pink powerhouse is set to launch July 14th, no word on price just yet.

but can it play crysis ?
Red and Pink flames...
Red I can understand but PINK??!? seriously wtf
I always bought Toshiba laptops before and really liked them but the price is probably going to astronomical... and unless they've worked out some better cooling designs...
Anyone else bought an Acer Aspire 6920-6422? I've been running mine for 5-6 hours at a time and it doesn't get warm at all. And no I haven't tried Crysis.
you would be able to play crysis, and tab out to play doom on this thing.
d@mnit - I meant to start a different post!
it certainly is flaming.
I'm surprised the track pad is so far to the left, because your palm would always be resting in that part when you are playing FPS games.
would you play FPS games with the track pad? I tried it and it didn't end well for me.
I don't like the placement of the trackpad either, but the rationale behind it is that the trackpad is below the center of the keyboard so that your forearms don't touch it while typing.
I actually like the trackpad placement, but it only works for right handers. Instead of drawing your arm back to use the trackpad, you can pivot your wrist. It might not seem like much, but it gets convenient after switching back/forth between the keyboard and trackapad. Also, when we type, our forearms approach the keyboard at an angle; they aren't parallel when they type (or they shouldn't be!). This probably would allow room for the trackpad.
ps. Most laptops touchpads have software that allows you to disable the trackpad when a mouse is connected.
is that supposed to be poetic or something? The same day as the iPhone 3G?
Isn't the release date the 11th for the iPhone, or are you just bringing up the iPhone to start a rukkus..?
shut up about that shit
Well it looks as if the disk drive is almost in the center of the laptop and putting pressure on that while spinning is probably not a good idea.. Also, if that's not the case, sometimes they move it for protection of other hardware, ie. hdd or something. Lastly, I don't think anyone games with a trackpad.
but surely your palm would still be resting on it, whether you're using it or not - and would that not interfere with the mouse control? or can you deactivate trackpads these days (i dont have a new laptop)
^ Yes you can deactivate most of them.
WOW~
I know you're excited, but to answer your question, yes it can play World of Warcraft.
WOW
The WOW starts now.
You can deactivate track pads when a mouse is connected on most if not all laptops now.
Anyone else have a problem with the DVD drive on the front?
no
The problem is, this is the Jason Voorhees model, so you can only play hack 'n slash games on it.
Man you guys are lovingthat pic to day huh?
It's here^^^

In other news, the DOD has discovered that if you unplug the fans then fire up crysis, the laptop doubles as air to surface nuke.
Wow that thing is UGLY. Did Toshiba just give up on making good electronics after the death of HD-HVD. My biggest gripe here is the 17 inch 1680 x 1050 screen. Are you kidding me? 1920 x 1200 should be standard on all gaming computers w/ that screen size. Anybody looking to shell out fat cash for a gaming laptop should buy the Dell XPS 1730.
Why add more pixels than needed, it will only make it harder for the graphics card. I'm running a 17"@WSXGA+ right now and I'm more than happy with the number of pixels this screen pack.
I'm not saying that WUXGA is always overkill, I'm only saying that for a large part of the (gaming) population WUXGA is overkill and therefore a costly con..
One, ugly is an opinion. Don't like it, you can a) Beg Toshiba to make an assortment of skins (common sense suggests not every X305 will look the same), b) Skin it yourself, or c) Don't buy one, shut up, and get that Dell you love so much.
Two, ONLY THE INTERNAL LCD is 1680x1050. The HDMI port (driven by GTX graphics *ahhh*) would be more than happy to serve up some 1080p at home... where the real entertainment is.
I, for three, will be buying this beast! Qosmio FTW
Man... I didn't even realize it was Friday the 13th today. Oh, Engadget. What would I do without you :)
huh? doubt this is a prank, engadget can't afford to lose anymore credibility.
Damn yo, if i had to purchase a windows pc this would be it.
i personally like really small laptops (not eeepc small, and mba thin) but i always wanted a a 17incher to dominate video editing with.
and those specs are impressive, i don't play pc games but it surely would a great overall pc too
Yea, same boat here dude
I got the ASUS G1S-X3 which is a 'gamer laptop' but i got it because its a great video editing machine (15.4" 1680x1050 display, HDMI out, T7500, 8600M)
It's kinda sad because you can find this laptop on ebay for under $1000 now, a sweeet sweeeet deal.
"dual hard drives"
hopefully those are in raid 0 for performance, otherwise lets take one of those out for power savings.
Because its those damn hard drives that will suck up all the power in these things...
Too bad it's a Toshiba. I have had my Toshiba G35-AV660 for just about a year and a half now and the motherboard has failed four times now. It is currently at the repair shop now and has been there since May 7th. Toshiba has the shittiest quality.
Bottom line: NEVER BUY TOSHIBA!
I don't know what to tell you; I've purchased Toshiba laptops all my life and never had a single problem.
I've owned three Toshiba notebook computers and they have all been quite good.
Dual 200GB 7200rpm drives, come one where are the dual 320GB 7200rpm or even 500GB drives? If they are going for a high end book lets go with a high book.
On a side note Engadget sure is fond of the guy in the hockey mask today.
"come one"??? oh... you meant "come one, come all" right?.. haha.. moron... i love people who post on here who A. Can't spell worth shit, and B. have the grammatical skills of a 3 year old... way to go guys!!! losers
@brad
Well thanks for your input brad, every posting needs an asshole and you have stepped up to fill the void. While we are on the topic of grammar, let’s talk about capitalization. So I take it your name is Brad, is that correct? Wouldn't a name be capitalized? Or maybe you stuck with the little b, because it fits in with your "little bitch" mentality. Not to mention my one single extra 'e' seems so bad in comparison to your complete lack of proper punctuation. How many question marks or periods at the end of a sentence? That would probably be more of a concern if your reply actually contained a complete sentence.
Anyway if Engadget or CNN can't be bothered to grammar check their postings, why should I?
Could this thing be any uglier? Oops.. sorry, I probably jinxed it, HP is working on a response for sure.
yeah, just check out the new gateways... they're clad in orange trim.
the new gateways look amazing. I have one... best gaming laptop for under 1500 bones
Is there such a thing as 2.5" 500 GB SATA drive yet? Not being cheeky, I just haven't seen any.
Whats up with Jason
Joshua is putting Jason in all of his articles today. Seems like a lot of people don't know who the "guy in the hockey mask" is...
Just Wiki "Friday the 13th", they are a horror series, and today is Friday the 13th. I actually think it's smart and funny to see Jason in all these technology pics. Good job Josh, good job.
so word on price yet
Word.
so0o0o what kind of graphics is this thing packing? "1GB GTX" is kinda vague and could lead one to assumption.
Looks like style and gaming laptops still have a long way to go. I think people would laugh at whoever uses this machine rather than be impressed with its performance, which sadly, will be masked under this "ugly" (for a lack of better word) design.
no 1920x1200?
I still don't see who buys these... I mean if you REALLY wanna game at hi-res that badly, buy/build a desktop for half as much that will put this thing to shame. And if you need mobility, grab a decent little laptop as a companion to the gaming desktop. If you need portability and gaming in one system, get a Fragbox. Either way, no one NEEDS to game @ crazy resolutions on a laptop... 12x10 isn't going to kill you. And this thing is FUUUUUUUGLY. and heavy. and battery life... LOL. And what the hell is the point of a laptop this expensive without a 19x12 display? Just buy an XPS or a Gateway or a MBP. Save MONEYS ----> get a better laptop.
The reason I bought a gaming laptop was because my desktop is in a bad location. Maybe I wanna sit at my coffee table, watch some TV and do a little fragging instead of sitting in the corner at my desktop. I have a studio so that is the only place it could really go. I used to swear I would never be a laptop guy but after using one for work I got used to it and would never go back. My previous laptop was not good for gaming and since I was looking for a new laptop I got Toshiba's X205-SLI5 and I love it. It is reasonably affordable as far as gaming laptops go. Sure I could have built a very decent gaming desktop for that price (better than the laptop) but I am not a hard-core PC gamer, I have my PS3 and XBox360 for gaming but I enjoy some PC exclusive title as well like Flight Simulator
Don't you mean SO no word on price just yet? You guys should double check your sentences and if you do then triple check :p but why is toshiba always making such huge laptops and pink? It should have gamerchick engraved in it
Did anyone else notice that engadget is photo shopping Jason into their pictures?
When you see it you'll shit bricks!
this laptop is good but please, PINK and red? why not black or full red?
wait since when was toshiba calling its mediacentric notebooks qosmio? i always thought it was qosimo. (in peter griffin voice) huh
OMG!....Please, do I need to see my doctor or am I seeing Jason Voorheese?...Just wondering if it's just me because the next time I see his face I'm gonna pop myself.
In related news: Hispanic interest in gaming laptops has risen sharply since the release of the x305
dude, i have this thing, and its unbelievable. yes, i can alt tab crysis to guild wars to doom 3 to fear. believe this is unstoppable.
