Price cuts and 60GB Xbox 360 rumored for E3
E3 is set to roll next month from July 15th to the 17th. With it comes the annual deluge of gaming rumors. Today we've got a pair for Microsoft. No, not another Blu-ray Xbox 360 whisper. Rather, we've got a resurrection of the 60GB Xbox 360 courtesy of Trusted Reviews as well as a US hardware price cut (and a nod towards a new SKU) according to EEDAR analyst Jesse Divnich. Trusted Reviews' source claims that the 60GB rig will drop sometime in the first 10-days of August after an E3 announce. Hear that Sony, care to respond?Read -- Price cuts

cant wait ive been waiting for a 360 but im waning to the ps3 for MGS4 which will be beyond belief . . .
sinjinn @ Jun 16th 2008 8:16AM
dont think mgs4 is enough reason to buy a ps3 over a 360, but the fan noise of the 360 is.
Matt @ Jun 16th 2008 9:58AM
Unless you sit on top of your 360 while playing, you can't even hear the fans.
Rig @ Jun 16th 2008 10:21AM
Actually that is the disc drive not the fan you well informed blog troll you.
phinnvr6 @ Jun 16th 2008 9:13PM
40gb PS3 is whisper quiet, you can't even hear it during quiet moments in Bluray movies.
Matthew @ Jun 16th 2008 8:11AM
will it be able to play MGS4 after the price drops?
hrld161 @ Jun 16th 2008 8:13AM
i dont think so because MGS4 is a playstation platform game like halo is for the 360 . . .
iczer2 @ Jun 16th 2008 8:22AM
No, but it'll play Gears of War, Halo 3, and a host of other great games that won't see the light of day on a PS3.
Many, many, more games I might add.
JerkfacedFed @ Jun 16th 2008 9:03AM
hrld161: not true at all, metal gear games are published by konami, not sony, like the way microsoft publishes gears of war, halo, and ninja gaiden. those games will not come to a competitor's console, but any 3rd party published game can very easily be done once the "timed exclusivitiy" period is up.
think gta3 on playstation > xbox 6 months later, unreal tournament 3, sony paid millions to not release on 360 for 6 months.
another couple facts, metal gear solid 2 and 3 came out on xbox, and metal gear solid 1 came out on the pc published by microsoft.
konami would have to be dumb to not port their game over to where the high attach rate gamers are and make some real money.
Eric M. @ Jun 16th 2008 9:03AM
Most 360 exclusives are available on the PC platform, so PS3 users atleast have the option to play them on the PC. PS3 exclusives on the other hand are only available on the PS3.
hrld161 @ Jun 16th 2008 9:58AM
ok . . .srry i didnt kno . . . hopefully they make it for the 360 . . .
Brad @ Jun 16th 2008 12:05PM
Metal Gear Solid 2 and 3 was never released on the zboz, where are u getting ur facts from. MGS4 is never going to be on xbox, do u not understand taht they use the whole 50gigs of space on teh disc. They even advertise it right in the game of how you dont have to switch discs, its not coming to xbox, they never have had plans too.
Chris @ Jun 16th 2008 1:13PM
Brad, MGS 2 was on the Xbox.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metal_Gear_Solid_2#Substance
Lamerz @ Jun 16th 2008 7:25PM
@Brad
Shit, now I have to sell my Xbox and get a zboz? Will the insanity ever end??
phinnvr6 @ Jun 16th 2008 9:16PM
Who cares about Halo 3 once your done with the decent single player campaign though. Warhawk blows it away for online play with its huge 32 player servers and super fast high frame rate gameplay
Dr. Evil @ Jun 17th 2008 1:16PM
Wait, what happened to the Yboy.
hrld161 @ Jun 16th 2008 8:22AM
@ iczer2
that is true . . .
hrld161 @ Jun 16th 2008 8:24AM
@ sinjinn
ive been playing mgs forever so i want to get MGS4 naturally but still i mean come on if it was on a 360 i would buy it in a heart beat . . .
technophobe @ Jun 16th 2008 8:28AM
Does anyone know if these price cuts will be US only?
Here in the UK we only had price cuts a couple of months ago, and I am probably going to buy an xbox this summer, should I wait for the price to drop?
hrld161 @ Jun 16th 2008 8:35AM
i would think so . . . u never kno just wait until after E3
LT73 @ Jun 16th 2008 8:43AM
60 GB??
Why 60 GB??
We can purchase 500 GB hard drives for under $100
60 GB is a joke. It's like selling you a horse, but breaking it's leg right before it arrives.
BradVT @ Jun 16th 2008 8:46AM
Well, compared to just a 20gb harddrive where the horse is dead on arrival, I would say that this is a step up.
Usagimaru @ Jun 16th 2008 8:49AM
Well considering that the 360 hard drives are basically SATA 2.5" drives and the highest you can currently buy (off Newegg at least) is 320GB; I think your statement is flawed. Although you can get a 200GB HDD for under $100.
Also what's wrong with 60GB? I know I would never fill it.
Kojak @ Jun 16th 2008 2:34PM
I don't think you can even buy 20Gb hard-drives anymore (nor 40Gb), I just think that this is the next readily available size. Any bigger and it would would come too close to the Elite's 120Gb drive. I disagree with the article speculating that the Arcade might get the 20Gb hard-drive, ideologically it changes the market it appeals to (casual gamers) and it would cost too much.
Personally I think that 3 sku's for the XBox360 is 2 too many. In this respect the PS3 has the right idea, allowing the user to change the onboard storage, and the ability to back it up. The XBox360's propriety hardware design to help them enforce DRM is unnecessarily complicated and expensive.
Vcize @ Jun 16th 2008 10:08AM
Given that on the 360 you only need that hard drive space for extra stuff and not to, ya know, play the games (ehem) 60gb should be plenty and apparently the extra 40gb comes at the cost of negative 50 dollars to you, so what the hell is there to complain about?
darkstar @ Jun 16th 2008 8:49AM
i dont care if its 99 bux. though xbox is more reliable now, the noise is intolerable!!! surprise ms havent fixed this by now!
BradVT @ Jun 16th 2008 8:49AM
I would imagine that they might upgrade the elite hard drive too, so there would be a bigger difference in capacities between the two models.
jimmy @ Jun 16th 2008 9:04AM
i don't know why they didn't do this sooner. if MS wants to push XBLM HD movie downloads they need more capacity for users to save stuff they buy. if a 720p xvid rip is 4 gb, you're not going to fit more than 4 movies onto a 20gb hd.
Neeko @ Jun 16th 2008 9:22AM
I dont care how big a hard rive they put in it. I aint buying it. Personally for me the 20gb is more then enof for game saves and demo downloads.
I stream all my media from my PC anyway. They already ripped me off on the 20gb...Your not gonna fool me again MS..NOT THIS TIME!
SimbaDogg @ Jun 17th 2008 4:42PM
There's an old saying in Tennessee, I know it's in Texas, probably in Tennessee, that says, fool me once, shame on...shame on you. Fool me...you can't get fooled again
Tran @ Jun 16th 2008 9:30AM
I think there will be a price cut. If you go to GameStop, they are offering $50 gift card for any Xbox360 system. So you figure.
cjaggers @ Jun 16th 2008 9:35AM
But will it blend?
Maestro @ Jun 16th 2008 9:46AM
The "Xbox Blu-Ray Rumor" thinks this is a fantastic idea.
kal326 @ Jun 16th 2008 10:03AM
Sweet price drop coming up, I have been waiting to upgrade to an HDMI model for a while now. I was just going to get the arcade edition and slap my existing HD on that, but if they are going to drop prices might as well wait. Now what I am really wanting to drop in price is the HDMI cable kit. $50 and all I need is the dongle that goes in the old A/V port so I can have a fiber optic out since my receiver doesn't pick up audio off the HDMI switcher built in.
Sim @ Jun 16th 2008 10:46AM
I have the 360 vga adapter cable that Target sells (psyclone or nyko, i think).
You can plug this cable and an hdmi cable in at the same time with no problem. HDMI to my LCD and optical to my receiver, woo hoo!
SimbaDogg @ Jun 17th 2008 5:03PM
@deeznuts
how bout you quit w/ the racist shiet...stupid ass
Vcize @ Jun 16th 2008 10:09AM
Why wouldn't they hold off on this for the holidays?
It looks like the 360 will drop the price in August, and Sony will probably follow with a pricecut of their own during the holidays when many more people are looking to pick up a system...
Kelmon @ Jun 16th 2008 10:35AM
Just to reiterate my consistent position with regard to the 360: I would never buy one given the quality of the hardware. This is a crying shame since the games are evidentially very good, although I still believe that they are the same as the last generation but with better graphics. I really hope that Microsoft learns its lessons from this iteration and builds a high-quality product next time. Sony did a good job with the PS3 (note: I don't own one nor am I likely to) and Microsoft should at least aim for that level of quality next time.
Sean @ Jun 16th 2008 10:47AM
Althougth this article doesn't say it. The 360 is also getting new die shrunk chips without many of the flaws in the previous version. I would encourage you, if interested, to check the system out in August with the new chips. I would say it will probaly be the version everyone will try and upgrade too.
I would say Microsoft has already learned their lesson. Nothing does that better than a billion dollar hit to the bottom line.
Sim @ Jun 16th 2008 10:51AM
I bought the halo edition 360 to sit next to my halo edtion original xbox (someone will want the set someday...right?) and I use it at least every other day for 2 to 3 hours. Never had a glitch. All my electrics are plugged into a power conditioner and they all get plenty of air circulation, though.
Kelmon @ Jun 16th 2008 12:58PM
@Sean & Sim
Cheers for the replies, but nothing would ever make me pay for a 360. Frankly, I don't trust Microsoft's QA department, which has clearly been asleep at the wheel, to suddenly have gotten their act together. The 360 was a rush job that, for reasons I still can't fathom, achieved its goal of giving Microsoft a beachhead in its war with Sony that it started with the original XBox. As dumb as it may sound, I'm not going to allow them to justify what they did, foisting a low-quality product on consumers at a premium-price, by giving them my money. Still, if you did give them your money then I am glad that at least its working out for you.
Ss @ Jun 16th 2008 10:42AM
Why not just lower the fucking price of the 120 GB HDD already? $180 for 120 GB is nothing short of ridiculous.
Sim @ Jun 16th 2008 10:52AM
It's how they are paying for the rrod refunds :)
konshuss @ Jun 16th 2008 10:44AM
fan noise is fine. i don't live in a monestary or have some kind of natural irritation regarding electrical fans, not to mention the SOUND of the game overpowers the noise. the whirring once a game starts up is somewhat comforting knowing that and the new GPU are working to chase away the RROD. as for the space, i wish i knew before i bought the Elite 120GB system that(unless there's a full hack) I will never, ever, ever need that much space. ever.
h0mi @ Jun 16th 2008 10:49AM
I really wish it were 160 not 60 gb. If they do away with 20gb systems, thats not so bad but the 60gb hard drive will probably cost $130 or so which is still a supreme rip off.
Sly Fox @ Jun 16th 2008 11:29AM
well i really was hoping on buying a 360 as soon as possible because i really don't want to wait until e3 so is there anychance i would get a rebate or something like with the iphone?
(here comes low ranked)
sinai @ Jun 16th 2008 12:25PM
ITT: people who prefer one system over another because their mothers' won't allow them to have both for christmas.
FairMan @ Jun 16th 2008 12:48PM
I think the XBOX need the price drop - its confirmed you have 16% chance of the machine breaking down even when you buy an Xbox now. No ATI or NVIDIA graphics engine & the RROD issues, jumbo jet fan noise. Dont get me wrong, the Xbox has great games, but i just wish the build was like the PS3... My Xbox died last week and my warranty has run out. Im buying a PS3 becuase its a better build, sony have mroe experience building consoles, no issues as above, and has some fantastic games : MGS4, Resistance 2, Tekken 6 & Home look great. I can change the hard drive with any 3rd party laptop drive, Playstation Network is free and its a true entertainment system, rather than just a games console.
ahow628 @ Jun 16th 2008 1:33PM
60 gig Xbox 360? So it will have the Emotion Engine and be able to play PS2 games? I'm sold...
Marty @ Jun 17th 2008 12:56PM
When comparing storage space VS value, none of the HDs are worth it.
When asking about capacity... why the hell do you need 500GB for a console? The only people who need this are hackers who are stealing games... and if you can pirate games, then you're probably skilled enough to swap the HD anyway.
I own over 15 Live games... I stream video, music and pics... and I have 2 videos I never delete, and have only used 10GB.
Even if you fill up your HD, you can delete any purchases (map packs, pics, movies, Live games, etc) and download them again later, no need to re-purchase as Live keeps track of what you own. Granted, having to manage your system would be tiresome... but if you're not willing to buy a new HD and need the space... fuck it. DELETE. (And yes, I have deleted things and downloaded them again).
Point being... I have no need for anything bigger than the 20GB HD. Nearly 3 years with it and I'm just now hitting the halfway point. It's all mental. PS3 needs more capacity because some games have to install files to the PS3, but other than that... anything over 40GB is pure hype. Theres' no true need.
