Pictures of the ThinkPad X200 surface
We got specs on Lenovo's rumored ThinkPad X200 a couple weeks ago, but we didn't really know what it looked like until now -- surprise, it looks like the X300. We're not exactly pumped about the removal of a trackpad in favor of TrackPoint nub, but we suppose something's got to give to hit that 2.9-pound starting weight. One more shot at the read link.

and when apple make a 3lb computer with a 9cell replaceable battery and every i/o feature imaginable, you can make that comment.
They don't make anything that small!! How is your comment relevant?
uhm... how is it not relevant... apple does make a 3 lb computer... and last time i checked... maybe 1% of the entire population actually caries around a spare battery to change out..
god some people are so stupid
Great! the nipple is the best. The only time the inefficient touch pad is of use is when using the side to scroll...
The benefits of the trackpoint
- hands on keyboard - more efficient
- faster and more accurate pointing
- faster scroll with the trackpoint scroll button
- faster to move the pointer in one motion...
I suspect most of you that are poo pooing the track point haven't used one (or are apple users).
Don't knock on all Apple users. I'd give me Macbook up for an X200 or X300 in a heartbeat, provided that the X200/X300 was running Windows XP with Litestep installed or a Linux build. We're not all clak so lay off.
@ Za
Don't worry I am not trashing all Apple users just the lunatic fringe that seems to think that what computer they use says something about their lifestyle or what kind of person they are. The same demographic seems to use their irrational love for a brand as a religion. Clak should be banned he is a poor ambassador for Apple users. Furthermore I have no idea why such individuals feel the need to crap on every computer / phone related post (Clak get an education and a life).
I view these machines as tools The ThinkPad is a solid, reliable machine and are as good as laptops come. I use a T60 and it is fantastic the attention to workflow. quality, usability and survivability are unparalleled.
For those that complain that you need touchpad to scroll.
You can hold the middle button and move the trackpoint to scroll. Easy and so convenient
@Clak:
Having strong and sincere conviction about a subject does not negate that you're being a troll/shit-stirrer. I don't question whether or not you really feel the way you do, it's immaterial to your behavior which at it's simplest is to ruffle feathers? Amirite? It's not merely having thoughts contrary to other readers. That's fine. And that could've been expressed as, "It doesn't have OS X, so I don't think I'll be buying it." But trolls express their thoughts in the absolute so as to stir the shit and once the shit-fest has commenced, "Naw brah', I'm just expressing myself. It's not my fault you can't handle when I'm keepin' it real."
Bottom-line, trolls/fanboys are all expressing themselves. That doesn't make it any less nauseating or any more valid. By mere virtue of being your expression it doesn't necessarily grant itself value or propriety in a discussion.
The Dude, you know you could just ignore Clak, right? I think he's hilarious because even though most of what he says is very clearly designed to piss people off, they don't understand he is baiting them. And he wins. He certainly doesn't get riled up but YOU do. And others do. He's SO GOOD at this. And frankly, Engadget's doing the best it can do in terms of dealing with it - they do nothing at all. It shows they are not totalitarian overlords.
I don't understand why you were voted down - Macbook/Macbook Pro/Macbook Air trackpads actually are more usable than their PC counterparts, and I also do not understand the correlation between trackpad and replaceable battery. Perhaps many voters just see Mac and decide to vote down. I use all OSs, and have had laptops from Dell, Toshiba, Sony, and Apple, and have sold Gateways, Acers, and Averatecs as well, and the Apple laptops actually *do* have more usable trackpads. I would love to see the same on PCs.
Just to prove I am not an Apple troll, I think the Macbook as a TERRIBLE screen and poorly-designed wrist rests that break under normal usage. Mini-dvi is also a terrible idea. However, the trackpad is very, very good.
Honestly, it looks a lot like the current X61, just with the bezel on the screen looking a bit different to accommodate the camera.
I've also been using the Trackpoint since back in the salad days of the 600X and I can honestly say I'd never go back to using a trackpad.
in a word -- clitmouse

I was about to post that same link until I saw you had.
Ok. I need to specify a 3lb computer with a usable footprint
13.3 and razor thin is cute. But the X series is designed to be very small (fit in to all sorts of bags etc) and be very comfortable on an airplane. You can use this thing in econ class when the person in front reclines.
Lenovo actually has airline seats in their testing lab to make sure the laptops fit and don't crack if hit by a reclining seat back.
If I could get OSX on the next gen T61P I probably wouldnt even consider getting a new macbook pro or an imac for media work. This way I could have all my computing needs (windows and mac) covered by the best hardware.
I'm a nub man myself (T42p, x60s, z60t). Its all what you are used to but not having to move my hand from the keys to scroll the page is brilliant.
You guys are both really grinding away on that reply button eh?
clak let it go. we know you hate windows, and bill, and ballmer, and everything that has to do with it So you dont use one. awesome.
Can you give some Window users a bit of a break sometimes? If someone chooses to use windows it might be because they prefer it, arent huge computer users, or cant afford apple.
Leave it be homie :D

So im both and Ubuntu user/Christian. Blam away if you feel like it. Just know i wont be here to defend myself so have fun :)
Oh and as far as Thinkpads are concerned (which scrolling up I remembered what this post was about), I have always associated businessmen/stockdudes who RAKE in cash with thinkpads and crackberries haha.
I think this is a cool breakaway from the norm. And clak and whoever other Linux/Apple users can vouch for, you don't get noticed or get any prestige for doing what everyone else is doing, do you?
LOVE EVERYONE!!!! YAY!!!
Can anyone out there help me with a problem with my Mac;
I want to hide my desktop icons. I know that OSX can do this because I can do it with Vista, a couple of clicks from the desktop....so definately I can do this.
My mate says that it can't be done and that I have to download some third party software.
I told him that he was full of sh1t. I said "Don't be stupid, idiot, Vista can do it, so it is simple, you just don't know how to work OSX, and OSX is simple and intuitive". (I use the word "idiot" , it makes me feel clever, even though my mom says that I am not).
Anybody out there that can help me, I gotta tell my Mac lovin' buddy that he is a loser who does not know OSX ?
Now if only IBM/Lenovo could move the Fn key right of Ctrl and the Esc key back down to the left of F1 like every-bloody-body else does!
I only got my new T61 yesterday and oh how I forgot how painful editing via vim and emacs is on a Thinkpad! I've been spending the last two years on a Compaq which came after a R40.
@ lenovo headquarters:
Quick! Where do we find a smaller envelope?
Trackpoint >>>>>>> trackpad any time.
Way to go Lenovo. Sometimes a step back in time is progress. This is an example of that.
I have to see the specs on this one before I decide wether its better then the TZ or not. So far the TZ is the best ultraportable but I love how thinkpads are built like tanks. No trackpad is unfortunate but can be compensate with tons of other features.
why does nobody complain aubout the shitty WXGA?
i hope there will be an WSXGA or WSXGA+ option
this thinkpad is ugly. just not like anything (or anyone) else. no exception here.
I don't particularly like touchpads because they require me to take my hand off the keyboard / typing position. With the trackpoint I can leave the hand on the keyboard and all I have to move is one finger...
Trackpoints are so much more productive (apart from possibly the new multi-touchpads a certain company recently introduced in the fruit-flavored laptops).
I switched from my 12" powerbook to a x61 w/ fedora 9 (I still have a mac desktop at home) and I don't think I am buying another mac laptop ever again. Granted, I loved my 12" powerbook (Apple -- you need to bring it back), but build quality on the x61 >> the Apple laptops I have used. I was a bit worried about the nubbin mouse, but I have found it far superior to a trackpad.
Really, you use the trackpad? I can't remember the last time I used the trackpad on my T42 / T61. Trackpoint is so much more precise and quicker...
TRACKPOINT 4-EVA!!!
Die touchy-feely pad, DIE!!!
Touchpads are horrible constructs.
The trackpoint is a far, far superior pointing device, always has been.
It would not have lasted this long on ThinkPads if that weren't the case.
I was annoyed when they added touchpads to ThinkPads, but was pleased to find that you could disable the awful things in the BIOS. Every new ThinkPad I get, that's the first thing I do.
It isnt clear if this will have LED-backlight display. I hope it doesnt have problems like some of the X61s with the LED-display. There have been reported on the Lenovo forums cases of the LCD display cracking or the frame coming apart. They apparently use double-sided sticky tape to hold the frame together.
I love the nub. If I was going to be using the mouse for an extended period of time, I'd use a small external mouse.
I love my "track nub" on my T60. More efficent.
dude, I swear by the trackpoint and thinkpads. the beveled edges are way comfortable on the wrists, you never have to move your hand off the keyboard, I've literally had a whole bottle of dasani pour over the thinkpad and absolutely nothing happened to the computer. I've dropped it, and use it all the time and never get's hot from the bottom.
amazing.
although, a backlit keyboard would make this machine PERFECT. thats my only gripe.
I believe most thinkpads have a built-in light at the top of the lid (Fn+PgUp), so not sure if there's a need for back-lit keyboard.
Another thing I've not found in other laptops - the forward/backward keys next to the arrows. Absolutely brilliant.
I've got the x60 and after I got used to the trackpoint, I could never go back to a touchpad. It's much faster.
