Santech rolls out Centrino 2-based X46 laptop

While we've yet to see the expected flood of Centrino 2-based gear, things certainly seem to be picking up as we near the end of that little delay, with Santech only the latest to debut a laptop based on the platform once known as Montevina. Dubbed the X46, this one comes packing a 15.4-inch WXGA+ display, along with your choice of Core 2 Duo processor up to 2.8GHz, up to 4GB of RAM (plus 2GB of Intel Turbo Memory). a 512MB NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT graphics card, a max 320GB hard drive (or 200GB if you want to do 7,200 rpm), and your choice of a DVD burner or Blu-ray drive. Look for this one to start shipping in Europe by June 30th, with prices starting around the $1,000 mark for the default configuration.

Just once I'd like to see a stock photo of a new computer looking more realistic with a web browser open or 200 files cluttering the desktop instead of some pretty landscape shot screensaver.
The specs/price do look pretty good on this machine though.
This is awesome! Gotta love new PC technology! It's good to see more PC makers getting closer to competition w/ the Mac. This is awesome.

Thanks Engadget for covering this!
This is awesome! Gotta love blogspam! It's good to see more contentless comments that only exist for someone to pimp their shitty blog with. This is awesome.

It's very nice to see gaming laptops getting more and more available with less intimidating prices. A couple of months later, after the dust has settled, I'll have a hefty comparison ahead of me before buying one to replace my conventional non-gaming laptop.
I just wish it didn't look so bland.
Not all that pretty but the specs are nice and the price isn't bad at all.
Isn't the 9600M GT just a die shrink of the 8600M GT?
It would be nice to see a die shrink of the 8800M GT, with the reduced heat and power we would see it in 15" laptops other than the insanely priced Alienware m15x
Totally agree, Conor.
hold on... I didn't know that.
If the 9600 is only a mini-8600 then I wouldn't consider this laptop a "gaming" laptop.
What is different about Centrino 2 compared to a Core 2 duo? Performance? Battery life? Price?
That's the "real" name now for the Montevina processors.
X46 is almost half of X86
