Alienware m17x laptop touching down nationwide
If your neighbor ordered one of these monstrosities, you probably felt the ground shake when the freight carrier dropped this bad boy off at his / her doorstep. If you were stuck in the cubicle during that whole ordeal, however, here's a gentler news flash: Alienware's brawny m17x gaming laptop is shipping right now. Initial reports from early adopters include phrases like "So huge!" and "Brobdingnagian!," which is pretty much right in line with what we were expecting to hear.

DERP DERP, WHY WOULD ANYONE WANT THIS OVER THE iPhone?!?
I'M STEPHANIE JOBS AND I AM A RETARD!
Anyways, I am hoping the price goes down on gaming laptops, at this point, its much better just to buy a desktop
h0rk @ Jun 20th 2008 12:00AM
it has ALWAYS been better to buy a desktop. they are always faster and cheaper than gaming laptops. thats the price you pay for portability.
KEROLiUKAS @ Jun 19th 2008 11:55PM
Gaming laptops make no sense..They are too big/heavy to carry around, and if it's just going to be in 1 place, then get a desktop..
John @ Jun 20th 2008 12:07AM
You apparently have not been to a lan party. People with gaming laptops have it made. Everyone else carries around a tower and a monitor, and you just sit down, open it up, and look around smugly. I don't, since i'm too poor to blow that kind of money on a gaming laptop, but damn I hate those smug bastards.
f14tomdog2 @ Jun 20th 2008 12:08AM
Not really, I have a mx15, and its not too heavy, i don't mind carrying it daily, and the performance is great in my opinion.
KEROLiUKAS @ Jun 20th 2008 12:09AM
Give me a laptop that can beat a desktop setup for a gaming lan party..
mmjustlookin @ Jun 20th 2008 12:28AM
a survey carried out for ibm 2 months ago that i worked on revealed that out of 1387 respondents
564 scored 8+ positive the the statement and its follow up
"my laptop isnt in the portable class"
"i purchased it so that when i do have to take it with me somewhere im not inconvenienced"
How often did you actually move your laptop this year?
"once ot twice" 684 agreed that this was the most appropriate answer.
Friends of mine at uni bought laptops and always used my pc to game but bought theirs because they went back home 3 times during the year and didnt want to bother packing it away and carrying it. Most people will buy a laptop for reasons like this...

Portables such as these are considered "desktop replacement" computers. "Laptop" is a misnomer. They aren't made for ultimate portability or ultimate performance. They're intended to serve a demand for very high performance and portability in a package which balances both well.
Nicolas @ Jun 20th 2008 2:47AM
You obviously don't understand the advantages of a laptop. And yes, with these laptops, you will probably have better specs than most people's desktop at LANs.

Wow, a Gulliver's Travels reference. . . wow.
raging_hamsterx @ Jun 20th 2008 12:41AM
I thought it was funny... the king wasn't interested in the laptop. He didn't understand its purpose.
f14tomdog2 @ Jun 20th 2008 12:15AM
Are u serious, my laptop smashes on plenty of desktops including my own, now if u mean the best desktop out, of course not, its a laptop, its smaller, lighter, and more portable, thats the tradeoff, but to say that laptops suck in general, and that they cant beat any desktops, couldn't be more wrong. look at the laptop that is being displayed, 8800gtxm sli, dual core 2.8, 4gb of ram, that can demolish a majority of desktops
f14tomdog2 @ Jun 20th 2008 12:22AM
that is to KEROLiUKAS' comment bout show me a laptop
poematik14 @ Jun 20th 2008 12:49AM
How much is this thing? Like 4 grand?
Neeraj @ Jun 20th 2008 1:01AM
Two things.
1. "So huge!" > That's what she said!
2. What's the actual thickness of this thing? 2"?
darkhorse @ Jun 20th 2008 1:14AM
thats what she said
Neeraj @ Jun 20th 2008 1:47AM
LMAO, nice.
Mohammad @ Jun 20th 2008 1:04AM
That's a big-a** laptop!
Brook @ Jun 20th 2008 2:08AM
this is really no surprise.. i got one of the first M7700s, which was like one of the few 17in laptops out at the time and it was massive. first with dual HDD, and dual DVD roms so i could only imagine how this is...but the people that say laptops are crap for gaming.. my laptop can still play games today that i put on it, granted not top quality its only got a 6800, hell my desktop with 8800 still cant but its not bad...there a great option and a great replacement for a desktop if your a college student. granted you are almost tethered to the wall no matter what a battery in these things is pretty much useless
gabe @ Jun 20th 2008 1:42AM
"is that a Alienware m17x laptop in your pocket or are you happy to see me?
Abuzar @ Jun 20th 2008 2:46AM
I'm just happy to see the Alienware m17x.
crystalsinger @ Jun 20th 2008 2:59AM

Paradox @ Jun 20th 2008 6:33AM

naz @ Jun 20th 2008 6:35AM

Alienware laptops are a joke. I bought a top of the line area m-51 or whatever it was called a couple of years ago. I got a fancy silver case to carry it in and still felt like a complete tard carrying it through the airport. Nothing like having your legs fall asleep when sitting in Vegas. Battery life is about an hour tops and the fact that you can set it up and work off power whenever you get somewhere does not make this worthwhile. Their award winning support is a joke too because if something goes wrong they pretty much make you try to fix it in every way possible until they'll give you a Return number to send that pile of doo doo back.
I sent my "laptop" back 3 times and ended up buying something else because I was so frustrated.
If you value your sanity, don't ever by an Alienware laptop.
Nicolas @ Jun 20th 2008 1:08PM
I've have one, never had a problem. Before buying a laptop why don't you actually research a bit? You're complaining about battery life you could have known this before you bought the laptop if you researched. It's a gaming laptop FFS, they're not really meant to have substantial battery life! You also didn't have to use that fancy silver case.

sure laptops are okay for performance wise, but they are not easy enough to upgrade. If you are a gamer you need to consistently be upgrading your machine or you'll fall behind. If i was a serious gamer, I would most certainly not buy a laptop. I don't go to a lot of lan parties, but if I did that might change my opinion. Having a laptop that can play games is really not good for productivity if you use your laptop for real life work. For the 3/4 of the year that I relocate my laptop 3+ times a day around campus its absolutely necessary. If my laptop played games at a really enjoyable performance level I would get seriously distracted from schoolwork in the library, or worse in a class or meeting. Unless you go to a a lot of gaming parties, keep the "fun" computer at home and save money. Buy a cheap laptop for the road. I know there are advantages to portability, but I think the disadvantages are greater. Then again, if you have the money buy both...
