Ubuntu's Hardy Heron released for MIDs

Earlier this month we saw open-source Ubuntu remixed for netbook-class ultra-portable laptops. Today, MIDs are feeling the hot, sweaty breath of Hardy Heron breathing down the back of their Intel chipsets. The UME-8.04 release features a Gecko-based browser with screen zooming optimized for smaller displays, Pidgin for instant messaging, GNOME's Cheese webcam app, Claws Mail eMail, and Moblin Media for music and video -- all optimized for current and last generation MID / UMPC chipsets from Intel. Available to download now for McCaslin (e.g., Samsung Q1 Ultra) and Menlow-based (Lenovo's Ideapad U8) MIDs.

Looks quite good - nice clean UI!
ChrisMizzleInfo @ Jun 25th 2008 12:41PM
I agree that display is really stunning. Very simple and clear.
LOVE IT!
Now if i could only find a reason to buy a UMPC i'd be set...

Notice how the first ubuntu realize not to feature the feces brown is the first that looks good.
heres a link for those without propeller: http://www.ubuntu.com/products/mobile
CosterMonger @ Jun 25th 2008 9:47AM
it's not like you have to patch ubuntu to change your theme or colors for that matter.
but yes the brown is quite ugly.

Is there a built in console and tar.gz support/any other archival format?
Steve Paine @ Jun 25th 2008 10:46AM
Yes. Xterm is available. Repositories are pre-configured.
Mike Cerm @ Jun 25th 2008 5:26AM
I couldn't find a download link anywhere on Ubuntu.com, but the original article did provide one.

Thanks Mike! I was looking all over for a download link!
This would make a brilliant carputer!
Atanas Boev @ Jun 25th 2008 5:36AM
Now, can I have this on N810?
Abhinav @ Jun 25th 2008 6:16AM
Maemo's pretty good... but i guess you could figure a way to put this on the N810
allislost @ Jun 25th 2008 5:36AM
I was looking at this through my vista laptop and at first I couldn't think of why that UI looked so damn good... then it hit me!
The taskbar is on top of the screen, not on the bottom like in my laptop. So I changed it.
There... that's it...
BigBloke @ Jun 25th 2008 6:29AM
So you were changing Vista to look like Ubuntu?
Your actions have been recorded and sent to the control centre in Redmond. Your Vista activation will shortly be withdrawn...
virain @ Jun 25th 2008 5:57AM
Ye, Will this Hairy HardOn work with Via or ARM?
Neeko @ Jun 25th 2008 6:32AM
Could i install this on my 3yr old 10' sony Vaio? Goodbye windows XP.
Neeko @ Jun 25th 2008 6:47AM
Can i install this on my 3yr old sony Vaio?
Aaronage @ Jun 25th 2008 7:03AM
Yup :)
Atanas Boev @ Jun 25th 2008 7:03AM
The 10' one you mean?
K Nang @ Jun 25th 2008 7:09AM
when will HH work on a ps3??
Christian Walters @ Jun 25th 2008 7:19AM
prolly never, seeing as they have dropped support for the PowerPC processor architecture.
Tech^Cellfish @ Jun 25th 2008 8:31AM
http://psubuntu.com/2008/04/25/no-psubuntu-hardy-yet/
randomuser1256 @ Jun 25th 2008 8:40AM
PS3 doesn't run on PowerPC architecture.... teh 360 does. It uses it's own Cell architecture
Is gonna be unlikely because as Yellow Dog ain't free [so I know so far... feel free to correct] so they can buy teh architecture of Sony
Ubuntu would have to redevelop teh WHOLE OS just for a processor that only one piece of hardware can rrun it... so is reeeeeal unlikely
CosterMonger @ Jun 25th 2008 9:54AM
@randomuser1256
you can still pay if you want to.

NeoDarkSaver @ Jun 25th 2008 11:21AM
Hardy Heron support is dropped from the dev team, because of a show stopper bug. They/We are aiming to release the 8.10 II version when the bug is fixed.
Mic2000 @ Jun 25th 2008 7:16AM
Does this work on an mobile device, HTC touch diamond?
Christian Walters @ Jun 25th 2008 7:45AM
no, this is more or less for UMPCs that run on an Intel Processor, the Touch Diamond is a Windows CE device, completely different. There IS however Linux in development for WinMo devices, and its pretty usuable already, google for LinuxCE and you should find it.
AngryPenguin @ Jun 25th 2008 8:07AM
LinuxCE is dead, see link.
http://web.tampabay.rr.com/ccurzio/
Christian Walters @ Jun 25th 2008 3:15PM
wrong you are, LinuxCE may be dead, but Linux FOR Windows CE is very well alive, it just depends on what kind of device you have.
bob e @ Jun 25th 2008 7:27AM
Very Vista inspired - i like it~
RC @ Jun 25th 2008 8:58AM
For some reason, that comment on a linux thread got you low ranked. Odd. It does look Vista-y though.
CosterMonger @ Jun 25th 2008 10:00AM
which part?
NG @ Jun 25th 2008 7:29AM
I have a Asus R2H, vista is just too slow on it, but then i like the origami bit...
would that ubuntu work on my machine?
I prefer ubuntu over vista
Yamil @ Jun 25th 2008 8:02AM
Will this work with my Asus eeePc 4G? Does anyone know how much disk it needs installed?
HsuGotaQ @ Jun 25th 2008 8:31AM
Got it running on my eeePC 701. Simply apt-get the ubuntu-mobile package to install the new interface (hildon-desktop).
$ sudo apt-get install ubuntu-mobile
Jimmy Jones @ Jun 25th 2008 9:38AM
would this overlay the interface on a regular Ubuntu desktop version? I know it's for UMPC but would the install of the interface work on a desktop version?
john @ Jun 25th 2008 8:44AM
Does it take big amounts of storage?
People say Windows is bloated, but my smallest Ubuntu install was around 2 gigs while my smallest XP install was a quarter of that
Steve Paine @ Jun 25th 2008 10:47AM
Its about 0.75GB install.
Memory footprint is around 500MB
Steve Paine @ Jun 25th 2008 10:54AM
People need to remember that this is for developers, not end users.
There are lots of bugs still in it and many of the UI features need to be cleared up. Media apps are very lightweight and even things like standby don't work on my Q1 Ultra and power-drain and memory footprint is more than with XP
The hardware build is only for Intel with device drivers built for Atom/Poulsbo and the 945 chipset. Many of the hardware support features were only tested on Q1 ultra.
As a developers edition, its fine and a good starting point for building a tailored Atom-optimised distro but don't expect this to be an install-and-go linux OS.

jackflash @ Jun 25th 2008 11:02AM
Very nice.
NeoDarkSaver @ Jun 25th 2008 11:19AM
I dont think this is a beta or alpha, it's listed at cdimage under release.
Ryan Beesley @ Jun 25th 2008 7:40PM
Is something new? I tried to install this on my Samsung Q1P the other day and couldn't get it to boot. The process is fairly involved, and as was pointed out, this isn't ready for general use yet.
Matt @ Jun 27th 2008 12:26PM
I'm confused. That page that is linked to by the 'read' link has been around in various shapes or form for the past several months. All they've done is changed the name and added a few more details at the top.
It would've been far more helpful to link to the wiki page..
