Xbox 360 price dropping to $299.99 on July 6?
What's this? Could it be? An Xbox 360 price drop on July 6? According to this image, the Xbox 360 Pro will drop to $299.99, at least at K-Mart. The little image circulating shows the "Xbox 360 20GB console" with a $299.99 price, but no word on pricing on the Arcade and Elite versions of the console. We had a feeling price cuts would be coming at E3, but it's entirely possible Microsoft waned to get pricing out of the way before the gaming conference to concentrate on other goodness.

JimReaper @ Jun 26th 2008 7:32PM
I was just about to post those exact sentiments!

Gus @ Jun 26th 2008 9:16PM
Unlikely as sony just posted a $3 billion loss directly attributed to the PS3.

If only Microsoft could go the Apple route and give early adopters (at least those who paid $349) some type of reimbursement.
Michael @ Jun 26th 2008 7:29PM
Thats a great idea. I would not mind sending microsoft some information on my purchase and get a rebate check or something. That would be nice but I doubt it will happen.
Ravi @ Jun 26th 2008 7:33PM
Why? It's been nearly a year since the $349 price point was initiated. iPhone's original price only lasted a couple months.
tagaiz @ Jun 26th 2008 7:39PM
Why would they do that. They've had that model out for years so why would you consider yourself early adopters. Do you think you should be reimbursed every time somethings price drops.
BK @ Jun 26th 2008 8:12PM
YEAH!!
I'm still waiting to hear back about my 2006 car purchase! Can you believe they came out with a 2007 and 2008 model?
Hold your breath until I say stop.

The Dude @ Jun 26th 2008 8:23PM
That makes no sense. Price drops occur to move sales, yeah, but it's helped by the falling price of production and components.
Apple reimbursed early adopters because it was a dick-ass move to drop the price after only a couple of months. Meaning, they probably could've afforded to sell the iPhone at the lower price to begin with. Production costs don't fall that much in two months and I doubt they were selling at a loss when they did.
Michael @ Jun 26th 2008 7:27PM
Nice Job Engadget. I submitted this and with-in 5 minutes the story was on the hompage. Thats breaking news!

I'M Spartacus!
jared @ Jun 26th 2008 7:28PM
That must mean they're going to announce something really big at E3 if they're dropping price a week beforehand.
Nuggets @ Jun 26th 2008 7:33PM
BluRay damnit!
Todd @ Jun 26th 2008 7:31PM
that the RROD has dropped to 30% instead of 33%.
JimReaper @ Jun 26th 2008 7:33PM
Hahahahaha
Oh Todd you're so absolutely hilarious. Did you know that?
iPriest @ Jun 26th 2008 7:40PM
You mean "Todd it's 100% not 33%"
Todd @ Jun 26th 2008 7:28PM
Hopefully sony drops the price on the ps3 soon to so i can buy one.
Boarderwoot @ Jun 26th 2008 7:37PM
Comedy central just had a commercial for GTA for xbox starting at $279.99 us
Joshua Walters @ Jun 26th 2008 8:11PM
Havent you heard of the 360 Arcade? Or Core?
Real men are judged by the size of their hard drive, and neither of those systems will do.
charlie @ Jun 26th 2008 7:38PM
My bet it that they use the lower price to clear out, and then they upgrade the hdd on the base model (currently 20GB) to 40GB or 60GB. At the same $299 price. It positions them to compete somewhat with PS3 hardware which is currently a MUCH better deal and fits better with their plan of delivering digital content through the xbox.
Todd @ Jun 26th 2008 7:43PM
you might be right. that and probably a smaller chip design.
parvindkumar @ Jun 26th 2008 8:21PM
You might be right, I saw a deal on recertified version this system for $199 at http://www.deals2buy.com/show/49508177/deals.htm
Darth Abe @ Jun 26th 2008 8:22PM
Its not a better deal if you're buying it to play games.
chefgon_ign @ Jun 27th 2008 7:11AM
The PS3 may have some sophisticated hardware in it, but being an owner of both, I definitely feel like the 360 was a bargain while I feel a bit ripped off with the PS3.
I have definitely gotten my $400 worth of enjoyment out of the 360 many times over, whereas I'm still waiting for something to make my $500 PS3 purchase seem justified.
grull27 @ Jun 26th 2008 7:40PM
I'm ok with my Xbox 360 Elite.
Thi mam(kris120890) @ Jun 26th 2008 7:48PM
I was just about to say woohoo but soon realised the US is getting the price drop we brits got earlier this year.
grull27 @ Jun 26th 2008 7:49PM
So you said Woohoo earlier in the year? :-/
Thi mam(kris120890) @ Jun 26th 2008 8:01PM
Yes but i thought that if the price drops may be around the world, that means it's cheaper to pick up a new 360 considering the spate of suicidal 360's. Although I've had two 360's and none of them have broken.
deyanimay @ Jun 26th 2008 8:20PM
wtf do you need 3 for?
Tejas @ Jun 26th 2008 10:22PM

He likes to play with himself... pun intended...
bo sneb @ Jun 26th 2008 7:48PM
now all they need to do is drop the price of their hard drives, especially if they plan on pushing downloadable HD films instead of optical media
LC @ Jun 26th 2008 7:48PM
And my 360 Elite is now officially on Craigslist. :P
grull27 @ Jun 26th 2008 7:49PM
Why?! :(
ojx @ Jun 26th 2008 8:01PM
i saw an xbox premium at 299.99 over at sharper image at the mall, but that's only because of the store was closing for good
deyanimay @ Jun 26th 2008 8:29PM
i saw one at buy.com for $199.99 but thats only because it was refurbished.
Alex @ Jun 26th 2008 8:16PM
I would say this is a much needed price drop.
MRCUR @ Jun 26th 2008 8:17PM
I've heard from someone I would deem a reliable source that all of the 360s will be dropping by $50 before or at E3. So I guess the Pro gets the drop before the other consoles...
eobiont @ Jun 26th 2008 9:16PM
This is a similar price as the $50 rebates places like BB, Target, Amazon were doing the last couple of weeks when you bought XBOX + GTA IV. Same price actually except it came with strings attached (cash > gift card, required GTA IV purchase)
ED @ Jun 26th 2008 9:23PM
Microsoft waned, eh?
Jomolungma @ Jun 26th 2008 9:53PM
If all 360s drop by $50, then the Arcade will actually be cheaper than the Wii. That has to be compelling to someone.
jamesdr1968 @ Jun 26th 2008 10:04PM
Well, good for Microsoft. Since Sony's losing so much money, why not just drop the price of the PS3 to $299 - the quantity purchased will make up for the price drop, plus they'll have A LOT of blu-ray players in people's homes, which will sell more TVs.... oh wait, I need to buy gas. Maybe not.
The Sound @ Jun 26th 2008 10:07PM
Yes! By then I'll have plenty of money and if this is true, it makes the purchase much easier.
Though I'll probably end up waiting for a model where the new mobo and smaller chips, which will be quieter and have better reliability.
Chris @ Jun 26th 2008 10:22PM
I just want to be able to get the 120gb HDD for around $100!
Torstar @ Jun 26th 2008 10:28PM
damn I'll buy me a second one now...
Ridgecity @ Jun 26th 2008 10:33PM
Considering how old the hardware is, think it would be a perfect time to drop it to $250, which is the mainstream price for consoles. Too bad microsoft says they spend about $80 just on the hard drive... yeah right...
