Nintendo pushes back DVD-playing Wii for Japan, again

While those of us 'round these parts have pretty much given up on the idea of a DVD-playing Wii a long time ago, folks in Japan have had some cause for hope based on promises from the company that such a system was, in fact, headed for the country sooner or later. It seems like they're now about to enter the acceptance phase as well, however, as Nintendo has just announced yet another delay to the system with no word about an eventual release date. According to IGN, Nintendo President Satoru Iwata would only go so far as to say that due continuing worldwide supply constraints on the current Wii, "the priority is on the current model." One thing getting a boost in availability, however, is the Nintendo DS 1Seg TV tuner, which Nintendo says will get a retail release next month after previously only being available online.[Via Joystiq]
They shoulds release an HD-DVD one while they are at it. I kid, i kid. But putting the next gen BD disc would make it last longer....unless BD is not here to stay :)
It doesn't seem necessary for the the Wii to have a DVD drive, it was never marketed as an all in one media center device like the PS3 and Xbox360. The Wii is just a simple, relatively cheap gaming machine.
Dude, it does have a DVD drive. Where do you think the games go when you put them in the slot?
I don't think the Wii needs a DVD player.
I don't think it'll make a difference, seeing as the whole world has a freaking Wii.
I mean, I don't think Nintendo is concentrating on more Wii buyers.
This update would simply prolong the mind-control Nintendo has on current owners.

Ill take my 20 dollar US equiv. DVD player I snagged in NYC Chinatown that plays more than the Wii ever will lolz. Region free and up converting. The Wii is supposed to be about innovation, not watching movies...
Well if its that damn serious just get some Linux on there or have someone put it on for you, I got the DVD unlocked on mine, but next to my HD DVD & Blu Ray collections does DVD matter? Wha wha wha you know how people are
I dont know about you guys but I dont put dvd's in any of my consoles. Why put extra miles on 'em when I have a perfectly working sony dvd/cd/mp3 surround sound thingy. Especially the 360, dont need another RROD!
Did anyone really expect this to come out?
Why is it so hard to put a DVD player on the Wii, PS3 has a Blu Ray already geez.
