Okay, so we've got
hard evidence the Wind is shipping out somewhere in the world, but the latest status check on Amazon reveals that it'll be
another 3 to 5 weeks before Americans can indulge. Granted, we've seen these dates slip around a bit, so hopefully it'll slide to "sooner" if anything. Interestingly enough, the Advent 4211 rebadge is shipping this very moment to customers in the UK for £279.99, though that currency conversion is apt to be a real thorn in your side when looking to import.

What's with the OS X desktop?
Schfelzerberg @ Jul 2nd 2008 9:42AM
Same here. But I'd have to agree, OS X on the MSI Wind would look neat.

I was thinking the same thing, what up with the OSX background.

The Mac backgrounds have been used by PC World (a uk computer chain) for ages :) PC World brand and sell advents over here in the UK :)

lowbot @ Jul 2nd 2008 3:11PM
Id be more wow'd if these things had pcmcia slots. All my cards are not express cards and I think I've seen two express cards in the wild. Id prefer the legacy card slot option.

What is so popular about these mini laptops? Not bashing them, but man, post after post on them. Just wondering.

Cheap, lightweight, designed for web surfing and not hardcore gaming/productivity, oh, and they're cheap.
A lot of these are also coming out with "Instant On" OSes as well, for those, "Oh man, what was the name of that guy in that movie again?" moments.
Personally, I'm looking forward to Dell's Mini Inspiron.

Blaine Oliver @ Jul 2nd 2008 9:49AM
Advent are known for being cheap, but is it literally the same machine but rebranded or is it a copy?
Rick @ Jul 2nd 2008 9:52AM
The UK price includes the 17.5% VAT. If you happened to be in the UK and were hot for one that comes to about $560. Amazon has the 3-cell for $499 plus free super saver shipping. The UK price without the VAT is about £238 or $476.
Rick @ Jul 2nd 2008 9:54AM
I'm not sure about the UK but in the EU (France, Germany, Italy, Spain, etc.,) if you buy it there you apply for a refund of the VAT if you are taking it home to the US by filling out the proper form and tuning it into Customs before departing for home.
EvilEuropean @ Jul 3rd 2008 3:15AM
Err. the UK is IN the EU (regardless of what the right-wing media say!).

Slightly better page for the Advent rebadge.

Availabile to collect now from my local store and at £280 I'm almost tempted...but I expect I'd goof the unboxing video ;)

I was also surprised to see one of our national brands (in Portugal) offer a very similar sub-notebook. After a little digging, it is in fact the smaller MSI Wind (with the 8.9" LCD)
http://abertoatedemadrugada.com/2008/07/tsunami-traveller-wind-remarcado.html
Available in the next few days for 399 Eur.
(Acer Aspire One will also be available soon for a much more interesting 299 Eur.)

After holding it in for as long as possible, MSI finally breaks Wind.....

Why is it when I reply to a comment it does not show up after I submit? I have always refresh twice? is it firefox 3?
MRCUR @ Jul 2nd 2008 11:06AM
Nope, it's Engadget. I'm using IE7 right now and it does the same thing.
kal326 @ Jul 2nd 2008 11:16AM
Nope, IE7 has been acting up in the same way for the last few days. Today appears to be working ok though. Probably a new feature of the wonderful Engadget comment system, like the lack of an edit or delete button.
AndyH @ Jul 2nd 2008 10:34AM
It's not a clone of the MSI wind - look at the keyboard (the rather small enter key)
nVening @ Jul 2nd 2008 11:02AM
If you look at the actual product pics here http://forums.msiwind.net/general-discussion/msi-wind-rebadged-the-t707.html then it does have the proper sized keyboard, not sure what image engadget have up there ??
netbookmag @ Jul 3rd 2008 6:54AM
It's defo a rebranded wind.
MSI sticker underneath the unit.
I've took a bunch of pics, one of them being a close up of the enter key if you want to see it closer up.

I noticed yesterday that the MSI Wind is out on Amazon.com. Unfortunately it's only the three cell version, and it also ships in 3 to 5 weeks. And the 3 cell is labeled as $499.99. I was hoping that the six cell would be that cheap. Oh well, still looking forward to the Dell E's release.

Ben L @ Jul 2nd 2008 11:26AM
ermm...last I checked, MSI said July 7. I'm not sure an Amazon ship estimate is the best source for availability of a new product.
footballencarta @ Jul 2nd 2008 11:58AM
Morgan Computers here in the UK seem to have the Wind in stock at the moment.
Dunno why they're charging £100 more than the advent though :S

*yawn* wake me up when they ship the 6 cell version in the usa. I'm sick of waiting for it, maybe it will ship before 2009

Now if they can make all silver with the keys the same color then they maybe on to something

Hi,
I've just picked up one of the Advents today. All I can say is that it is in a different league to the eee 701 4g. It feels much faster (eee had 2gb ram on xp pro). The biggest improvement is in the temperature it runs at. I've been through the battery twice and it's only warm.
It's a proper little laptop whereas the eee was always like a toy. Keyboard is really usable and the screen seems good so far (no direct sunlight yet)
