If you've been tearing your hair out, pacing wildly around the room, and sweating bullets over the availability of the
ASUS Eee PC 1000 (and we know you have), you'll be pleased to know that the grown-up sized version of the company's mini-laptop is now available for pre-order on Amazon. The site doesn't provide specific release dates for the systems (the $699.99, 40GB SSD equipped 1000, and the $649.99, 80GB HDD equipped 1000H), though we're figuring it can't be too long till these models hit shipping centers. In the meantime, we recommend going for long jogs.

So, are they going to release a revamped version of the original eee? I'd like the 7" screen, an atom processor, and 4-8 GB of upgradeable harddrive space and 512 MB of upgradeable memory.
Yes, these are low expectations, but ...
I WANT IT AT $199!!!!
Flashpoint @ Jul 13th 2008 7:34PM
With a 40 GB SSD, they've managed to finally address every issue I had with the original Eee PC running XP.
4-8 GB SSD wasn't enough. I would have settled for 20 and a $500 price tag
I need a new throwaway laptop for downloading from P2P websites so I can keep my porn, my stolen MP3's and my harsh political commentary mobile and easily destroyable in case the FEDS come for me.
(BTW - since I wijack, every unsecured public WiFi without a pattern, and during night they'll never get me)
mabhatter @ Jul 13th 2008 7:51PM
at these prices just by a cheap Compaq or Evernex core solo based 14" laptop for $399!! Then you get real ram, real hard drive space to upgrade, real sized keyboard.... I can buy a nice Dell 14" dual core pentium, 250 Gb hard drive and 3GB memory for $699.
Steffen Jobbs @ Jul 13th 2008 8:13PM
What's with Asus and the EeePC? Do they come out with a new model every two months? Not a complaint. It really does seem they have introduced a few models this year already. I didn't care much for them at first, but they do seem practical for this economy.
kccboy2004 @ Jul 13th 2008 8:55PM
Hold on one sec. Letss do some mathematics:
SSD @ 40GB = $300
RAM @ 1GB = $50
Screen = $150 ??
XP/Vista = $100
Power supply = $50
Case = $50
Keyboard = $50
+ Manufacturer Warranty = $75
==$775
That is without
1. Miniturisation costs
2. overall profit (retail / distribution)
Please don't talk about mainstream laptops. If you must, please compare this to a Sony TZ or a Dell 420. You CANNOT compare this to a mainstream laptop. They are not the same; the components are not proudced in the same volumes (or have not in the past).
If you must complain, then wait till this time next year. In fact, wait anyway.
Hung @ Jul 13th 2008 9:06PM
Well, I just need a laptop to bring to class for notes and powerpoints, as well as basic web-browsing and the occasional starcraft during class.
I already spent $730 on the build below and just want the cheapest thing with a screen, WIFI card, full keyboard, and processor that I can lug around. Can really afford too much more since I'm a poor BME student :(

^Pull more figures out of your ass please.
$50 for ram, keyboard,psu and case? Last time i checked i could get 2 gigs for $50. The keyboard and case cost $15~ to manufacture tops.
I agree that these machines are not like normal machines, but please don't try to justify them by those means.
Andrew @ Jul 13th 2008 9:24PM
@kccboy2004
Not sure where the $300 pricetag comes from for the "SSD"... But 32GB USB drives are going for $85 from what I've seen. You won't even see close to the 60-90MB/sec performance that you see on highend SSDs. The "SSDs" included on the EEEs aren't true SSDs.
But yes, you can't compare these to mainstream laptops at all... If you do, you must compare them to the high end Fujitsus, HPs, Sonys, and Panasonics...
chop @ Jul 13th 2008 9:52PM

are you serious? where are you getting these prices...a keyboard and case costs no more than 10bucks to manufacture. hell i got 4 replacement keyboards from my dell laptop for free and they go on ebay for 10bucks. its already been stated that xp licenses for these netbooks go for 30bucks. also warranties dont add onto the cost, yes they have an estimated warranties payable on their balance sheets, but you cant add a warranty to the cost of the retail product. id go as far and say these things prolly cost 200bucks or less to make.
Wolfticket @ Jul 13th 2008 11:53PM
EEE = Under 1kg and size of average hard back book.
Budget Laptop = Around 3kg+ and size of large atlas-type book.
If that isn't the whole point of the EEE (and netbooks in general), it's at least a bitesized nugget of the point.
Oinquer @ Jul 16th 2008 7:18AM
SSD @ 40GB = $300 LOL!
SSD @ 40GB (which probably 32GB +8GB) = 150$ + 25$
RAM @ 1GB = $50 im peeing from laughing so hard!!
RAM @ 1GB = $25
Screen = $150 ??
dont really know the screen..but lets put that $150
XP/Vista = $100 ....
XP = $30
Power supply = $50 are out of your mind?
Power Supply = $39 bucks tops
Case = $50 i can buy tower cases for 20 bucks or less...
Case = $30 tops
Keyboard = $50 HAHAH gotta be crazy
Keyboard = $15 max...
+ Manufacturer Warranty = $75 this it is included in each piece not to the whole...
+ Manufacturer Warranty = $0
==$464
Most stuff got from Amazon...this is while the manufacturer making his profit already.....now..tell the truth...youre from the ASUS right?

$700?! I must be really behind the news or the Eee is costing a whole lot more than it should (and used to)... holy crap Asus!

Asus hater !
Skazer @ Jul 13th 2008 9:04PM
Don't like it? Then you should've bought a 2/4G then. It's like all you tools want decent specs, a perfect keyboard, a perfect touchpad, a perfect screen size, 6-cell battery, etc for $199. Get a grip already. Not many people want a cramped keyboard, small screen, and 3-cell battery even for $199- the market isn't there and the manufactueres know it.
Biomech @ Jul 13th 2008 9:49PM
Dude all I said was that it costs a lot more than it used to, when did I say "OMG IT SUCKS I HATE ASUS"?
Maybe you should "get a grip".
Skazer @ Jul 15th 2008 10:04AM
No, you said it costs more than it should.

Josh Bradshaw @ Jul 13th 2008 7:32PM
They have tricked us! Start by bringing in a very cheap laptop that everyone can afford and slowly raise the price... $700 is heaps for a little laptop, I refuse to pay it!

Asus has fucking lost it. $650 to $700!?
The only reason I can think of them raising the prices on each newer model is so the early adoptors don't feel as burned. Just a silly theory.
The competition is here and its going to eat you alive Asus with the way your going!!!
digitallysick @ Jul 13th 2008 7:39PM
thats a bit expensive how about regular 80gb hd and knock off 200 dollars?
Sam @ Jul 13th 2008 7:43PM
My god, the screen size, the hard drive, and the price keep going up. One more step and I think it'll be an actual laptop instead of a subnotebook.

Duckman (the funny as hell cartoon from 1994) is being released on DVD on Sep 16th and it is on Amazon for pre-ordering too.
Yeah, that's how excited I am about the friggin EEEPC 1000!!!! Where's Dell's E and E Slim?
Tired_ @ Jul 13th 2008 8:10PM
Has there been a teardown yet for the SSD model? I'm very interested to see if it uses a standard 32GB SATA SSD...something I could take out and sell for a couple hundred bucks to pay for one of those new 500GB platter drives. Unless the design is very different from the 1000H, there's no room for one of their SSD-on-a-miniPCIE-stick thingies.
TareX @ Jul 13th 2008 8:12PM
Too big.
Too expensive.
This one lost the entire point of the Eee PC. They just entered the laptop territory.
The 901 seemed pretty excellent to me.
dc @ Jul 13th 2008 8:13PM
I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks this is too expensive.
What happened to the sub $400 sub notebook? With these things you might as well get a 13-14" for the same price or a couple hundred more, larger screen, slightly heavier, much better processor and keyboard and easier to upgrade RAM and harddrive that does not void your warranty.
Just the warranty thing... if upgrading RAM or the harddrive is going to void the warranty I expect the machine to be disposable (read: very cheap).
I'm waiting for the MSI Wind to become available. Seems that reviews of the MSI compare it favorably to the new eeePCs.
kccboy2004 @ Jul 13th 2008 8:36PM
dc.
Mate, $399 is what an Asus 900 costs. Buy one of those.
Delpheno @ Jul 13th 2008 8:17PM
Too expensive for a subnotebook. You could just get an Xbox 360 and still buy a few games.
Rome @ Jul 13th 2008 8:25PM
I have been waiting or a compact Laptop(ish) but 900 was a bit to small for me. And after seeing this (a week ago) I have settled on MSI Wind, same secs, not as good looking, $479 praise tag. Also I'm thinking of upgrading HD to 320 GB $130-$150. 10 inch Laptop with same specs (except smaller battery) and 320 GB hard dive for $50 less than Eee 1000 seems like no-brainer to me.
Onetrack @ Jul 13th 2008 8:55PM
I'm with you.. aside from the ssd this is the same as the wind, and a load more expensive.
Asus, you totally missed the boat.. you never release 20 different versions of the same laptop - can't be done.
MS tried this with vista and released what.. 7 different versions? Not what consumers want
Skazer @ Jul 13th 2008 9:32PM
The battery is a different size too Onetrack. They have a $650 version if you don't want SSD, but want a 6-cell battery, which I don't think the wind has for $480. So really, in reality, the Asus eee has about double the battery life for about $100-150 more (most places have the Wind for $500-600), which is what Acer is charging for the 6-cell battery for the Aspire One. If you don't care about battery life, then yes, the Wind is a much better deal. But if you DO want a 6-cell, they're essentially going to be around the same price most likely.
Alex @ Jul 13th 2008 8:58PM
Why does Amazon always do this?
Travis @ Jul 13th 2008 9:12PM
Not news. They have been available for preorder for some time.

Skazer @ Jul 13th 2008 9:25PM
Alright, you damn fools. Yes, all of you who are complaining about how it's too expensive, too big, too well-speced and how it's missing "the point" of the original Eee PC. DON'T BUY IT THEN. You can buy the older, smaller, cheaper versions you smucks. It's not like they're shoving this one down your throat. Obviously, if the 7" laptop was for anything larger than a tiny niche market that can't turn a profit, manufacturers would still be jumping all over it. But they don't. None of them do.
To the numbskull that asked why they keep raising the price? Because it has better specs now. Some people want this. Some people don't.
For those saying how the MSI WInd is so much cheaper: They're just about the same price now. It's $650 for the Asus Eee with the 80GB HD, so they're identically spec'ed and priced except I don't know if it's $650 for the 6-cell wind or the 3-cell. Some sites have the Wind for $500, but it's the 3-cell. Where's the MSI Wind with the 6-cell battery? It sure isn't in Canada. I don't know what the situation is like in the USA, but it's MIA in Canada and the 6-cell... well it's probably somewhere on Mars and costs $100-$150 more- which is, oh, the same price as the Asus Eee.
Is it in laptop territory yet? NO. A 13" laptop is not the fricking same as a 10" laptop. Did all of you already forget how expensive Sony 11" laptops are?
And why on earth would you need to upgrade the HD and RAM? Is 80GB not enough for a secondary laptop? Is 1GB RAM not enough for WIndows XP?
I can't believe I wrote such a long comment. I can't believe there were so many irrational comments to reply to. Grr!
chop @ Jul 13th 2008 10:03PM
msi wind is 499 for the xp model with a 6 cell battery, but due to battery shortages and consumers breathing down msi's necks, they decided to ship them out with 3 cell batteries and cut the price down 20bucks. msi says the 6 cell will be available in september for the same 499 it was originally intended to be, so no the wind and the eee1000 are not the same price, the eee1000 is 150-200 dollars more and has a tacky design with its use of chrome.
1gb ram isnt that great anymore, hell firefox3 alone uses around 300mb of memory after some fair usage, applications are far more memory intensive nowadays.
Skazer @ Jul 13th 2008 10:12PM
Right. Battery shortages. The end result, which is what matters, is that it's still $500 for a 3-cell, NOT 6-cell, right now. Not in September. Now. Heck, if you wanted to wait 2+ months to get a 10" laptop, then you'd have more choices than the Eee or the Wind. And who's to say that the Eee won't be getting price cuts in September? Hell, I guess it would've been better for Asus to let the price sink to $500, put in a 3-cell instead of a 6-cell, and blame it on battery shortages.
And 1GB RAM for XP is perfectly fine if you're going to be doing word processing, browsing the web, and watching some movies on this thing, which is what most people will be using a 10" laptop for. I don't know why I would even have to argue about this point.
joshua @ Jul 13th 2008 9:39PM
I don't know why everyone is ragging on the price. Have you browsed what it costs for just an SSD of that size? Look around newegg and its $320 or more for 32GB depending on the brand and it costs more than the laptop itself to go up to 64GB.
The only thing you should be comparing this with is other computers with an SSD installed. And the one thats $50 with an normal 80GB hard drive, now thats overpriced.
Andrew @ Jul 14th 2008 9:28AM
Again... It's not a "true" SSD. If you want to compare, 32GB USB disks are going for 85 bucks now (which is basically what this is). SSDs are considered higher quality, with better quality chips to be used for a longer rewrite cycle. SSDs, to everyone in the industry, are still very expensive and not 'pure profit' like you think it is. I don't see Asus taking a loss on these disks...
Martin Kean0 @ Jul 13th 2008 10:13PM
I agree, the wind is a much better deal and the ram is easily upgradable compared to any eeepc, and if you get the 3 cell model now you can get the 6 cell replacment with the money you save and have 2 . . .:-) best of all im writing this on one now OH YEAAAAA . . . . . MSI FTW (well advent 4211)
