Maingear prepping mammoth Centrino 2-based eX-L gaming laptop
For those who won't even glance in the general direction of a gaming laptop unless it weighs in at 12+ pounds, you'll probably be unable to take your retinas off of Maingear's forthcoming beast. Word on the street has it that the aptly-titled eX-L will posses a potent 3.06GHz Core 2 Extreme X9100 CPU, which will predictably be overclocked by an undisclosed amount. Graphically, we're told to expect a couple of ATI GPUs or a single NVIDIA unit, while the 17-inch display, built-in speakers (with subwoofer) and 802.11n WiFi are pretty much par for the course. Pricing and availability details are still being withheld, but it sounds like this one won't be coming your way cheap.

Do the people making these... gross laptops (of which there are about a million under a ton of different brands) really sell enough to offset the cost of producing them?
initialxy @ Jul 16th 2008 1:52PM
maingear smoke, don't breath this!
HAI 2 U @ Jul 16th 2008 1:53PM
what ... vga out? seriously?
dvi or fail.
Matt @ Jul 16th 2008 1:55PM
It has HDMI out.
Steven @ Jul 16th 2008 1:59PM
I knew I saw an HDMI port back there.
ichime @ Jul 16th 2008 2:00PM
This is basically the OCZ 17 inch DIY (which is really an Arima/Flextronics W840Di). This is the first picture of the back of it and good to see the HDMI ports and extra cooling vent compared to its predecessor, the Arima W830 (which the Alienware M9700 and M9750 are based off of)
ichime @ Jul 16th 2008 1:59PM
sry, I meant bigger vents, not extra
Matt @ Jul 16th 2008 2:14PM
Looks a little like the original XPS laptop. Blazing fast machine, but uglier than a Ford Edsel.
Kaiser-Machead @ Jul 16th 2008 2:37PM
As much as I like to badmouth these big ass laptops, having a folding, easier-to-hide computer comes in handy when you have friends that get crunked and walk on the furniture in your apartment.
konshuss @ Jul 16th 2008 3:06PM
hey wait a second. you didn't rag on this laptop for being bigger than a house or whine that it might be too tough to carry or make your lap uncomfortable or other such female complaints ... you actually went the other way and praised it for being every bit as powerful as a desktop but smaller... bravo.
take a note, fanboys. your computer doesn't have to resemble a big cracker to be completely enjoyable.
nanobis @ Jul 16th 2008 2:45PM
doesnt seam bad, like the flames.
but i dont expect it to be cheap.
Prestor John @ Jul 16th 2008 3:18PM
These things need a new name to distinguish them from laptops and notebooks.
I nominate Desktop-with-a-built-in-folding-screen
Kaiser-Machead @ Jul 16th 2008 5:40PM
Fold-desk
kyle.dille @ Jul 16th 2008 5:44PM
Folding@home?
kyle.dille @ Jul 16th 2008 5:51PM
Port-a-Puter maybe?
Elliott @ Jul 16th 2008 6:31PM
This looks badass.
Big Al @ Jul 17th 2008 7:56AM
Any body who walked on my furniture wouldn't be my friend and i'm pretty sure would get their a$$ kicked.
