ASUS continues to mercilessly flog Eee brand with Eee PC 1000HD
ASUS must think that best way to make the Eee PC stand out in the overflowing netbook market is to crank out minor, uninteresting variants of the same models, because otherwise we're at a total loss to explain today's appearance of the Eee PC 1000HD. Yeah, that's the 1000HD, not the 1000H, which we've already seen. Ridiculous. Even more ridiculous is that it's basically the same machine as the Pentium M-based Eee 904, only with the 1000's 10-inch screen. Right. So now not only are there an endless variety of Eee models, the model numbers themselves don't indicate anything logical: the Eee 901 is faster than the 904, which uses the basic case of the 1000 but shares a processor with the 900 and 1000HD -- but not the 1000 or 1000H, which are Atom-based like the 901. Hmm, Easy to learn, Easy to work, Easy to play -- not easy to buy might be your big problem here, ASUS.[Via Mobile Stylus]

Somebody FUCKING FIRE Asus's head of marketing. This went from a brand with a real future to a laughingstock.
Could Engadget or someone make a handy table that gets updated every time that idiot at ASUS decides to come out with another unintelligible eeepc model number?
It's just the usual Asus EeePC of the week. The next model will have a pencil sharpener built-in next to the USB port. It's a very good marketing ploy. Every week they can raise the price up as they add a minor feature. Nothing wrong with milking a fat cow and lightening the wallet of a few suckers.
My avatar would love to own an EeePC. He just waiting until they put a banana holder on the side.
@ Chuckles: Wikipedia has a fairly useful chart, although it's not fully up to date. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/EeePC#Specifications
Asus should hurry up and release a 903: the 901 innards in the 900 case - that would be sweet...
yo, marketing gets the last word.
Sony does the same shite with vaio,A, B, C, Tz, Xy L1, P5 , j3 blah, blah.
They're over doing it a bit now.
What the hell Asus!?
I don't think anyone is going to buy this with its Celeron processor, but if the price is low enough (which it won't).
I want them to release the 901 with an HDD like the Acer Aspire One.
Asus, you started this netbook craze that every other company is getting in on but why are you fucking up so spectacularly!?
wonder what they'll call the one with an HD screen
Duke Nukem Forever
The Asus 1000THD (True HD Reloaded)...or something like that.
would you guys be as annoyed to find out that Dell had several variants of their popular Vostro laptop with different specifications and features? Oh. My. God. They're dragging the Dell name in the dirt!
Intel pentium M? I dont think so
Those promo pictures they provide are all horrific.
Quite an impressive collection of tags for this piece Mr. Patel.
say what you want, but i'm personally waiting for the Eee PC 12x5A PZC.. i hear that one's going to be killer.
701, 901, 904, 1000, 1000h... 100HD what the hell happened to my $200 netbook(laptop, umpc, same b.s.)? dam it!
eee PC 1000HD-BR as in BluRay please, then I'm sold, err...buying.
Why don't they just open a website and allow people to customize the features like a regular notebook? Then they could offer variety without looking like complete idiots announcing new minor models every week.
Honestly, as stupid as this is, I'm actually pretty glad. Asus (only 1 player in the netbook game) is shooting themselves in the foot clearly.. But in the end the consumer WILL benefit. I'm sure it wont be too long until second hand devices hit all over craigslist or what not. More supply = cheaper prices... and Asus is doing just that (even if it's not intentional)
Wow Asus has created a clusterfuck of notebook clones....
Asus has finally stopped me from wanting an Eee PC. Props to Asus' crack marketing team.
I'll take a whack at it, to stop your crying.
900 series = 9" screen.
1000 series = 10" screen.
(ow, my brain)
H = hard drive
D = Dothan processor
(oh no, letters!)
Now, the only thing that doesn't really have a pattern to it is the end of the model numbers. But it's not that hard, really. 900 was the original 9" model which had a Celeron. 901 was the successor that had the Atom processor. And finally, the 904 was a successor (of sorts) to that which was the 9" screen (notice how 900 still means 9" screen?) in a larger frame.
(brain explodey)
1000HD = 10" screen, HDD, Dothan processor. 904HD = 9" screen (in larger frame), HDD, Dothan.
Personally, I think that makes it easier to purchase an item cause I can pick and choose which suffices I want. I don't want an HD or Dothan processor so I'll be avoiding the H and D suffices. What's also funny is that all these different models seem to be direct responses to potential-customer gripes. Common complaints were: screen and keyboard too small, and no HDD. All of those were remedied in one way or another while offering people the ability to choose exactly which one they want. I'm utterly confused as to how more choice equals bad, confusing, watering down, etc.
Please explain the EEE Box, the 700 series, and which ones have Windows and which ones have Lunix? Also, there were the Surf series, all in addition to that you already mentioned...
I think the word you were looking for was suffix, not suffice.
Tony: Sure thing captain. As you probably know the 700 series was the first to arrive and surprisingly the 7 in 700 meant 7" screen. These all had solid state instead of hard drives so there is no H anywhere. Instead they had things like 2G/4G/8G on the end of them to, weirdly enough, denote how much solid state space they had. The newer models still have these markers. For example, there is a 901 20G and 12G. Then there are the Surf models which are basically just cheaper models that have less RAM and no webcam.
jollyllama(awesome name): Sorry, I thought the plural of suffix was suffices (pronounced su-fis-ees) instead of suffixes.
Your ideas intrigue me and I wish to subscribe to your newsletter.
srsly though, you make perfect sense, bot. I agree wholeheartedly.
I still think the ECS G10IL may be a better solution for me than this. I can't wait till it comes out!

they should just let you customize your EEE PC online like many manufactures do.
That would be difficult to set up and organise. It would cost a fortune.
Soon enough I'll need a walk-in closet to store all of the EEE models in.
Everyone wise up the entire Celeron line of processors sucks.
Duh. Intel made it so it would suck; it's their budget line. If you want a better processor, get a Core 2 or even Pentium.
If they made a 32 core pentium 3 on 45nm process node, would it be worth buying?
Sadly, the Atom processor is slower than the Celeron.
Seems like there are far more people wanting EeePCs than there are Atom processors to put in them. Asus must have found a big box of Pentium M's lying around and thought "hey....!"
...Wouldn't it be a lot easier to have a few basic models, just make them customizable (like Dell/Apple/HP)?
Well you could op for the World's Cheapest Laptop.
It has one model (the cheapest one) and instead of 50 varieties, you get 50 clones of the same thing. How convenient for a premium of only $6500?
I "THINK" that the one I am after will be the 904H (linux) since it is meant to be cheaper than the 1000H series, but have basically the same amount of stuff.
All this to get a "perfect" Ebook reader
Isn't this what caused the downfall of Motorola?
*cough*RAZR*cough*
Resident Evil: Code Veronica
COME ON ASUS!!! FAIL 7,8,9,10, 11 incher.
wait a sec, doesn't Asus do this with all of their computer lines? I looked at Asus computers awhile ago and saw a dozen laptop lines, where maybe only 4-6 will do. I found it way too confusing to find a laptop made by Asus and went with Dell instead.
Im so disappointed... Asus why hath thou forsaken me!?
Gawwko,
I think ASUS is crazy.
Well time to revise it AGAIN... seeing how the CPU in the 904 will be the celeron, it looks like I will end up splurging on the 1000H (Xp since linux is half the storage space)
Can we get the:
Eee PC 1000 HD-BR-Ginsu Edition please.
It sucks as a computer, but it slices the hell out of a tomato.
I was actually thinking of getting one of these, but I'll just wait on the new Dell now.
this asus stuff is great ...
here's to more eee products!!!!!!!!
Oh yes, this can only mean that we will soon have a tablet Eee PC 1000T. Or rather a T1000 Eee PC.
