MSI to reportedly build LG's X110 netbook
MSI has been pretty successful with the Wind, wouldn't you say? Yeah, so would LG. Reportedly, LG is hoping to solicit MSI's services in order to craft its own X110 netbook. The mini laptop will purportedly boast an 8.9-inch panel, 120GB hard drive, 2GB of RAM and Windows XP runnin' the show. Interestingly, the price is expected to hover between $625 and $790 as it focuses on "design and material quality" rather than low cost. Anxious to see how that move plays out, aren't you?

2 GB of RAM and a 120 GB hard drive is overkill, especially for such a small laptop running Windows XP.
Ian @ Jul 23rd 2008 9:47AM
I agree. I think a 60gig HD is good, 2gb of ram can never hurt though, esp with what it costs nowadays. An extra $20US?
tyler @ Jul 23rd 2008 10:23AM
I'm sorry, but that little kid on the screen is creepin' me out.
phanbouy @ Jul 23rd 2008 11:51AM
that's called a child, tyler
tyler @ Jul 23rd 2008 12:28PM
ok..
That 'child' is creepy!
phanbouy @ Jul 23rd 2008 12:34PM
no, i mean that's what's known here on earth as "a child"
OneLove @ Jul 23rd 2008 12:35PM
now you are complaining about getting too much?
bartoron @ Jul 23rd 2008 12:59PM
I'm not complaining, I'm just saying that they could replace the 120 GB hard drive with a 60 GB hard drive and replace the 2 GB of RAM with 1 GB of RAM in order to save money. Even with these two downgrades the system will be more than powerful enough to run Windows XP.
OneLove @ Jul 23rd 2008 2:42PM
Are they saying the consumer values "design and material quality" over low cost?
Craig @ Jul 23rd 2008 9:05AM
Sorry...once the initial wave of gadget nuts buy their fill of these early subnotes, nothing over $299 is going to sell worth a damn. After all, I can get a 15" HP at my local Staples for under $399, and it has a dual-core processor, an optical drive, 2GB of RAM, and a 120GB HDD.
Ian @ Jul 23rd 2008 9:43AM
Not everyone WANTS a 15" laptop. I already have a 14.2" dual core with 4gb of ram and a DVD burner that I'm putting to an early retirement because I have to walk 4 miles a few times a week with it hanging off my back. Going from a larger 5lb notebook to a smaller 2lb netbook is a GODSEND. All I need to do with it is RDP, VPN, E-Mail, Web, Office and IM. Why do I need all that weight and powet to do those things? I'm buying a Wind (as soon as they show up in stock anywhere in the US that is) to use for just such purposes.
Craig @ Jul 23rd 2008 9:51AM
Ian, you're one of those "gadget nuts" I mentioned (case in point: you bother to not just read Engadget, but comment on others' comments), so you're not the mass-market. Your needs are different from most people's, who are much more interested in cheap and big than light and small.
Ian @ Jul 23rd 2008 10:09AM
But my point is, that there are LOTS of people in my office who are NOT gadget nuts that want something small and light and cheap. $500 is cheap for a 'laptop' that can do everything most people do on a laptop. Executives that are on planes a lot like having a small laptop. One of the guys at my work got rid of his larger ThinkPad 14" for a 12.1" just because he had to travel frequently and did not like lugging around a large laptop merely to check his email and occasionally run a presentation.
Kite @ Jul 23rd 2008 10:48AM
You dont get it do you. Most of us buying these netbooks already have 15" notebooks. The selling point of these little 9-10" netbooks is their size and portability, not their price. We dont need the dual-core processors or the optical drives to do what we need to do with the computer most of the time anyways, so why would we want to lug that brick around just to surf the net, use im or do some typing.
Not everything is about money. Its more about utility
Tubalcain @ Jul 23rd 2008 9:07AM
That shit is ridiculous. Who the hell would pay $625-$790 for netbook? I see, LG is actually trying to make profit on this because the COGS on these things are pretty cheap. At the prices mentioned above, you might as well by a core2duo or Athlon Turion X2, with more ram, connections, etc.
Rick @ Jul 23rd 2008 9:29AM
1. I hope LG isn't in a hurry for delivery. MSI can't even deliver their Winds here let alone make UMPCs for someone else.
2. As craig mentioned the price is getting out of hand at the $700-level.
fgpx78 @ Jul 23rd 2008 9:44AM
That's not ment to be a Low-Cost Laptop. That's just a small 700$ laptop, and nobody at LG said it will cost 200$ (like Asus did years ago about the eee...)
Ian @ Jul 23rd 2008 9:45AM
That was going to be my comment. Maybe they should get them for sale in decent quantities in the US before they start farming out manufacturing capacity. Thats like a company asking Nintendo to build them a gaming console. You STILL can't get a Wii off the shelf with any regularity in the US.
Clearly not @ Jul 23rd 2008 9:50AM
MSI manufactures the "E" series of notebooks (E200,E500) branded by LG.
i general LG notebooks are very good but steer clear of the "E" series.
Allen Jazeera @ Jul 23rd 2008 9:58AM
I'm still waiting for a MSI Wind tear-down so I can make a comment about breaking wind. Or maybe I'll just post that joke somewhere else where it's totally unrelated ...
slall @ Jul 23rd 2008 10:27AM
I've been thinking about buying one of these netbooks (trying to decide between the MSI, Acer and the upcoming Dell)... I think it would be really useful to get work done during my commute, when I don't want to carry my full size laptop, but a 1 kg netbook would do well...
I would love to get one with Linux, but my university wi-fi requires a VPN download and it's only compatible with windows/mac.... any ideas/experience on how to use linux in such a situation?
silverblackvoid @ Jul 23rd 2008 11:17AM
now where is william tell?
tiuk @ Jul 23rd 2008 2:26PM
Hahahahaha.
anon @ Jul 23rd 2008 3:22PM
Haha, you know MSI is just selling the Wind to LG for retail price, and LG is just raising the price. :)
anonymous3K @ Jul 23rd 2008 3:50PM
I can 100% confirm that the X110 is not a MSI product
Rick @ Jul 23rd 2008 4:16PM
Care to enlighten us on who makes it then?
elmomat @ Jul 23rd 2008 3:55PM
if it is still unclear X110 is NOT A MSI A WIND.
digitallysick @ Jul 23rd 2008 6:02PM
If its going to be made by MSI, just add 3+ months to the actual product release date *cough msi wind*
Simon @ Jul 24th 2008 6:53AM
Doesn't that spec break Microsoft's rules for using XP - I thought 1GB/80GB was the limit.
Free LG Laptop @ Sep 18th 2008 9:11AM
LG is about to get into the booming netbook market, after announcing their own brand mini-notebook LG X110 which was unveiled this week and is expected to cost about £320.
The mini-laptop will be initially availble at phones-4-u stores throughout the UK & on their website (possibly for free) from late October in two colours - white and pink! A black version should also be available some time afterwards.
