MacBook rumors swirling: glass trackpads, custom chipsets, ponies, ice cream
An interesting wave of MacBook rumors hit today, for some reason, following up on these weird case images we saw a while back. First up, Seth Weintraub at Computerworld says the new machines will be manufactured in an all-new process out of one sheet of aluminum and feature glass multi-touch trackpads -- which seems entirely unnecessary, since there's no reason for the trackpads to be clear if there's no screen underneath them. (No, there's not going to be a screen underneath them. Stop it.) Second, AppleInsider says that the inherent suck of Intel's integrated graphics solutions is pushing Apple away from using the Centrino 2 / Montevina platform in the MacBook, and that the company's planning on doing its own custom chipset instead. That'd be a big step for Apple, since it's basically used Intel reference designs ever since it went x86 -- but given how useless Intel's integrated graphics are when really pushed, we can see why Apple's ready to walk away. Of course, this is all nothing more than rumor and speculation, so we wouldn't expect any of this to actually come to pass, but hey, it's fun to dream, right?

plz take your pills jon..

Hey troll, take your pill and go back in your cave hermit!
The Centrino 2 chipset allows switching between discrete and onboard graphics. Apple may decide to take advantage of that (not ditch the onboard graphics as they are fine for most usage). Personally, I doubt that they will produce their own chip rather than take some from ATI, for example. On the glass touchpad it could allow users to spoil the aesthetics of their laptops by slipping personalised images, etc underneath it.
im just about to buy a macbook for my b-day but really dont want to buy one if a new range is about to come out does anyone know when apple usually makes new products will it be anttime soon?
Apple MacBooks are overpriced, overrated and build like crap.
Ordered.
kudos Jon, yours is the first post i've ever seen on engadget that had the words "Apple" and "hate" together in one post without getting low(est) rank. that truly is a first for me
and if you want to see real apple fanboy trolling at its finest, just read any Gizmodo article written by Jesus.
I'm still using a 17" G4 Powerbook 1.5 GHz from four years ago and it's always been very reliable.
I upgraded the RAM and installed a 250GB hard drive (original was 80GB which was HUGE when it was new - laughable now) but otherwise it's a great, well built machine.
Is there any chance a glass trackpad would incorporate some kind of drawing capability? That would be useful.
It boggles my mind how stupid apple has always been with graphics cards!
At best it has been a year behind the PC world and that only with the high end overpriced macs that come with mediocre Nvidia and ATi cards.
What the hell apple? Every apple should come with a decent mid line Nvidia card. Is that so hard to do? 3D is expected nowadays. Keep the Intel chips if you want, thats not whats slowing performance!
Integrated graphics cards are the stuff of cheapo systems, bottom of the line.
NVidia. hey apple, go to their website and look around a bit!

Um... what? There are plenty of laptops out there with Intel chipsets and discrete graphics. I doubt it's Intel's fault that Apple was too cheap to put a discrete video adapter in the MB line. They did it to save money, just like everyone else. The least they could do is own up to it.
You made my day with the ponies, ice cream!
