Sony CECHL01 PlayStation 3 wanders aimlessly into FCC database
Call it a remarkably strong hunch, but we've got a feeling that the detail-less console that just popped up in the FCC's database is the 80GB "Core" PlayStation 3 we heard about at E3. The FCC filing is exceptionally devoid of juicy nuggets, with just a pair of ID labels to swoon over. We can see that the new model will be dubbed CECHL01, but outside of that, it's a total crapshoot as to what's going on here. Okay, maybe not, but it's fun to pretend.

and people complain about frivolous apple related posts?
wow... confirmation of an SKU update that had already been confirmed by the company and brings absolutely nothing new to the console.
Video-Game Console: (n) - A Gadget for playing video-games.
Cell-phone, laptop, desktop, PMP, LCD, PDP, DSLR. If they post about graphics cards, its rightfully unbiased to post about console updates, even if it is as dull and boring as this one.
And what exactly are these juicy nuggets?
ask your father
How I love engadget reader's wit and humor. Just goes to show that the stories are worth reading regardless of how boring they may seem just for the comments. Props to From My Cube for the funniest comment I've seen on engadget for a while.
@snuff
Sounds to me like you're sucking Cube's juicy nuggets a little too hard.
if you ain't got nothing to publish, then don't!
Hope they put 45nm cell processor into new ps3.
This'll have the 65nm RSX chip surely?
Less power consumption, cooler and hopefully quieter. And cheaper to manufacture of course.
Wait! I don't see how this Engadget story is ripping Sony. Where's the negativity? Where's the smarminess? In fact, there are terms like "fun" and "swoon" being used.
What did you guys do with the real Engadget???
I think this is not the 80GB, as I think this one is (it has confidentiality of the photo's until 14-august (which is just a week or 2 before it will hit the EU):
First link is to all documentents, second link is to documents you can check out..
https://fjallfoss.fcc.gov/oetcf/eas/reports/ViewExhibitReport.cfm?mode=Sum&calledFromFrame=N&RequestTimeout=500&application_id=809146&fcc_id=\
https://gullfoss2.fcc.gov/oetcf/eas/reports/ViewExhibitReport.cfm?mode=Exhibits&RequestTimeout=500&calledFromFrame=N&application_id=425747&fcc_id='AK8CBEH1101'
But check out the labellocation between the link I provided, and the version that is mentioned in the article (next link)
https://gullfoss2.fcc.gov/oetcf/eas/reports/ViewExhibitReport.cfm?mode=Exhibits&RequestTimeout=500&calledFromFrame=N&application_id=172989&fcc_id='AK8CBEH1500'
The new version has no vents at the top.. I can't sadly find the complete list of documents which maybe mention until when those photo's are confidential, as I can't really use the fcc site at all, even knowing numbers, the search engine of the site doesn't find the above (also the first)...
Why does it say "MADE IN CHINA FOX"
Because it's made in China Fox, duh.
The serious answer that you crave: I think FOXCONN (not to be confused with anything from MGS lore) handles Sony's manufacturing of these. Sony contracts it out, and Foxconn builds them. It's the way a lot of electronics manufacturing gets done these days.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Foxconn
And just when I wrote my reply I found the list:

Here you can see the photo's will be available from 4-sept... which propably coincides with the US release.. hmmmm.. ahwell, we'll see...
If it's the "Core" PS3, why is it Wi-Fi certified? Isn't it missing the Wi-Fi, just like the other less expensive PS3's, but with a larger Hard Drive?
No, only the 20gb PS3 lacked WiFi, which has been discontinued since mid 2007.
Oh.. Hmm.
I thought that was one of the reasons the more expensive PS3's were better.. But I guess that was only the 20gb.
Only microsoft would leave out something as important as wifi.
Rest in peace backwards compatibility. : (
But can it play pong?
no, but it can play out your mom really nice. ;)
So they have to go through the FCC again just for a hard drive upgrade?
I hope something more interesting is developing.
