Hacker stuffs a wired 360 controller in a DualShock 3 shell
Console modders out there have been doing crazy things with controllers for a while now, and while this latest piece isn't as crazy as the one-handed Access Controller, it's still good for a double-take -- check out this wired 360 controller shoehorned into a DualShock3 shell, complete with green LEDs. THe modder, RDC, says it works great, rumble included, but that there's no headset connector and the L2 and R2 triggers aren't analog -- both things he's hoping to fix in the next version. We'd suggest keeping the DS3 buttons as well -- while the colorful 360 buttons look pretty hot against that black case, we'd rather break this thing out and blow minds stealth-style.

Who, Jacob? You know where to find him, Locke...
They should make one for my gamecast.
Guys, a person named RDC made it and not Ben Heck...
He should have done the OPPOSITE.
The 360 controller is way more comfortable in my opinion. If I could buy a PS3 controller in 360 size I would do it in an instant.
@CM
Thanks for making my day!
seriously....why? why even bother???
Ahhhh, the X is in the wrong spot!
I don't get why people make comments like Abuzar. For one thing, the opposite has already been done. For another, it shouldn't matter at all what your personal preference is. There are other people in the world besides you. I believe that there should be all kinds of shapes and sizes of controllers for consoles, to suit the personal tastes of a variety of people. I never understood forcing everyone to use one specific controller type. That's why I generally like the PS3 over the 360 too, because there's comanies out there like MadCatz and Brando making a variety of 3rd party controllers... unfortunately they're not different enough from the originals, IMO... Except the arcade sticks.
Overall I prefer the PS controllers over Xbox, but I'd love to get a hybrid of the two because I like the width of the 360 controller, but hate the heft, and the oddly placed left stick drives me nuts. I guess I'm a sucker for symmetry.
Are you done yet?
whats a DS3 button?
Dlaystation 3?
Duelshock 3 you fuckin' retard.
i think you've been challenged to a duel
Robino...while you're calling people "retards," might you mean DuAlshock3?
It's Nintendos super-secret next handheld.
I seriously LOL'd at this, best comment exchange so far today.
@robino:
Dude, fuck you. I don't own a PS3 and the dualshock 3 has been out for what, 3 months?
You're a douche-bag, man. Since when has engadget become exclusively a stupid fanboy/flame war battle ground?
You can't even spell dualshock and you're calling me a retard? (Never mind the PC of your statement, that's a whole other rant)
I'm here to electronically gather news about gadgets, and comment on them. Why are you here? Seriously dude, fuck off.
This is supposed to be a site where people learn things, but I guess you're still not learning anything, much less civility or intelligence.
Ironically, you're turning it into MORE of a flame war by swearing at him so much. Also, they even said DualShock 3 in the title AND the article, so...joke's on you.
oh snap!
wow so much negative energy...
how much for box seats to this flame fest?
NoAndThen is the wahhhhmbulance driver of the day. wahhhhhhhhhhh
note to self: Never mix the herb and the internet.

*munch* *munch* Don't stop now, keep it going!
@noandthen
Also dude, if u owned a PS2, it was called Dualshock2. So really it hasn't been out for 3 months....
Correct me if i'm wrong but hasn't the PS3 controller been DS3 the whole time??
So in conclusion in your words "Seriously dude fuck off"
i have to add one more thing:

you'd better listen to him. he's Rick James. bitch.
Both the OP for this thread and the first reply guy should get to know each other better, because they're going to be room mates at the BURN ward
I challenge Robino to a spelling duel.
Your obviously starting a flame war. And you obviously know what DS3 means, it's just that you tend to bash the PS3 secretly.
DelayShock ? Delay Beyond ?
@Rick James:
No, PS3 controllers were SIXAXIS controllers and did not feature DualShock capabilities until early April (in the US).
This was most likely due to the court case (Immersion v Sony) preventing Sony from releasing the DS3 controllers until they came to an agreement and licenced the tech from Immersion
@Dillon
No, THIS...IS...SPARTA!!!!!
I learned what DS3 meant from this flame war, thanks.
. . . And so the sky's parted and the ground cracked and the heavens and hell merged and all life seized to exist.
"seized to exist"...wtf...i'm thinking you're seizing something a little too hard there buddy.
"And so the sky's parted" The sky's *what* parted? Spelled this way it implies possession. Should be skies. This implies more than one sky. How did you ever get a job without a high-school level understanding of the English language?
before you mock this person, "sky's" is also like it's. Therefore sky is, and it is. not possession. the ' infers that there is a letter missing.
also when reffering to the blah blah blah , you should blah blah blah , because it infers blah blah .
wow. thoughtful addition to the post. You borrowed your younger brothers dictionary. Thank you.
Moses parted your ass crack
@pepsi
and so the SKY IS parted and the ground cracked?
bzzzt
fail
Really, that's a elementary school level understanding...possession is one of the most basic concepts of grammar, yet it is an unbelievable flagrant and common error.
umm. i think it's, "And so the sky has parted and the ground cracked and the heavens and hell merged and all life ceased to exist."
but then again it's hard to understand the relevance of your comment.
next time, remember to check the dictionary and an english text book. :)
But but but all the 360 players who have played my PS3 claim their controller is superior
Ohh, I guess this is for when PS3 fanboys want to play a 360 and be able to cover it up in case someone walks in on them.
Personally I just find that the 360 controller conforms to your hand better. The dualshocks have always been kind of rigid you know?
Besides that I think the concave shape and position of the 360's thumb sticks allow for better control. The dual shocks are smooth and their position feel awkward when holding the controller but then again I have big hands...
Yah, well personal preference I suppose, being used to either controller makes anything different seem a little weird, which is probably why I don't really like 360 controllers, but I am sure if I played the thing more often I would get used to it. Somehow a few hundred hours of COD4 on PS3 has me stuck on that controller.
yea those analog sticks are what bug me the most about playstation controllers, if they just switched the d-pad and left analog it would of been a major improvement to there controllers.
If they did that, wouldn't it be a Nintendo GameCube controller, only black?
I want one of these very badly. I need the challenge achievements in DDRU and DDRU2, and getting them with the pad, while possible, would take far too much time (the 360 controller sucks for DDR. Aside from the d-pad being garbage, its offset, so the controller layout isn't symmetrical, and it makes me make mistakes that I wouldn't have made otherwise). I just checked his site, and couldnt find project info, but I'm wondering if this could be done with a DS2 instead, as I have an old one laying around, and would rather not shell out for a new DS3. My other option was to buy an XFPS360, but im not gonna spend a hundred bucks for something that I'm only going to use for two games. Now, when is that ion drum kit coming out?
Yeah, I have both systems and I would MUCH rather have a mod that put a DualShock 3 into the form factor of the Xbox 360 controller. It's a much better ergonomic fit for my hammy mitts.
Yeah, this is a huge step back for a 360 controller. Putting the guts of a PS3 controller in a 360 controller's shell would make far more sense.
I would love a mod for the Dualshock in a 360 controller. It just fits my hands way better. That sounds like a product that would get sales.

Enjoy yourself.
That may make play xbox now. May be...
u wot?
i think he's worried about his johnson
i am job
I am Error.
job: "i am job"
udub: "I haven't seen you round b4"
That is pure awesomeness.
ditto
Thats a great Hack , But the Duel shock SUCKS compared to the 360 controller... I have not tried the DS3 .. i still use the light as a feather non rumble DS i got at launch .. I bet that is much better because it weighs something
The controller that came with the launch PS3 is called the SIXAXIS, not dualshock. It has motion controls, but no vibration. The DS3 is the first Sony controller to have both motion sensing and vibration.
It's DualShock, not duel, and don't knock it till you've tried it!
What the sht are you talking about ? Who cares what is called .. I own the SIXAXIS like i said .. and its freaking hollow ... its worthless ... I have not tried the DS3 so i cant compare that
If it ain't broke don't fix it. That's what I say. Well in this case if it ain't broke don't break it?
Cool but very odd! I would thought he would of done a DS3 into a 360 controller.
You could fit Milwaukee in a 360 controller.....not that you'd want to.....unless you did.
and that would be the only way i would play an 360, those controlers suck! good job ben!
Its obvious you've never touched an Xbox controller. It conforms to your hands more-so than the 1st generation-esque DS3.
Like 'em both, though.
sony hasn't changed their basic controller shape since ps1. and no, they did not get it right the first time.
Depends on your opinion.
I like the Playstation controllers. Fits my hands perfectly.
OMFG, why in the world would you want to use a DS3 controller instead of the 360 controller???? Dude, do it the other way around, put the internals of the DS3 into a 360 controller, please and I'll buy 2 from you!
The aging DS3 design needs to go. I loved it for like 8 years but after getting the 360 & PS3 I've come to realize the Dual Shock design is just plain flawed and dated. I've since gotten the Nyko Zero which is 100x better than the DS3. Close but no match for the 360's controller, which is just plain damn goodness. Some company needs to just copy that controller verbatim.
I fully and completely agree with you.
he has done so awhile back
oh god, here we go again with the console CONTROLLER wars. good god, who cares.
I wouldn't go so far as to call it flawed. And really it's not a hell of a lot different from the Xbox controller except they swapped the stick and the D-pad. The 360's prettier for sure, but same basic function. The Wii is the only console really trying to change how we interact with games.
@fred
he means the shape. the sony controller design does not fit the average hand very well. also, i feel like the analog sticks on sony controllers are harder to use for fps. they work fine for rpg stuff though. but i think my favorite controller ever was the smaller Xbox controller.
OMFG Byron!
Maybe you would want to use a DS3 controller because you have a Playstation 3. And maybe the guy that wants to use a 360 controller does so because he has an XBox 360.
The expression "to each his own" really comes into play here. You might consider the design flawed and dated, but others might find it simple and, well, not so dated.
Fred, as far as shape is concerned, can you show me the 'average hand.' Some consider the 360 controller too large, others view it as just right. Same goes for every other system.
Personally, I prefer the PS3 controller. Not because that's the only system I own. That's just my preference. In no way does that mean I think the 360 controller is flawed, dated, or 'worse' by any standards.
It's like the endless "McDonald's vs. Burger King" debate. It could go on forever.
@MasterCKO
THE WAR TAKES NO BREAKS
That guy is awesome. He's just doing this shit because he can, now, and frankly that is the best reason ever. :)
A controller still isn't a controller without triggers.
I disagree.
My 2600 and Intellivision controllers worked just fine without an form of trigger.
FPS didn't exist then.
Thats equivilent to saying I don't need a refrigerator because in 1709 they lived without them.
Your original statement was generic and made no mention of a specific type of gameplay.
That and FPS's suck on consoles so the triggers are still useless :)
Now excuse me, I need to get a Soul Calibur IV fix.
ABOMINATION!!!

I rather use a regular Xbox 360 controller. The Xbox 360 controller fits perfectly into your hands and the triggers are fantastic. I can't stand the PS3 controller, it isn't ergonomic at all.
Although I've gotten used to the 360's controller, the PlayStation's has always been my better choice. I prefer the shoulder buttons of the PS controller to those on the 360. It's good to know that there a possibility of switching to which one works for you.
I would rather see a dual shock stuffed into the perfectly sized 360 controller
He did that more than a year ago.
http://www.engadget.com/2007/04/15/ben-hecks-ps360-sixaxis-stuffed-xbox-controller/
SPARTEN II: The DualShock 3 wasn't out more than a year ago. He used a SixAxis.
one day, when ben has done everything possible in gadget splicing, a day where he will have put his last nintendo inside a toaster, his last coleco vision stuffed into a macbook air, we will say "To heck with ben heck", and that will be the last we hear of him.
He has
that was supposed to be a reply to --Ed thanks again engadget
Eww, why would anyone want to use this. He should have done it the other way around. I've been playing the MGS games. And after beating 3 and playing 4 for a while, my thumb started to hurt. I've never had that happen while playing anything on my 360. I've always thought the Xbox had the best controllers (the S and 360 controllers).
Of course, no controller can beat a keyboard and an right-handed mouse (the ones angled to comfortably fit your hand)
God, SHUT UP!
