Gateway P-7811 FX gaming laptop coming August 14 for $1499
If you've been waiting for Gateway's P-7811 FX gaming laptop, the wait is almost over: it will begin shipping August 14, that is, if an open-lipped Best Buy is to be believed. As for specifications, you're looking at an Intel Core 2 Duo P8400 (2.26GHz, 3MB L2 cache with 1066MHz FSB), PM45 Express chipset, 17-inch WUXGA display at 1920 x 1200, Nvidia GeForce 9800M-GTS with 512MB GDDR3, 200GB 7200RPM spinner, 8x DVD burner, HDMI 1.2, eSATA, a 5-in-1 media card reader, 1.3MP camera, and a 9-cell Li-ion battery. The $1,499 machine weighs in at 9.2-lbs and will be ready for your Crysis, Spore, etc. in a couple weeks.

yeah, but you only get a 10 minute trial.
The price is AMAZING. I can't believe it.
Question:
That Core 2 Duo processor, is it enough to run FSX/Crysis smoothly on high?
The CPU usually isn't the biggest factor with a gaming PC, the graphics card is. And yes, that processor and the 9800m GTS will have no problem running FSX and I'm sure they will even run Crysis smoothly at decent settings.
But don't expect to run Crysis at max-settings though.
THANK you xValentine... that's all I needed to know.
So guys, what is the cheapest gaming laptop out there capable of smoothly running Crysis at ultra-high settings?
I really, really wish Gateway offered more customization options on their systems. I would buy from them in a heartbeat if they did.
Just to point out, Spore might not work on it simply because EA does not support laptop GPUs.
Went through about 3 weeks of emailing back and forth trying to get the creature creator to work on my Gateway NX860XL which has a Geforce Go 7900 GS and we never got a solution.
My friend has the P-6860 FX with the 8800m gts and spore creature creator works great
HELL YEAH!
A laptop that runs the latest vid card offering from Nvidia at a decent price point!? YES, I've been waiting for a year for this from any company...
dammit, I seriously hope Nvidia doesn't muck this up with some bullshit a year down the line about overheating issues.
Only 9.2lbs? I'll be sure to order a forklift to lug it around.
You must be really scrawny if your not willing to carry around 10 pounds.
Back in school I had to carry 30+ pounds of books every day for homework.
30 pounds wasn't that bad, so I think 10 pounds wouldn't be bad either.
9.2 lbs gaming machine? that arcade in the laundromat is waaaaay heavier. I'll take 9.2 lbs.
Very nice specs on this machine, but only HDMI 1.2? With those specs, it should be 1.3a (1.2 isn't bad, of course; I just want the best capability, support, and flexibility I can get when outputting video and audio). It should also have a Blu-ray drive (at least as an option, anyway - maybe it will, who knows?). I also would've liked to see a fingerprint reader.
Other than those three things - good specs and good price! I just hope the real-world performance is as good as the specs are on paper. And I hope it has the aesthetics to match (seems to look nice from the little I see in the photo above, but it's impossible to tell at this point).
How does the 9800 GTS compare to the 8800 GTS in the P-173XL FX? I would think for just a $130 more a 2.4 C2 and 400GB in raid 0 would be a better deal. Any thoughts?
I noticed that the only difference is 100 mhz for the core clock, is this worth the loss in cpu and space? I am just wondering because I was on the verge of getting the P-173XL FX with the 8800M GTS and the 2.4 ghz C2 with 4 gb ram and 400 hd (200x2 raid 0) for $1630 (I think)
You want to hear an opinion? How about getting a PC? No laptop can get faster than a proper PC at the same price point.
Thats one. Two - get the very very best CPU you can, its the bottleneck of any laptop.
First, I buy a gaming laptop for it to be a gaming laptop (as in portability and power), not a gaming desktop. Second, I'm going into college, hence the laptop.
But will I notice more of a difference with a processor that 140 mhz faster or with a GPU thats 100 mhz faster?
Gosh darn comment system!
For gaming, the gpu will almost always be the bottleneck, unless you're running a Pentium 4 or something. While a 100mhz faster cpu might give you an extra .5fps, a 100mhz faster gpu will probably give you an extra 1-2fps.
I highly doubt that those specs will be on the $1499 version of the laptop. The real thing is likely a bit watered down.
The specs are up on bestbuy.com now and they are correct. I will order mine tonight!
That's my dream gaming laptop. Will see if I can buy it next year.
you look like a blonde
that explains it
1920x1200 is a bit too big for portable gaming. LCDs need to run at native to look the best, and i doubt 9800M GTS will handle new and upcoming games at 1200p. I liked Gateway's last $1499 offering: 8800M GTS, and 1440x900 resolution. If this thing had a 1440x900 or 1680x1050, i wouldn't think twice about getting it.
i just bought the 1.8ghz 8800 version at best buy today do you think it wud be worth returning and paying the $200 restocking fee to get the new model that has a 1080p screen and faster processor and newer graphics card?
Christ 9 pounds. How am I supposed to lug that around. What laptop is the best when it comes to weight : performance ratio?
This one.
@SINN
Yeah but this laptop can copy and paste. Can your iPhone 3G Do that?
Actually the iPhone 3G can according to Apple, but I wouldn't know.
Nice specs; I'm having after thoughts about spending half more on a Mac of the same specs... And no OS X isn't work $1000.
Gateway is trying hard to get people to buy their stuff since they were bought by Acer for like 1/10 of their worth in 2001.
Only problem is you're stuck with Gateway's less than spectacular tech support. The "nice" people over there tried to inform me that restore CDs for my desktop did not exist and then said it was $20 to ship a copy, but that I'd have to call a long distance number to order them.
If you want to take the risk of having to use Gateway tech support, I'd say it's a pretty good deal, as is most of their 2008 line. However, I'm not sure I'd take the risk (then again, whose tech support has been any decent the last few years?).
Engadget....moderate these messages. 90% of commentary has nothing to do with article.
As for the article, I'm impressed with the pricing but I do agree that a Blu-Ray drive would be icing on the cake.
the only problem i have with gaming laptops is battery life
you'd need to keep this thing plugged in the majority of the time
I would love Gateway products to return to Australia. We're sick of having overpriced notebooks.
You should be able to upgrade to Blu-ray later whenever they come out with the drive. Nice thing is the 512MB vs thew 256MB in my 8600 now. Big thing I'm wondering is if XP drivers would be available assuming I'd even have the cash for it.
I have a P-6860FX (precursor to this laptop), and for $1300 I paid for it, it's ridiculously good. For an extra $200, better screen and updated graphics card/platform, it's a no-brainer for someone who wants gaming in a portable. And yes, it plays Crysis perfectly (along with any other game out right now).
Well I am torn between this and

All of em have great specs but I dont know which one to go for!
If someone could help me its greatly appreciated!
Well it is still an e-machines laptop, not really a gateway. The gateway name is on it but that is it.
These laptops have killer specs for the price but are built like crap. If you do buy one please do yourself a favor and get the extended warranty. My e-machines/gateway laptop failed 4 times in two years, Best-Buy gave me a new one and it failed 2 times in the next two years. I had every part replaced. My warranty ran out and the laptop is still running but the screen flickers on and off at random times and the machine will just shut off randomly.
Buy an ASUS instead. They are built much better and have a factory 2 year warranty.
