Xbox 360's new Dashboard game install demoed on video
We've already seen walkthroughs of the new Xbox 360 Dashboard, but this is the first look we've had at a feature we're sort of stoked on: the ability to install games to the internal hard drive from DVD. From the looks of things, it's an extremely simple process to get the data moved over (despite the long waits for multiple GB files being copied), though it looks like you'll still need the DVD on hand to actually play the game. Don't believe a word we're saying? Take a look at the video after the break and see for yourself!

@Brian Ketterer
That's a lot of commas.
At you all - Ps3 is the best console! So it doesnt matter what Xbox do as they are going to be always behind Sony!
I should have hated you before reading your comment.
make it work on a USB hard drive instead of the rridiculously expensive offical drive, and I'll be impressed.
Any reason why this would or would not work across multiple systems? I have two 360s that I share one HDD between, if I rip the game on one console should I expect it to work on the other?
I would think it'll still work. Since you'd need the actual disk anyway to confirm ownership, it shouldn't matter which machine the hard drive is connected to when you go play. That being said, Microsoft has been known for doing weird stuff with DRM, so if it didn't work, I wouldn't be surprised either... :-)
Huh. that brings up the LAN party aspect. Does this now allow for an entire lan party to "install" a single copy of the game, and then pass around the disc to start up all the systems with? I wonder.
I'll be interested in hearing how this works with backups. I have a modded 360, but it can't load from burned discs fast enough to play GTA:IV. Hopefully hard-drive loading will fix this, if Microsoft doesn't find a way to prevent burned copies from working with this update.
YU LIKE 2 STEEL!??
Wow, this is pretty cool. I agree with the rest of you who hope that this will quiet down the 360. I have an Xbox Elite with with a 120 gig hard drive and with only 5 games, i'll be set. When is this update coming out?
I'm guessing late fall (November, I would assume) since that's when the Netflix compatibility stuff is scheduled to start. I hope I'm wrong and it's sooner.
It'll be interesting to see how quickly how many HDD's die because of the increased use.
I agree with others though. There needs to be a way to not need to put the disk in every time I play.
This could be easily achieved with a "use once code" in the box. This is something I've been waiting to happen for a few years now. Sadly, that's also a perfect method for killing used sales. But, most places rip both parties off on used games anyway (too low a tradein value for the resale).
Use a different class of code for "purchased" than for "rent". Make the "rent" code's multi-use, but not allow HDD storage and/or required the disk.
I get the "disk unreadable" error 9 times out of 10 when playing certain games. Only option was to replace the drive. Now if I can just load from hard drive, I can save the $$$.
I had that with Mass Effect. Took it down to my local gamestation and got them to skim a layer off with their fancy "layer skimming" machine for £2. Works a treat now and is quieter spinning too for some reason.
Sexy.
This is a grea idea, especially when you've got games like Blue Dragon and Lost Odyssey that span multiple discs, you should be able to load all the discs to the hard drive and then only use disc 1 for the game to load initially! Not to mention it'll be quieter when the drive isn't in use, and should stop those annoying "disc could not be read" messages when you're half way through a level!
I think this points the way for more multi-disc releases on the Xbox!
This will really show what the 360's hard drives are made of too. Wondering if it'll cut down on the number of RRoDs what with all the discs not having to spin like crazy.
Looking forward to the eventual exploit where someone will write code onto an ISO which, when burned to a DVD, placed into a 360, and installed, allows you to install a game on top of it allowing you to keep only the custom ISO DVD in the drive while allowing you to play any game on top of that code.
good point.. hopefully soon
What really sucks is they only put a 20 gig hard drive in the halo 360, and no matching upgrade available.
damn I just bought a ps3 too! Though I love MGS4 it's the first MGS I've played. But that's cool to be able to download games into the box. Ps3 best DVD player I've ever had.
This could be really cool. I can see in the future borrowing a disc from a friend, loading it onto my 360, then buying the rights to it over xbox live so there is no need for the disc at all. And eventually simply full downloads over live. Yeah for no more physical media!
I see this as being one possible way to combat the PS3 Bluray advantage. For a game like the upcoming Rage, where 360 owners are going to get a "lesser" version because it would take 3 dvd's to hold all the content that the PS3 can hold on 1 bluray disc. Because of this, Carmack has already stated that the 360 version would not be as good as the PS3 version. He also stated that it would not be cost effective for ID to put the game on 3 disc so the 360 version will have less content and/or less graphical beauty.
You could purchase the game on a single DVD and download all the additional content onto your hard drive as thus, maintain the original game in it's original form. This is the only way that Microsoft will be able to compete against bluray until someone in Redmond decides to eat their pride and give us, their devote followers, a bluray player for game content.
This gives me hope that my scratched COD4 will be playable again!!
you'll need to rent a copy to install the game though :-\
wow its so sexy now
I eagerly await this functionality.
when is tis update and is it free?
people are so dumb and blindly hate change when they dont know how awesome the new thing is. listen up.
you get everything you had before. EVERYTHING.
-minus ads and clutter
-plus game installs and avatars
dont want to use installs? then dont. but do not hate on the update and ask for the clutter back just because you dont like the idea of a single feature. believe me the interface is going to make it faster and easier for everyone to access what they want. hardcore to parents and little kids, this update is going to be a nice refresh, and its free.
OMG, Man i hope this fixes all those issues in Mass Effect... I think Mass Effect would be the first game i would install.. Then i will post a video about it..
No Thank you. I don't want this. its not very nice looking. I don't like the sliding pannels and the big blank blue one that says your not signed in looks dumb and boring. I like the way i have my box customized now. I don't want to change it. The idea of an install is a great if it reduces load times but since I am cheap and have the small drive i may not get the update until I absolutely have too. The background is lame I like having my girls boobs as my xbox wallpaper much better.
In reply to someone who mentioned about using external harddrives for this, I don't think that will be allowed, that could possibly open a door for modders and hackers.
