Unspectacular PSP-3001 outed by the FCC
We expect a lot when Sony makes a full point update from the PSP-2001. Unfortunately, that doesn't seem to be the case as we thumb through the FCC filing for Sony's newest PSP. Then again, it's being pretty tight-lipped with most of the juicy docs well hidden in support of Sony's request for confidentiality. We can tell you that the FCC's tests were all focused on the 2.4GHz spectrum for the PSP-3001's stated use of 802.11b WiFi (nothing new there) -- no GPS, no 802.11 Draft-n, no Bluetooth. In fact, the schematic used to demonstrate the FCC ID placement looks identical to the existing PSP slim -- no evidence of that rumored mic or redesigned Home button. Guess we'll have to wait for this one to walk through the system a bit. Nevertheless, fanboys rejoice, PSP-3001 is real and this close to a formal announcement. See the label placement pic after the break.

Ummm, everybody says this is a not so good thing, but for a person who still has a psp-1001, who did have cfw, but took it away for obvious complications...
i would get this, i mean, all those who get cfw, (i used ot have it..) what does it do? it lets it so you can play pirated games? oh, that makes you feel so much better, you can change the xmb? the one on the ofw looks quite nice for an xmb, and sony even added a thing where you can change the icons. really i see no reason to go back to cfw.
and if this psp didnt contain a umd drive, i wouldnt care, all of the games i play now dont require the umd drive, as sony made them downloadable, socom ftb2, beats, flow, wipeout pure, wipeout ps1, i rally dont care though, if this new psp had no ability to go cfw, i wouldnt care. it shows sony is actually doing something to the console thats hurting them.
Have you been living under a rock, Anthony?
It's not just about the piracy of PSP games. I hardly play ANY PSP games anymore. Or PS1 games (even though you can play pretty much ANY PS1 game made). There is so much solid homebrew out there, emulators for pretty much any classic systems (NES, SNES, N64, C64, Atari consoles, TI92/98, MAME, ScummVM, CPS1/2, MSX, and hell, even Mac OS 7/8). Got YouTube videos? Use PSPTube.
If you've got a Phat (like me), you can use infrared and serial keyboards, as well as several GPS units with homebrew apps and plugins, as well as use your PSP as a universal remote. Both the Phat and Slim can stream data over USB/WiFi from your computer with iRShell.
You can change the whole flow of the XMB with a CFW. Reorder the icons, change menu texts, reanimate flipping through XMB menu icons, the whole thing. Not to mention Project 4, which is an XMB replacement built from the ground up by hombrew developers and easily customizable.
If the new PSP had no ability to have CFWs installed on it, people would look for ways to do so. No code is perfect, and until a reliable crack was released, sales wouldn't be anything to write home about. You wouldn't be able to take full advantage of the PSP's hardware.
ummm... almost all of you thinks that Nintendo is better than sony
well, that is true but Nintendo is a company that is dedicated and focused on selling gaming consoles and Sony is a company that sells many other electronic devices. They are not just limited in those gaming devices. And if you're going to say all this bad things about the
PSP you should have bought a PS3.
my guess is this one will have higher security to avoid custom firmwares..........
Homebrew fans should stop fighting Sony and risking bricked consoles by just getting a GP2X or Pandora. Open systems, open media -- and homebew and emulate away to your heart's content.
seems like sony is following apples lead.. change one thing and all the sudden its a completely new device.
i can honestly say the ONLY reason I bought my slim psp was to load custom firmware on it and play emulated games. it's pretty much the ultimate handheld game machine. if sony is really going to release this new PSP without any noticeable changes or improvements, then the only thing they could be doing is trying to fend off the modders. They will not succeed. They are wasting their time on this "protection" when they could be adding value to the PSP in lots of different ways. But let's assume that they did succeed, and anyone who attempted to load cfw would instantly brick their psp. I'm sure that's what sony would like. In that case, all they would have done is maliciously cripple the new psp and increase the demand for the older ones. They would not have added any value at all, in fact they would have decreased the value tremendously.
But enough of that. We all know that every psp will be cfw-capable one way or another. It's futile for sony to try to fight it. I won't be in the market for another psp anytime soon but I'd advise everyone I know to stay the hell away from this "new" version until dax has worked his magic on it.
