This one isn't quite as dodgy as they come, but the very notable limitations really keep this from being the whiz-bang hack that it appears to be on the surface. Hacker StreetskaterFU had no trouble getting confirmation from others that his method of running Blu-ray games from the PlayStation 3's hard drive was indeed legitimate, but it is only confirmed to work with select "older titles" including Warhawk, MotorStorm and Call of Duty 3. To make matters worse, instructions are sketchy at best, but at least there's a video of the process working after the break. Let us know how things go should you give this a whirl.
My GOD that noise was irritating. It was almost like whenever the brightness of the video was changing you could hear the camera adjusting or something, that's my only guess at what the hell that was. Really people, it isn't that hard to make a proper video, c'mon put a little more effort into things like this!
ti ti tiiii, the point is you borrow the game from a poor sucker who payed for it then copy it to you HDD and you will be able to play the game even after you give it back!
PS3 games do not have filer data. This isn't the PS2 or XBOX 360 with some oldass DVD drive. Blu-ray drives load data at the same speed regardless of where that data is on the disc. It's the 21st century now, and the PS3 doesn't need any filer data on its discs.
That said, yeah, MGS4 is the only game that would be huge. I sincerely doubt that this is legit, but if it is, I hope Sony sues these guys into oblivion like they did to those Lik-Sang assholes. Lots of game devs go out of business or don't have the profit margins to make the more novel game ideas... that is partly due to game pirates. Since I pay for my games, game pirates are damaging the awesomeness and perhaps the cheapness of my game collection. They are the consumer's enemy.
Blu-ray discs are notoriously difficult to damage (check out youtube for that kid who uses steel wool on a disc that still worked). There's the speed advantage, which is probably considerable, but it's not worth letting jackass losers pirate games. If you want cheap games, get a gameboy or a PS2. Why bother buying a PS3 and a nice TV if you're unable to afford your games?
And don't be surprised if Sony releases a firmware that only tracks this behavior, and then another firmware a few months later that bricks offender consoles. Read your terms and conditions. You don't have the right to a functioning PS3 OS if you violate copy protection.
MG4, will indeed be out for the 360. It will be called "MG4: The Longest Cutscene Game You'll Ever Play". Just because the current MG4 isn't coming out for the 360, us 360 owners will get an updated version with a different subtitle. It happened with the others, it will happen with this, hence playing off the HDD soon, no disk swapping. Also, I'm sure the HDD install will boast performance of Oblivion and Mass Effect, it may make Mass Effect playable to me now...I can't wait.
PS3 HDD game install? 360 is getting it this fall...once again PS3 will be copying and playing catch-up to the 360 in terms of features.
The PS3 has been installing games in it's harddrive since launch, so I don't know where in the 3rhell did you think that the 360 has started the HDD Install.
Kojima himself already said that the PS3 is the only console that can run MGS4. And what "updated version with a different subtitle" you're talking about ?
Then Keep playing your 360. atleast Sony doesn't make you buy all your accessories from them and charge you out the ass. 120gb HDD $180 from M$ while I planted a 250gb in my PS3 for $100. Bluetooth: Sony=Yes M$= Oh so sorry, no. Built in WiFi Sony=Yes M$= $99 addon. Online Service fee: Sony= $0 M$= $0 (cant play online) / $50. True HD Gaming Sony= Yes M$= upscaling. Media Sony= Bluray M$= DVD. I will say Live is the better online experience for now. But giving what Sony has done in less then 2 years they are making great strides to improve. Bottom line I dont hate Microsoft I own plenty of there products. But I enjoy my PS3's because Sony has never sold me a bad product.
"What's the best gaming laptop for under 1,500 bucks? I had my eye on the P7805u (Gateway), but it seems Best Buy has run out for the time being. Also, as a secondary question, I like the specs on brands such as iBUYPOWER and CyberPower and the like, but are they reliable? I'm a little worried about buying labels that aren't huge like Dell, Gateway, etc. Thanks!"

Really screams high tech with the PS3 hooked up to a CRT...
i think he was fapping
Mosquito?
What's the point of running the game on HDD when you already own a copy?
To save you switching the disk, I guess..
i think its so you dunt have to switch disc.. but im not sure.. hmm
Same reason as the Xbox360, faster loading times, and more convenient i guess
well. running games from HDD is the first giant step to piracy. PIRATES rejoice!!
Too keep your precious games in a safe place and avoid scratching it. :)
Rent > Rip > Own?
you could rent games and copy to hdd then take back the rented copy
ti ti tiiii, the point is you borrow the game from a poor sucker who payed for it then copy it to you HDD and you will be able to play the game even after you give it back!
I'd imagine that 95% of the people doing so would be so that they could run pirated games.
The other 5% would be to either protect their orininal discs or to run homebrew apps.
How cool - ok not really. What a waste of time.
YOU are the waste of time.
Poor Sonny, he tries so hard to beat the haxors. :( From a pirates point of view, this be the first step on a long rope ladder!
lol you try pirating a 50gig game... i doubt torrents will be flying very fast... and we'll need petabyte HDDs to store it all
1. newsgroups>torrentz.
2. 640GB samsung f1 hdd cost about €60 :D
3. 50GB games = marketing bu.ll.shi.t.
My guess would be 90%+ would be under 10gb. Just because it's on a Blu-Ray disc doesn't mean it uses the entire capacity.
Also, like psp isos, there is unneeded and filer data that can be ripped away.
There are very very few games on BD50's. Almost all are on BD25's and most of those I'm sure clock in well under that...
deyanimay,

While 640 Gb may only cost 120 bucks, The ps3 uses a 2.5inch HDD, which costs considerably more for the same amount of storage.
@ Giant Enemy Crab
Name one company that has gone out of business due to piracy. Most people who pirate never had the intention of buying the game anyway!
very nice!
Sounds like theres a Woodpecker in his room.
I want one! I want one! I WANT ONE!
Is he chopping up celery in his room?
no amoun of hax can make the SHITSTATION# worth its dumb price
it sux
it sux a$$, buy a xbox
I apologise for this loon on behalf of the more rational Xbox owning members of the gaming community.
Fanboy = fail, every time.
Grow up mate...
You obviously havent played metal gear solid 4.
he obviously has no need to play MGS4, his logic will fail him before he makes it to the starting screen...
and thank god he's xbox3604life, meaning that we can leave him when the new 720 rolls out...
@rhcpsfan: you mean watched MGS4, right? I've heard it's a good movie.
@Amz,
yeah right, that's what all the jealous fanboys are saying.
Too bad they won't be able to play it. Unless they buy a PS3.
@xValentine: While I'm sure that's true, it doesn't hide the fact that the cut scenes are incredibly long.
Still, each to their own I suppose.
The long cutscenes are there for a reason since MGS is a very story-driven series.
Unlike a game that I know which is just aim-shoot-and-grind.
oh wait..
typical Xbotch owner. Aside from RROD, now I remember why I would never own one, with wankers like this on XBL..
The only reason I find that failbox 360 is made of fail is you have to pay to go online while you are already paying teh internet charges

@Tiremfej: The PS3 already has HDD install...
@tiremfej
HDD Game Installations ?
Here's the who's-first list:
1. PC
2. PS3
3. 360 (Upcoming)
The PS3 has been installing games in it's harddrive since launch, so I don't know where in the 3rhell did you think that the 360 has started the HDD Install.
