ASUS kicks out four new XP-based Eee PCs for Taiwan

We know it's been a tough few days since the last Eee PC launch, but ASUS has now thankfully come through with four more ever so slightly different models to feed your questionable appetite, this time for Taiwan. Those include the 1000HD XP, 904HD XP, 901 XP and 900 XP (16G), each of which, obviously, run XP, and at least two of which (the 901 and 900) come in some of the same eye-catching colors that Korea got a taste of the other day. Somewhat curiously, only the 901 XP is listed as having an Atom processors, while the others are simply described as packing an "Intel Mobile" processor. Otherwise, you can expect the usual range of specs found on countless similar models, with prices coming in at the local equivalent of $444 to $539.

I have an Eee PC 901 with XP and the 8GB drive is really slow. I copied my OS partition to the larger drive and now it's pretty slow.
BOGRASH @ Aug 19th 2008 2:32PM
well copy it back and quit whining. the larger partition is for data only any tard knows that
sracer @ Aug 19th 2008 12:20PM
The 901 seems to have a reputation for being slow. I received a 701 last week and am quite impressed with how XP performs on it (RAM upgraded to 2GB). Boot time is 50 secs. An amazing little device for $299.
I can now understand why so many are enthusiastic about the low-end EeePCs.

Hi - which model is that? I thought the drives in those were solid state? I'm looking at buying a 12bg model...
GeorgeB @ Aug 19th 2008 1:22PM
The 901 has two SSD's... a fast 4GB and slow 8GB... the point being that you have XP installed on the primary SSD (4GB) so that it runs faster... boot time of XP on a 901 is around 35 secs...
@sracer - the 701 actually uses the same type of SSD as the 901 (8GB 'slow' drive')...

Come on Engadget, they're totally new and unique models! They have decals!
jason ehrentreu @ Aug 19th 2008 11:52AM
I think their trying to have as many eee skus as intel has processor skus, this is getting ridiculous
Lou @ Aug 19th 2008 11:57AM
asus needs to stop making so many different models of everything they do. 50 billion versions of the same chipset motherboards. 50 million versions of Eee's now too.
TareX @ Aug 19th 2008 12:05PM
I was set on getting an Eee, now I'd like to see what Dell has in hiding. I trust it will be fast, elegant and in a perfect size.
j.d.ripper @ Aug 19th 2008 12:12PM
I'm betting this EEE fiasco will be over in 12 months.
MSI wind, Aspire One and ... Dell will bring them to a grinding halt.
ilh @ Aug 19th 2008 5:31PM
The Wind has lost what it had as a big advantage (the price), virtually all the other aspects the eee 1000H is better at...
The Lenovo S9/10 are the ones to watch.
"Somewhat curiously, only the 901 XP is listed as having an Atom processors, while the others are simply described as packing an "Intel Mobile" processor"
It's not really "somewhat curiously" at all, the D stands for Dothan and we all know the 900 is the same old Cely and the 901 atom.
Flashpoint @ Aug 19th 2008 12:16PM
With each new SKU of Eee, I notice the price inches up just another notch.
I suppose ASUS has to keep rebuilding the Eee line in order to get market penetration and widen awareness about its products. Since the eee line was launched, I don't think Asus ever got this much coverage or enjoyed as much space in big box marts such as Best Buy and Circuit City. Keep in mind, some people refuse to buy a product with a name they aren't familiar with.
Years ago, I would have never bought an Asus over a Compaq or Dell. Now I'd give it some consideration as a secondary laptop to keep in my classroom or my computer lab.

new products 2008

Major4Play @ Aug 19th 2008 12:41PM
If you count a 3G iPhone as a new model no wonder Asus confuse you.
Who cares how many versions there are ! Do it really matter ? buy which ever floats you boat and shut up ......
phanbouy @ Aug 19th 2008 1:25PM
ya rly. just shut up and don't express your opinions. ;p
Jason @ Aug 19th 2008 3:21PM
actually, major, I think he meant the CakeKnife Air.
d0od @ Aug 19th 2008 12:18PM
only four new models?! :(
Steph-Chan @ Aug 19th 2008 12:26PM
I''m leaning towards the Dell. Asus has gone crazy with their pricing and countless (and pointless) models. Just wondering if it's worth the wait for the Dual Core Atom.
Mustaine @ Aug 19th 2008 12:33PM
EEE is supposed to be easy, so why release this many models? This is getting ridiculous, it's come full circle to becoming just another laptop war.
Do I buy the 900? Oh wait, there's a 901..should I get this or wait for price drop on 900? Oh look, there's another 4 models which have come out..WTF do I do?
Surely the specs don't matter that much. Make it small, give it a decent battery life, some basic apps, wi-fi and who really cares about the rest? Come to think about it...my Casio Casseopiea which I had back in '95 pretty much did all that.
Jason @ Aug 19th 2008 12:34PM
Eeew.
gdorian @ Aug 19th 2008 1:40PM
This is like torture. If I see another eee, I’m going to barf in my mouth. :(
Jason @ Aug 19th 2008 3:27PM
Yeah, but if you put them all together it says, "eeee.........eeeeeeee!"
...Aw WTF was that?? You said you wus gonna keep it in yer mouth!!!
bot @ Aug 19th 2008 2:45PM
The "D" in the model numbers probably stands for Dothan, aka Pentium M.
freakmarket @ Aug 19th 2008 8:47PM
All these netbooks would be more useful if they could run a real modern o/s like the HP 2133's do.
AMD is about to release a mobile Athlon which is a full version CPU with lower power consumption than the Intel Atoms. That will get some more Vista netbooks going.
andrewviolet @ Aug 20th 2008 5:04AM
The reason why the processors are listed as intel mobile rather than atom is since they are not atom the :
900 16G a 900 with smaller/bigger ssd drive, old processor
904 '1000' (larger for keyboard) chassis, 8.9 screen, old processor, 80gb hdd
1000HD (not to be confused with the 1000H which does have an atom) 10.2 screen, large chassis 80gb hdd old processor
901 8.9 screen and chassis, ssd, Atom processor
Confusing and I wish Asus would keep their product line simple since they could shave $40 off all their models if they didn't have so many.
Bot nice idea about the D thats the most fitting if the H stood for hard drive, as that would fit in with the 1000H/1000HD
