PlayOn media server brings Hulu / YouTube to consoles, Netflix coming soon?
PlayOn wants to make sure you can get your daily dose of Barackrolls and Airwolf episodes beyond the desktop, while Hulu might not have a slick streaming set-top box of its own, this media server software turns flash video RSS streams into easily browsed folders for your DLNA-compliant hardware. PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and HP MediaSmart HDTVs being at the top of that list (with Nintendo Wii support planned by year-end) owners can grab the beta release of the software and stream low-res episodes of Psych, or any assortment of YouTube video they please. With Netflix support "just down the road" this could provide an end around for PS3 owners looking for streaming love, or Xbox 360 owners without Xbox Live Gold (we know you're out there.) Bad news is the beta only lasts 60 days and there's a $30 pricetag waiting at the end of the free lunch highway. Our experience was good, with no stutters in a Psych episode streamed via Wi-Fi to the PS3 (albeit with no choice of HD clips), but we'd wait for confirmation on the whole Netflix bit before dropping any dough.
Update: Getting 69-C00D36C4 / folder could not be accessed errors on your PS3 or Xbox 360, or waiting for 64-bit Vista support to dive in? PlayOn CTO David Karlton updated the official blog to let users know fixes and additional support is in the works, so keep an eye out for more news shortly if things aren't working just yet.

Good news, but when is coming out?
It's already out.
The software is available now. they took it down from the site for a new hours last night since many people were running into streaming errors. Now it's fixed and ready to go. I've been reading through a lot of the comments here and was surprised to see how immature many of them are. The software is in Beta which means it is still being worked on to get better performance and add more support for more devices. They are working on adding MAC and Linux support and are planning on adding the Wii as well. It takes time!
No one should be complaining about "I wish SONY would add support for this or that rather than getting this crap" First off, this is not SONY doing anything. This is a third part provider offering their services to make your life and gaming system a bit better. they are using a feature on the PS3 and 360 that have been available for more than a years now. SONY, Microsoft, nor anyone else is devoting any time to this that would take away from developing new games.
MediaMall's other softare "ActiveTV" supports media content from more than 20 internet sites. I'm sure in time they will add the same support for PlayOn and I'm sure HD support for Hulu videos will be available in time as well.
If someone gives you a free lunch, do you complain that its not exactly what you wanted? If you don't want it, don't use it. And above all, don't complain.
Seems like it's more economical to just pay for XBL Gold.
Not if you only have a PS3!
Obviously I was talking about the people with Xbox 360s. When I mention XBL, why is a comment about a PS3 even needed? Do you think before you post?
It could be because all the pictures above are from the PS3... and it was mentioned in the story...
I happened to read the story, which mention the 360, and I happened to be talking about that part.
I didn't think "Ooh pretty pictures. That must be all the article is about".
too bad SONY continues to make GUI enhancements while the system has a tremendous lack of original games.
It takes owning a PS3 and an Xbox360 to actually realize what you aren't missing by owning one.
here, I'll correct your error: too bad MICROSOFT continues to make GUI enhancements while the system has a tremendous lack of original games.
Hmm... here.. I will correct both your errors.. too bad NINTENDO continues to make GUI enhancements while system has a tremendous lack of original games
problem solved
Here's my point of view: Too bad ALL of the console makers focus on GUI enhancements when all of their consoles have a 1:1,000,000 original game ratio.
um lack of Games let me list Some games that are out and coming out for you Little BIg planet MGS4 Resistance 2 Socom MotorStorm pacific Rift i can go on..
too bad xbox360 is loud as hell, broke down once a month. otherwise i woulda bought one. yes, i know they fixed the heating issue but its still loud!
As I said on a sister site: I would much prefer that the PS3 browser got a new version of flash that supported sites like Hulu.
I second that sentiment... I love Hulu and was mighy disappointed when I realized I couldn't watch it through my ps3 :-/
Aw, is that why SurfTheChannel yelled at me for going there with the PS3?
Bugger :\
Yeah, definitely needs STC support for me to buy.
I think you need to bug Adobe about that. Last I hear, they don't offer an embedded version of the latest flash player.
Sweet! i recently had to replace my motherboard and have had not been able to re-connect my PS3 to my Windows Media server (stupid Vista keeps poping up about the service not working..) any ways i am sure i will be able to find a free version of Hulu or something that works just as well with out having to pay..
The PlayOn software does not support Vista 64bit.
Found that out too. WTH?
On their blog they say a 64bit version will be released in a couple days.
So Why can't you get HD video!?
In my queue I have several programs including a few from the HD Gallery. In the Queue screen there is an RSS button which subscribe to so I can see if a new episode of my favorite show has been added.
When I click on a show it opens it up in the proper format (480p for most shows and 720p for the HD)
If this just streams RSS fed flash video then it should work just fine... Albeit slower because of the larger file size
Come on, wii support!
I'm really curious as to how they plan on implimenting a Wii version of the software (unless they take the homebrew route).
I think it would be cooler to just implement a wiimote hack for your console of choice.
And if your console of choice happens to be the Wii? =U
Well, i'm running it right now and all hulu videos come up as unsupported on my 360. balls.
Woh, at first I didn't see the period there.
I'm having the same problem. Anyone figure out a workaround? Is this an XBox problem or a PlayOn problem?
same problem
everything is free

Tversity does not support HULU... when I am back at home, I will try this thing, if it does support HULU, it will be great...
I'm thinking MythTV with mythweb access from your console's browser.
this all sounds like a myth.....
"The folder could not be accessed. This content may have been deleted from the media server."
Yay. I can see the channels, I can see the shows with thumbnails, but when I play them it says it cant access the folder.
Same for me. "Folder could not be accessed." I was thinking it might be my antivirus (Avira), but no dice even with "Guard" disabled on it. Anyone have any luck on a PS3?
there is no friggin way hulu lets this go if more than 100,000 people start using it.
I got the same "Folder could not be accessed...." on my PS3. I emailed MediaMall support but haven't heard back yet.
Tversity doesn't support Hulu.
Of course they would have to charge. I guess I'll just stick to a PC connected to my TV to get Hulu & Netflix for free. Gee - I'm so heartbroken, really. Considering I would need a PC anyway for this to work, I mean that DVI to HDMI cable is just SOOOO expensive and that toslink cable gives me heartburn. Oh God PlayOn can you overcharge me to save me the pain? SRSLY, WTF?
THis junk doesn't even work on 360. I could only get Hulu working. All the other videos like ESPN, CNN, etc.... not supported error. LAME!!
gay doesn't work on 64bit :(
It works great on my PS3. My 360, however, it's a different story.
If they can get the 360 and Netflix rolling, I might buy it.
For those Mac users on here, we're out of luck. Being a Hulu fan, I was excited. Unfortunately, the program is required to run on either XP or Vista, then streamed to your PS3 or XBox 360. And before I get flamesprayed by those who say "No $?!+", spare me. This is for those who clearly aren't as endowed with networking knowledge as you are.
Installed it, and I've been watching videos on my 360 for the last 3 hours. I love it. I hope the project continues and I'll happily pay for a more feature-rich version.
It works on Vista 64, you just have to wait a bit
Just got a fixed beta for the PlayOn "Folder could not be accessed...." problem. For anyone who needs the link: http://www.themediamall.com/playonbeta2008 . Mine is working fine now. :)
After testing the new version on my 360, I'd have to say that this is awesome software :) So much content and its easily accessible.
It also works on the Xbox Media Center (XBMC) for modded xboxes. Heres how to get it on XBMC: http://xbmc.org/wiki/index.php?title=UPnP_Sharing#Setting_up_UPnP_Shares_in_XBMC
