Sony gets official with PSP-3000
It's not like Sony could really keep this thing under wraps for much longer, but the company finally did the deed by announcing the PSP-3000 at the Leipzig Games Convention. The unit itself will look exactly like the PSP-2000, though it will feature an "improved screen that's better outside with no glare and a built-in mic." The juicy tidbits have yet to surface, but we are told to expect the new handheld in Europe for €199 ($291) on October 15th.

Um..yippie
My Thoughts exactly, this is more of a PSP- 2001 really.
Things that should be in the PSP 4000
#1 dual analog sticks
#2 vibration via the use of two small actuators (as small as the ones in iPhone or RazrV3)
#3 Skype (already in the 2000)
#4 built in mic so we can hold it to our heads for VoiP calls
#5 keyboard attachment capability (sold seperately).
Actually, all this shoulda been in the 3000
>>My Thoughts exactly, this is more of a PSP- 2001 really.
2000 vs 3000 is only really a model number. The PS1 and PS2 went through several serial number variations with seemingly minor upgrades in between (I think the current PS2 model is SCPH-7000). Personally I wouldn't have expected the PSP to add things like touchscreen or 2nd analog stick to the PSP since it would change game comparability with older models; meaning that current PSP users would be forced to upgrade to be able to play games the utilize touchscreen etc. Perhaps in the PSP2. . .
The screen is a lot better, especially in sunlight, and the built-in mic should make Skpe calls easy, PS button, and the D-pad and buttons seem to be more profiled with the concave indentation in the middle. It seems to be a nice enough upgrade without an increase in price.
Yawn. How about dual analog sticks? Tilt sensors? GPS out of the box w/Touchscreen? Built-in Camera? oh well, back to my Atari Lynx.
@Blaine
I really hope it's not a PSP-2001 (even though technically it is) or PSP-2008... otherwise we might end up like some other netbook company and have a PSP-2001XLite5.0 among fifty other color shades and memory options . . .
The psp-2001 does actually exist, it's the starwars special edition, and i happen to have one (yippee for me!)
For all you whiney b****es who can't see, look right next to "PSP" on the bottom of PSP.
See that little hole?
What do you think that is?
A mic.
Now you can hold it up next to your empty head and talk to people w/ VoIP
Midknight:
:D
Find a mate that has a regular PSP Slim, not Star Wars. It will say 2001.
All PSPs purchased from retail stores in the US will say 2001. It's model number 2000 with the region number 1. Japan will have a different one, as will Europe.
So no, this isn't like a PSP 2001, because that already exists, and it's not just the Star Wars editions.
Maybe a 2000.1? :)
It baffles me when people add loads of new features to the PSP..
Why would you want dual analogue sticks AND a touchscreen? One, the interface would be stupidly cluttered as if it wasn't bad enough already. Two, the analogue stick - no offense to you PSP fans- sucks balls compared to normal control pad ones. Three, a touch screen and analogue sticks as well as a D-Pad would be basically useless, developers would be driven mad trying to make use of all three without really pissing the user off.
Built in GPS, yeah nice idea, but it's probably unneeded extra cost - realistically it's not going to be a good quality one they shove in there and it would be poorly used by games. Since homebrew isn't exactly a piece of cake on the PSP, better off just leaving it in Go Explore.
Yes, they would be fun features, but the PSP isn't the right platform to put them on. You should be asking Sony to release a new handheld, not keep flogging a dead horse. The number of games for the PSP is already pretty dwindling, with the odd amazing release amongst few others, so why keep pushing it? They'd be better off just making a new console.
The PS2 upgrades i can relate to - i think it's good how they've actually done something worthwhile, no power brick is very cool given the no size difference. But the PSP is just getting to be a diluted product.
Time to update, SONY.
Better screen - nice, Mic - ok, location location location. I agree the sticks would not be worth it. But face it this is, more or less, a PSP 200x. Kudo's for saving battery consumption - extra 20 minutes. In 2006 the plans were to have a built in camera, now in 2009 you will be able to get the add on for $40 - $50 bucks and the add on GPS for about the same...little more. Yes they could have added the camera and the vibration. It's not like they cant they have plenty of cell phones that have the feature. A touch screen would have been excellent. Hummmmmmm camera, vibration, touch screen, mic. OMG a Sony version of the IPhone......let the PSPhone rumors fly again LOL Wonder if it will be next to the Zunephone and a Unicorn.
Gah!!! I just bought the 2000. When's this available?
Your not alone.
The post said October 15th. I guess you're impetuous with your posting along with gadget buying.
Awesome! Very Fartworthy!!!!
How would you react to a second analog stick?
^ I would shit my pants.
Maybe they finally figured out how to put a scratch resistant glass screen. Or maybe a touch screen... hmmm.
How about SD card support. lol
oh wouldn't that be nice. Too bad sony has to be a major pain in the a** and use all this crap proprietary cards and cables. I had to buy a 1gb micro memory stick for 20bucks. If they all weren't dicks and used micro sd I could have gotten a card 8 times the size for the same price.
This is the same argument everyone has every time someone mentions sony's memory stick. Almost word for word.
The Memory Stick isn't that expensive, anymore. 4GB for $40, 8GB for $60. Circuit City has the 1GB yellow clear SanDisk ones for $9.99.
This is a mild hardware rev. Sony's not passing it off as a 'PSP 2' or anything of the sort. Still, trolls and blogskanks predictably find their readily-proffered reasons to dismiss the PSP, regardless of improvements. Been that way since 2004, so in that sense the model numbers are irrelevant. Nintendophiles and Sony bashers will never be satisfied. Failing anything of substance to criticize, they'll concoct imaginary nonsense about Sony returning the device to a $300 price point. Yeah, sure. OK.
Lynx was definitely cool, though. Too bad the Tramiels sucked. In many ways, Sony has mirrored their apathy with the PSP, especially in how they're (mis)handling the USA market. Alas. Good hardware frequently gets left out in the proverbial cold.
i'm still sticking with my old PSP 1000 :P
You're not alone. ;)
Yeah the PSP-1000 is still the best one out there to run Homebrew, which we don't even know if this one can or will be able to hacked cause me thinks that with the new hardware (although minimalistic) there may be a new revision of the motherboard which may or may not be able to be hacked.
am this compeetlie silvr?
if it am slvr then it prbly is reely $$
but i dont thinck tht the insiyd cumponints r slvr
;)
what the fuck dude?! can you spell at all?!!
Looking at your comment history, you must have done a lot of drugs between May and June.
Can you please stop speaking like this? It's scaring my kids. Mewtard...
What?
What the hell is "Cumponints" sounds dirty to me.
What the fuck? You don't even deserve to own a PSP. Go to school first. Dumbass
Damn! You really are the dumbest of dumb shits. Everybody, look at his comment history! I just know this guy went to Oxford.
ugh Sony move on from this failure and make a psp 2 already!
A mic? :LOL
Make more games too.
you low ranked gabe... pfft..
please... sony was pumping out more firmware updates than the growth rate of P.R.o.China, because they kept getting slapped in the face every week with dark alexs' cfu's. Now, ?! they've turned on the hardware; and in this iterations, they've added a mic. well congradulations. be sure to watch the launch party.
Listen sony, add a real feature like multi touch, motion sense, and for phuk sake a 2nd analog stick.
BUILT IN MIC?? THIS CALLS FOR A CELEBRATION!!!
Seriously, why release this new rev? The only real reason I can think is to stem homebrew a little bit. (The psp-2000 doesn't have full homebrew capability)
No second thumbstick, no buy.
y u no by?
its slvr
slvr=kewl
;)
Yes, Pat. I'd like to but a vowel please.
scratch that... a LOT of them.
What is with all these people complaining about a second thumbstick? It would only get in the way... and if you've ever held a handheld gaming console, you would notice that they are held way differently than a standard controller...
Jesus God Almighty man, look at that bunch over there. They've spotted us!
Without some major improvements this is a waste of effort by Sony. They need 2nd analog stick, built in HD, and possibly even a touchscreen. Get rid of the worthless UMD and come up with some kind of store to download games, apps and movies directly from the PSP. Maybe then I would consider replaces my original PSP.
If you get all of these from SONY
It is no longer the SONY
Absolutely, I've stuck with my PSP-1000 as the later revisions haven't had any worthy enough features to give me reason to buy another PSP. Features like the ones you have mentioned most likely would.
is it me or engadget updated that pic? hahaha
It went from silver to black, so no, you're not trippin.
Well, the mic is in an awful place to use this as a Skype phone.
Why doesn't Sony just stop improving the psp and make the psp2 of psp phone?
Go original PSP
awww wtf?!
teh othr pic wus slvr!
y u chaneg it 2 black engadget?!
u suckkkkssss
D:
this "kid" i'm assuming is a fucking retard.... oops.. i guess i meant to say ... "hist "keed" eym azzuumean eez e fawkeen ritaed... yeah.. that's it
In may this guy could spell "overwhelming" and "speculation" correctly and put them into complete sentences. What happened??
he probably hit his head... with a sledgehammer...
The kid's harmless.
Sometimes he's funny, most of the time he's not.
But at the end of the day this latest version of the PSP is incredibly underwhelming.
This better not go for $300 in the US.
If anything it should be cheaper than the last generation. Especially with that terrible feature set.
I noticed that too... very surprised that nobody else has commented on the fact that this will supposedly cost ~$130 more.
Hmmm... No inbuilt cam either.
Slot loading UMD?
Juicy bits? Me thinks it has something to do with some sort of TV functionality, but not PlayTV.
$291 = £145 and you can buy a PSP-2000 for £130. Isn't a console supposed to get cheaper and not more expensive?
Sony has concentrated their efforts into killing the homebrewing community, which everyone knows it's what has kept the PSP alive, rather than improving the unit. They've made it cheaper to manufacture, which works great for Sony. But, I think the 1000 was better built.
I must agree with the PSP 1000 comment. That thing was just quality. It looked expensive and felt expensive.
Don't fix analogue stick...........................................................Check
Don't add 2nd analogue stick...................................................Check
Don't make it a touchscreen.....................................................Check
So basically don't change controls that developers hate..............Check
And no SD card support please................................................Check
I'm guessing a certain Sony executive needs to be fired for being too creative.
They cant do a lot of that without coming out with a completely new system (which isn't due for a while). If they jsut added, say, an analogue stick, they'd be stuck in MS's position where some users have something (HDD in their case) and some dont.
If they changed too much at once and offered it at the same price, that wouldn't exactly be a smart business move. They are still selling tons of units every week.
Also, I'm sure most PSP owners would be upset rather than happy to buy a newer, much better version of the PSP with all the features you mentioned.
the only thing that i want it to change is to add a second analog stick. the other reasons I don't really agree with; a SD card slot? it has a MS slot, what's the difference besides it being incompatible. not enough difference for me.
touchscreen? why? some of the best DS games doesn't even use the touchscreen. (mario kart, new super mario bros, advanced wars-which plays better with buttons for me) so a touchscreen is not a must have; besides, gaming feels more genuine with button mashing
Alright but we need to know this is a version THREE. Usually, a big improvement is expected in a third handheld. For instance, after the DS and the DS-lite, I doubt the next Nintendo handheld will feature an upgrade as subtle as the PSP-3000.
A second analogue would have gone a long way.
A touchscreen makes strategy games playable.... to mention one use.
Ditto.
Why would anyone want to buy/upgrade to this? It reminds me of EA Sports games which would out with minor improvements every year (whats the point of releasing something that's half baked. Konami please dont screw up PES 2009!).
Its gonna be an EPIC FAIL.
P.S: I'm happy with my phat PSP.
The new screen isn't just anti-glare. The playstation blog says it will have higher contrast than previous screens.
It will be selling at the current price of $199.99 for the bundle and $169.99 for the core package.
i always thought the mic on a portable gaming system is a terrible idea.
People started to look at me weird while i was yelling colors at the DS in Brain Age. Or when i was blowing at the DS playing Mario Party.
Actually, anyone talking in pubic short of holding a phone just looks plain weird. Even with bluetooth or headset.
Try blowing into the mic and see the reactions you get. People are like "WTF???"
Well I like on what they did on the back part.
But yeah, it's just a minor change from the PSP-2000.
Not as big as the change from PSP-1000 to PSP-2000.
so um, which is the on that can play all the pirated games?
What Does the "PS Button" do?
(Sorry.. Last thing I had was a ps2)
They just replaced the "HOME" Button. Probably same functionality as well.
Although they might have implemented the in-game XMB in the PSP too.
Home button
I hope to see a price drop in the 2000.
this has always bothered me, but why on earth is there no link to the article from gallery of the article? it's almost as annoying as the comment system tweaks.
Seriously... as it looks right now the psp 3000 looks like it will
deliver the exact same game experience... why couldnt sony have given
us in this new edition, new hardware:
draft n wifi
A second analogue stick (for a better gaming experience)
A webcam (that would allow the gamer to make stupid videos, or
stills, be it shit quality)
The ability to be more open in movie formats to destroy other PMPs
for sale on the market now (even thou this is software, divx support
is needed, etc)
Vibration
Bluetooth (transfering files to other devices such as mobile,
bluetooth headsets, etc)
possible accelorometer ( as its all the crazy at the minute, bit far
fetched maybe?)
Basic touch screen (to navigate through menus not game play, giving a
new user experience)
, bit far fetched
Even if final cost was a little more, at least with the new changes
people would see the justification of purchasing a new psp
Im a loyal PSP fan, but sony has seriously taken the biscuit with
this crappy new edition... soo not impressed.
Same old crappy D-Pad huh? I'll pass.
Okay, this thing sucks, and here's why:
No Bluetooth
No wifi N
No touchscreen
No second analog stick
No SD card slots
No accelerometer
No clamshell design
No ability to play DS games
No keyboard
No mouse
No TV tuner
No built in laser rifle
No ability to turn into a car
No George Foreman grill functionality
I mean seriously, Sony, wtf? W. T. F.
It is still a PSP so it has to remain a PSP. Giving it a mic and a better screen amkes it a new model. Giving it a touchscreen, 2nd analog stick, and removing UMD makes it a new system.
The PSP is selling like crazy in Japan and doing pretty well everywhere else.
No Homebrew/ Pandora! No Buy, i hated to see my old precious psp 1000 break down, though i'm not a pirate, i did enjoy placing all my old games snes, sega, etc and carry them with them everywhere. If there is no method of enabling this psp with homebrew, it's not worth it for me, and oh yes a second analog stick would be very sweet.
I completely agree with the people talking about the 1000 series PSPs, they are still the best iterations in my opinion. I had a chance to work with a 2000 series PSP and it just felt too fragile and too much like a toy, it simply came across as too cheap in my opinion. The 1000 feels expensive, looks expensive, and just seems to show a certain degree of quality and pride in itself. And yeah, Sony is all about trying to quash the CFW's on their handheld, which is easily the absolute worst idea they could possibly have. If it wasn't for the extended feature sets of the CFW's and the flexibility they offer, the PSP would be trying to catch up to the N-Gage's success right now.
I bought my 1000 series on launch day, with an out of the box firmware of 1.50 and as soon as I learned about Kxploit and what could be done with homebrew, I gave my DS Phat to my wife. I now rock 4.01 M-33 and it's pure bliss. I've even gotten offers from people to buy my PSP for outrageous amounts when they see what I can do with it, one guy offered me $400 on the spot.
I'd like to see Sony try to charge $400 for the 3000 series PSPs, people would burn their corporate offices down.
As for the "new" features of the 3000 series, not only is that a terribly lame showing, but it doesn't even accomplish the mission of Sony trying to draw attention away from their quest against homebrew by adding specious features such as TV out (WTF, seriously? What good is that? So I can transform it into a non-handheld?) a different place for the speakers, or a pop-open UMD drive.
Hell, I remember when console manufacturers made one console and left it at that, because they got it right the FIRST time!
As for the 3000, I'm sure that when it debuts, Sony will attempt to champion it as the new must have PSP and will attempt to downplay the fact it will most likely have some sort of new protection against unsigned code, which will be promptly broken by Dark Alex.
People, I know this is a tall order, but try to think. The new PSP isn't going to cost USA buyers $300. $199 in a combo pack, maybe. The PSP-2000 didn't wind up costing more after a few weeks, either. Just because the Euro has walked all over the Dollar lately doesn't mean Sony is going to suddenly bump us back to 2005 pricing.
As for the people slamming the PSP-2000, yes, it's lighter. That doesn't make it feels cheaper. It IS cheaper, and that DOES show in other ways, like light leakage around the display and easily scuffed paint compared to the lush lacquered build of the 1000. But weight ain't quality - as the DS -LITE- showed us. The 2000 is a better system in every way except paint and light leaks. TV output may not interest some, but it's an added feature. I for one LIKE having the ability to link my PSP to a video projector and use it as a portable bigscreen game/media device. UMD and video output is actually pretty good, too.
If Sony *didn't* combat CFW, even more developers would be bailing because, let's face it, CFW opens the piracy door. I don't buy the whole 'piracy has killed PSP software sales' argument, but industry bean counters will advise corporate dipsh... I mean executives, to walk away from the PSP (and have) if it's considered an undefended open platform. Sony has made every effort to blame their failures in the USA market on piracy and with CFW still out there, it's hard to refute them.
Wake up, people. A little common sense. I know it's a blog and all, but c'mon.
Hmmm.... that's it?
wht's so amazing that Sony requested FCC to keep the features confidential?
i was planning to buy a new psp... bt sony, give me one good reason :-/
For you guys that are saying that price is going to be higher I would like to talk to you about pricing in the PAL regions.
Over here in Europe and Australia we get slugged with huge surcharges that mean we pay a damn decent amount more than you guys do.
The have done a direct conversion of the amount in euros into American dollars which doesn't include the fact that the european porice includes about $50 US extra on top for absolutely no bloody reason.
So don't worry it won't cost you guys any more than the current PSP does.
ok...LCD improvement for outdoor use and built-in mic....
How about full screen TV out?!
nice! I think it's about time I upgrade my PSP-1000.
Gamasutra has more details on the release plans and bundle packs:
http://www.gamasutra.com/php-bin/news_index.php?story=19929
The Ratchet and Clank: Size Matters bundle sounds pretty nice.
Does the Pandora battery still work? If this thing breaks Pandora, which is more than likely (considering there are already versions of the 2000 the break it) it will be a very sad day for PSP.
Oh well... I guess its time to start hacking again!
They need a whole new handheld system or a complete revamp of the existing one.
Nice that they're getting rid of that glossy display, but that was sheer stupidity on a handheld system in the first place. Other than that, not much improvement really.
- How about a system with a solid 8-20gb of storage? Pherhaps make it touch screen and give it a proper browser, that way you'd have something that could rival the Iphone in terms of a multimedia browser. Dual analogs, r1 and r2 buttons, those are all welcome additions. A freaking foldable display would be ace aswell and preferably with a finish that isn't glossy so that you get your fingerprints all over it. THEN if you like, do toss in some better system specs.
That'd justify the upped price. Right now it seems like they're gonna ship out a piece of garbage again.
Pls let me know what is PSP 3000. Is this the latest PSP? Can it be connected to a TV or PC screen to play games?
http://ashopping.biz/
I'm waiting for a faster processor... There are cell phones on the market with faster processors. A better screen and more memory is nice.
YEA PSP-1000!!!
to bad i replaced mine 3x when i first got it before i was happy, now its near perfection.
Anyone want to pay $300 bucks for a brighter screen and a badly placed mike for skype?...not me.
the real only way to make the screen better is to make it scratch resistant. if they won't do that, i'm not sold.
I am very excited after knowing that the PSP 3000 can be used with the non-progressive scan televisions.
http://www.ashopping.biz/
I wish it had accelerometers and stuff like the iPhone. I mean, since iPhone has it. I demand its adoption in mainstream gaming devices like PSP.
What do you think ?
A second thumbstick opposite the current one would result in a really uncomfortable grip. They'd have to move the sticks around or change the basic shape for it to feel comfy. Grab your PSP and try to estimate that kind of grip.
SD card would be great. Motion sensing would be great.
I'm a noob to the technical side, but could added vibration features cause the UMD to skip? (like jogging with a discman in 1990)
since it has a mic..i bet its a psp-phone or ps-phone or or pspp or psp..whatever....!
