Sony reveals Uncharted: Drake's Fortune 160GB PlayStation 3, starts shipping new 80GB model
Well, color us surprised! Here we have yet another "limited edition" PlayStation 3 bundle, this time with Uncharted: Drake's Fortune packed in alongside a PlayStation Network voucher for PAIN, a DualShock 3 wireless controller and... a 160GB PS3 console? Yep, Sony's formally introducing us to the new king, which will start shipping to North America this November in the aforementioned kit for $499.99. Curiously, there's no word as to whether it'll be released separate from the bundle (we're guessing yes), and there's no mention of PS2 backwards compatibility (so don't count on it). In related news, the "new" $399.99 80GB version is finally shipping to retailers, so you should be able to snap one up in the very, very near future.

So does anyone know how much power these suck up or is it still the 170ish watts like the previous models?
I want to get my first PS3 but witth all these new ones coming out i dont know what to get, i was thinking about getting the 80gb which is about to be released, all i really want to do is play Madden 09, NBA 2k9 (when it comes out), Call of Duty 4, and some grand theft auto game, i would also like to download a few movies from the network, but im not sure the 80gb is enough?
Im clueless to alot of the terminology as well, whats a 65nm chip, what are SD games, whats BC stand for?
I have no clue on any of these things and need alot of help??
ANY SUGGESTIONS???
80GB is more than enough for a few games and a few movies. I have about 10 disc games with data installed for all, several movie/game trailers, 4 or 5 movies, a few PSN games, and a couple of hundred mp3s on my 80GB and I still have ~30GB free.
XXnm is the size of the chip, it's a metric measurement. People are mostly concerned with less power, less heat.
SD stands for Standard Definition. (i.e. Ps1, Ps2, Xbox, etc.. as opposed to high def (Ps3, Xbox 360))
BC stands for backwards compatibility (the ability to play Ps1 and Ps2 games on a Ps3 console).
Stupid sexy PlayStation 3...
Feels like I'm playing nothing at all
Nothing at all
NOTHING AT ALL
Maybe old news to some, but the in-store demo units have had 160 GB drives for a good long while now.

Could someone tell me why backwards compatibility is so important at this point. I have a wii and a ps2 and I will be joining the ps3 ranks soon, but I haven't played a ps2 game in two years. Just seems like something people want without any real need. Doesn't everyone have a PS2 anyway?
I would guess that most do, some don't. I skipped the PS2 (and sold all my PS1 stuff after one year) and prefer the BC to use one less input, one less wall plug, and not have to buy extra controllers and memory cards. Investing in a PS2 would cost more than $129.
I wish today's generation of manufacturers would put more thought into providing better content and software instead of introducing more gadgets, gimmicks, and sku's. I do understand the need for more storage space but what is the point if the content that will be on that storage space comes from my own imported collection of media. With this announcement I didn't see any information on what exclusive content we can look forward to stuffing that hard drive with.
Will there be a price drop on the 40GB if so how much do you think?
Here we go again, more BC-bitching.
Srsly, the PS3 doesn't need BC.
If you have PS2 games and a PS2, go play with it instead.
PS3 should just play Blu-Ray Discs for Games anyway.
I see BC (still!) seems to be a big hang up for many of you, but it looks like you are going to have to deal with it. These same BC complaints came up through all the non-Gameboy Nintendo incarnations until the Wii, but people stopped complaining and got on board. You are missing out on a lot of good things on the PS3 and this comes from a gamer who has owned and been playing videogames since the NIXON administration. I'm glad I didn't have to pay for BC because I have a PS2 already. Who says you HAVE to pay $130 if your PS2 dies? Hit up your local pawn shop-with this shaky economy, they have plenty (BC PS3s also). Two weeks ago, I picked up 2 working PS2 Phats for the princely sum of $23 total at one of the local flea markets. Saw a Slim out there for $15, but passed on it. Some of my friends run the "no space, don't want to have it hooked up all the time, need to trade it in so I can upgrade" argument. I silently point to the dusty VCR, 5-disc CD changer, cassette deck sitting in their entertainment center, stacks of unopened or played once CDs and DVDs on their shelves, unworn clothing/sneakers in their closet. Kills the complaints instantly ;0) Just saying this situation isn't as dire as you think.
Sorry to burst your bubble in the words of SCEE President David Reeves -
"So what we’re going to do at the start of November is releasing a 160GB Limited Edition PS3. The configuration is exactly the same as the 80GB model, with double the size of the hard drive. It’s a limited amount and we want to see what the reaction of consumers is."
So for everyone waiting for backwards compatibility sorry to say the wait goes on.
This whole hard drive thing is getting annoying just get the 20gb PS3 and spend 50 quid on a 320gb hard drive and install yourself. That should solve all your storage needs!!
European gamers should boycott Sony.

Will the 160 gigger support SACD?
This is one of those comments where I actually get curious for just a second, and then I think "Holy shit, someone is actually looking for _______ format to be supported?" and I smile to myself.
For your sake, I hope it does. Just because you made me smile today.
I paid the cost for the MGS 4 80 gig version PS3 with bc because I never owned the PS2, but I new the PS2 games would still be fun and cheaper than the PS3 games. I was right. I love all the new PS3 games but most of them start around $30. I just picked up Midnight Club for the PS2 for only $ 9.99. A great game an still fun even if it is mabey 5 years old?. Everyone wants all the titles for there system they just cant afford it.BC helps keep the fun and the cost down.
I just see it as being pointless to have BC my PS2 days are over, after playing games that are "HD" how could you go back to playing Standard Definition games?? but to each his own.. I'm just waiting for September 1st Next -Gen Socom it's what i have been waiting for...
Marketing, $$$$$!
