Dell Mini Inspiron caught running Ubuntu in the wild

A look back on popular stories from today in a specific year.

Now that we've thrown 'em off the trail, use the form below to get in touch with the people at Engadget. Please fill in all of the required fields because they're required.
The function keys seem to be mapped in on the middle (A) row of the keyboard, I assume you will have to press the fn key next to the left ctrl key to use them, like on a mac laptops.
Shame about the "waste" of space between the screen and kb tho.
They should make these Linux laptops with 3 mouse buttons.
Why? Linux has an option to emulate a 3 button mouse with 2 buttons, just press both at once.
On a mouse that's doable, on a trackpad, no thanks.
More tease-ware with the latest Unobtanium 2 CPU. Just like the MSI Wind, Acer Aspire. Try buying one.
I have a joke, what's worse than a fugly Dell laptop?
A fugly Dell laptop running a fugly OS.
Oh wait, it's not a joke, this thing is fo real!
Should I send my N810 tablet back and wait for this to hit?
I dunno.
I'd send back the N810. I've got an N800 and I'm fairly disappointed in it. I'd rather have one of these netbooks. Don't get me wrong, I love the size of the N800 but it seems to be underpowered. Even browsing websites like Engadget is incredibly sluggish.
it's useless unless it has a normal o/s ... linux? really? ... no thanx
Ubuntu is not useless. And if you say something along the lines of 'it's useless unless it has a normal o/s' it just makes it blatantly obvious that the only o/s that you are familiar with is most likely Windows XP and mAAAAybe mac os x.
Try to keep an open mind - linux, especially ubuntu is a completely legitimate operating system and in almost every case runs far faster than any windows installation could ever dream of running.
yeah sorry buddy but you need to open your eyes and peak over that windows wall of yours. The field of linux is as pretty as it is productive.
My connections inside dell mentioned that the delay in an announcement date have more to do with a pending deal with Wal-Mart. From what I have been told, Wal-Mart may have snatched up the first 150K units. With an order like that, there are bound to be supply line issues to work on before they are available to the masses.
so? My Vostro 1500 runs Ubuntu. It's not that hard to do.
Only 1.0 GB of Available HDD???? weird.
Called Dell this just 5 minutes ago...
Mini Note Inspiron 910 is due out on September 4th, 2008
That would make a nice birthday present for myself. Would've been nicer if it came out today so I can get one sooner for class, which starts Monday. I don't suppose they gave you any word on pricing?
It looks really nice in the photo... but where is it?
Its 4pm EST - is it still supposed to launch today or when is it pushed to?
Having used my friend's eee (401 with 7" screen) for a week, my biggest curiosity on this Dell (or any mini-note) is how well the keyboard fits my hands + screen real estate. The eee was a great first entry, but actually using it is frustrating - I kept mistyping and when you open a blank document, there is barely enough space for a couple of lines before you have to scroll. For note taking in class, this is a big deal. I can live with a slightly slower cpu and performance, but the UI's and GUI need to be decent.
From the photos, the Dell looks like it will be usable... but I'd like to see somebody's actual review of it in use to tell. (I'm in Canada so I suspect we won't be able to order one for sometime after people elsewhere, and the price will be much higher)
Ah, Sept 4th... ok. Won't they miss the back-to-school hoardes that date?
Looking forward to seeing it. Or an HP 2133 equipped with a Nano cpu...
what is the panel with the big icons?
Yeah, definitely a waste of real estate around the keyboard. They could've easily added a row of function keys, even if they're the smaller/half sized keys. Ridiculous, but this is still my top choice since you can't add anymore ram to the S10's from Lenovo's site.
I for one am glad they are still testing it out. Yes, I want that laptop, but right now it looks F'ing ugly on the inside. Look at the Inspiron 13" and you will probably hope that dell makes that into a 10" - 8" laptop as well.
I hope people are just looking at a prototype that will change in design. It might change with new technology coming out too. Maybe a bigger flash drive. I think it looks nice on the outside, but ugly on the inside.
-blech!
Cool desktop.
I wonder if the pictures above and on www.dell-mini.com make the netbook justice? It looks kind of plastic but it's from Dell and the internals look good..
I wonder if we'll see a HP 2133 (looks amazing!) with better technology inside?
