OLPC achieves goal of One Laptop Per Child... on The Rock
One Laptop Per Child. That was the lofty goal set out by NickNeg before Intel ever dreamed of a Classmate PC. Today that goal was realized although perhaps on a smaller scale than the non-profit may have hoped. The tiny, South Pacific island nation of Niue (known locally as "The Rock") just issued a shiny new laptop to every sticky-fingered, primary and secondary school miscreant -- that's 500 in total for a island of 1,500 people. Seems, high-schoolers have been fitted with the freebie as well to go along with the free Internet access provided to all the island's inhabitants. Luxembourg, you paying attention?

Who gives a fuck if your first, you're last in my book!
jupiterthunder @ Aug 22nd 2008 12:24PM
You mean first one on the Rock to get it.
He was just trying to show us all that it wasn't going to waste.
avester @ Aug 22nd 2008 4:26AM
The Rock sounds like a prison.
turn_self_off @ Aug 22nd 2008 6:06AM
alcatraz perhaps?

The Rock is what we used to call Rikers Island when I was there. I didn't notice any free laptops
djbentley @ Aug 22nd 2008 4:26AM
Is this Nieus?
jassorno @ Aug 22nd 2008 4:41AM
I find that offensive. Luxembourg has almost half a million inhabitants!
Bender Bending Rodriguez @ Aug 22nd 2008 4:54AM
Incorrect, yes. Offensive, not even close.
Geert @ Aug 22nd 2008 5:43AM
And besides Luxemburg is one of the richest countries in the world, if it would be more like "one Vaio per child".....
obeygiant @ Aug 22nd 2008 5:48AM
... and remember: Luxembourg has the second biggest per-capita income in the world! So there is definitely no need for freebies ;-)
w4rh34rt @ Aug 22nd 2008 5:47AM
Haha.. Well, you've got to start somewhere!!
SOOPERGOOMAN @ Aug 22nd 2008 7:28AM
The Rock is actually the world renowned nickname for where I live.
Newfoundland Canada has been affectionately called THE ROCK for eons. So tell them people to STFU cause the nickname is ours. Where's my laptop?
p.s. Can you please for the love of fuck change back the login process. It's getting pretty fucking annoying. Just like those "FIRST" commenters. Kick in the rocks for him fo sure.
Bender Bending Rodriguez @ Aug 22nd 2008 8:21AM
1) It's actually referred to as "The Rock of Polynesia" or something like that, unlike your on Niue, then you just call it "The Rock". Since it's most likely there are very few Nieuvians(?) reading Engadget they should have referred to it as such.
2) The island is an exposed coral reef so I think they should have called it "The Reef."
3) I agree with the changing the login back to the way it was since it doesn't keep the setting of a returning user or my credentials it's a PITA.
YOO. @ Aug 22nd 2008 7:56AM
I prefer the NES pc.
BirdofPrey @ Aug 22nd 2008 8:02AM
When do WE get a one laptop per student deal?
O wait thats right the taxpayers don't actually give a damn about education here.
avester @ Aug 22nd 2008 8:59AM
No, it's just that you can pay 500$ for a laptop if you need one.
Jake @ Aug 22nd 2008 11:00AM
I expected to see something along the lines of a certain ex-professional wrestler handing out some laptops, co-branded with the WW* "scratch" logo.
* Added to represent the F in World Wrestling Federation, because saying the full name is legal according to the panda bear hugging hippies, but the initials belong to the hippie bamboo munchers, and because of that, I refuse to use the initials WWE, when referring to "The Revolutionary Force in Sports-Entertainment"
Yatesey @ Aug 22nd 2008 12:56PM
Im always on engadget reading daily but I never login, but because of the S**T that comes from your mouth I have logged in just to say;
STFU
