Looks top heavy. But honestly, I don't care; iPods are just iPods. Nothing epic ever really changes and makes me want one. The firmware on the device itself is ugly and annoying to use, and the computer software is the same.
I'd rather see the iPod get away from its plain and simple style, and see a colorful and exciting new iPod.
I love my Zune to death, but I'm sick of seeing the boring look of the iPod.
You're going to get down voted only because any mention of a DAP other than the iPod in an Apple post is heresy. I'd personally love to see a capacitive multi-touch based Zune come out. Competition will get these companies moving, besides "touch screens" there hasn't been any huge innovations in years.
It's funny that you mention capacitive touch screens.
Did you ever think of how the Mighty Mouse knew which side of the mouse you had your finger on? Apple has been experimenting with making capacitive touch screens more affordable and rugged for years, slowing incorporating them into their products.
Oh and sorry if you wasted your time trying to find sarcasm in clak's post. He just posts hyperlinks a lot. Every one is either about the iPod touch or iPhone.
Honestly, I don't see the allure of the iPhone and iPod touch. I've seen plenty of other devices that are many times more useful than the iPhone, and no touch screen. Honestly, touch screens are exactly what I don't want to see in a device. I've never liked fingerprints on my devices so when I got a Moto KRZR (I think it's a piece of crap compared to my old Kyocera Slider Remix) I couldn't stand the smudges on the glossy finish, not to mention the screen. I imagine a touch screen device is 30x worse. What happens when you ruin the screen because it gets scratched or worn away? I just don't like touch screens; nothing beats tactile feedback.
Plus, I've used the iPod Touch. I wasn't impressed.
@ Dragod I'm glad we have so many different devices to fit so many needs. I'm curious what features in the Zune attracted you to it?
Regarding the screen, the only time you see fingerprints is when the screen is off. The screen is very bright and the optical quality glass is very dense so scratches don't occur like they do with plastics. That said, the Zune isn't a bad device at all, it's not preference as I wanted a to consolidate a PMP, MID and phone which the iPhone supplies, but if the Zune fits your needs go for it.
OK Dragod. Everyone is entitled to their opinion here. But you are saying you hate the ipod overall package and UI designs and love the Zune's. Yet the Zune's takes it's basic design from the ipod. The Zune also has a similar UI structure. The big difference is ipod does everything better then the Zune.
Am not saying ipod is the greatest, because I like the P2 and am also excited about the new Archos coming out. Really the only feature I look for in a portable player is bluetooth.
I must admit, I was taken in my the Zune's look. The doubleshot is so beautiful when it hits the right light. After that, it was my past experience with the iPod. I really don't like the scrollwheel and I hate staring at stark white screens. The Zune was different, and beautiful. Then after 2.x software it felt like we got the stupid features (Wireless sync? Useless to me) and the software had been dumbed down. I didn't even upgrade until 2.5 firmware.
Also, I mentioned my hate for scratches. I loved that the Zune is just about unscratchable with the exception of the screen and directional pad. That's why I was sad when the Zune 80 had the metal backing and lack of doubleshot... I must admit I'm not exactly happy with where Zune is going.
I'm inclined to say that the Zune might do a bit better if Microsoft released it outside of the US. The damned thing has been available for, what, 2-years now but only in the US and maybe Canada? iPods and just about everything else ship globally.
Oh, but if/when the Zune is released outside the US, can we buy media using normal money rather than silly Microsoft Points? Pretty please?
Now that we've thrown 'em off the trail, use the form below to get in touch with the people at Engadget. Please fill in all of the required fields because they're required.

@clak:
Oh you mean the gutted iPhone?
499 for less than half the space of a Zune 80 (or even the Classic 80) and only average audio quality compared to the Zune?
I must have missed the sarcasm in your comment.

@Ruben
Please don't argue with clak. Now he is going to reply with something and it's going to make everyone wish they were incapable of reading.
Welcome back clak! We missed you! (not)

Also, sorry if my posts are a little scattered. I'm feeling really out of it right now.
Even though clak somehow hasnt said anything annoying in this post i still down ranked him, just because of previous expriences.
For someone so unimpressed with the iPod, you sure do talk about it a lot.

and which one of those jackoffs are you clak?
"and which one of those jackoffs are you clak?"
Probably Bender Bending Rodriguez. Not as big of a fanboy, but a blind Apple fanboy for sure.
clak is back!

@Ruben: that's because the touch is flash memory based and the zune is hdd based. Don't hate the player cause he plays the game better than you.
@Bender

agreed. zune is the way to go.
You DO know the Zune 80 metal back is even harder to scratch than the plastic on the old one right?
I got mine because my Dell Dj died and I loved the Halo 3 Zune 30. After that I got the Zune 80 the day it came out!
