Philips' 8mm thin 32-inch LCD turns the screws on Sony

This morning you saw what a 9.9-mm thin LCD from Sony looks like. Now it's Philips' turn to drop jaw. Albeit just a concept compared to Sony's ZX1 soon to be production TV, this 8-mm thin, 32-inch LCD with LED backlighting is done with the engineering and now waits for the suits to bring it to market. Two thin strips of Philips' own LumiLEDs -- 30 on top and 30 on the bottom -- are the secret sauce to this thin, Full HD mixture. According to Philips' "Senior Scientist," Dr. Giovanni Cennini, this 8-mm design will scale to panel sizes of 42-inches and probably higher. Better yet, these are the same panels Philips already uses, no extra tweaking required. So it's your move corporate, we're all waiting.

sometimes I wonder whats the point of having a super-thin lcd panel, when you need the stand like this one. The connections seems to be on the base, so you can't really hang-it on a wall.

Less = more expensive, just look at women's clothing :)

It's always this way with new technology because the companies want to get their return on all the money they invested in R&D. Until it becomes main stream and everyone is making a 10mm - 8mm screen, the high price won't drop. Flat panel prices are keep drooping with each new, improved version that comes out. It's only a matter of time before thin flat panels follow suit.

but i'm of the instant-gratification generation. i dont read newspapers, i read blogs that release info nigh instantaneously. i have splashtop for instant on access to the web. i use a microwave for all of my meals, ranging from hot pockets to gourmet, e.g. lean cuisine or cat. i punched a hole in the bootom of my car so i could just piss while driving. tell me to wait? psssh.

They keep making these stupidly thin screens, but the actual products they sell in the stores are never actually that thin. They always have to put all sorts of other stuff in there like the power supply, the video input connectors and tuners, the built-in speakers, etc.

Why doesn't someone make a TV that has the thin display with all that other extra stuff in an external box connected by a single wire. It would make wiring a home theater a million times easier. It would make mounting the ultra-thin screen super easy. Basically everything would be better in every way.

Well it would be good but 1 big problem.

Lost box = useless TV.

Now I know that me and you wouldn't but I know plenty of people dumb enough to lose it. Its like with these silly Fujitsu PC monitors that are thin but use a silly 12v transformer with this proprietry connection.

I'm worried about thinner screens being more fragile. Even a solid metal frame, at 1/4" thick around a 40" screen size, would flex. I hope they are making the screens softer and more resilient to cracking when flexed, to compensate.

In the seventh picture it would appear that Philips attached a temporary cover to the back which has holes in it and light pouring out of them. Even the corners aren't sealed! Philips wanted to appear superior to Sony, and why not, but let's wait to measure Philips' monitor in its final form.

To be quite honest, as already pointed out, it does seem daft striving for ultra-thin screens if all the other electrical guff ends up in a base - however demure it may appear.

Really sexy, though. I love the exposed screws at the side, for some reason.
