MSI's Wind U90 to boast 8.9-inch display
Well, that took long enough, now didn't it? We've been hearing about an 8.9-inch MSI Wind for months now, but it has just now popped up on the outfit's website. The Wind U90 will pack an Atom N270 processor, built-in 1.3-megapixel webcam, stereo speakers, microphone, 802.11b/g WiFi, Bluetooth, 512MB or 1GB of DDR2 RAM, a 1,024 x 600 resolution panel, 80GB hard drive and a 4-in-1 card reader. Additionally, you'll find an Ethernet port, three USB 2.0 sockets, VGA out, a 3-cell battery (optional 6-cell available upon request) and a weight of 2.2-pounds. Your guess is as good as ours when it pricing / availability, but hey, we're just thrilled to know this thing is destined to be more than a trade show crasher.

Back to ugly drab plastic screen surrounds, well done MSI you just made a new design look like an EeePc 701
It's the same laptop with a smaller screen. They should have made it smaller like the EEE 900.
Your icon looks like it has a tracheotomy
512mb again? my god!!
"MSI's Wind U90 to boast 8.9-inch display"
And a 19-inch bezel.
Why even bother posting this crap? These computers' designs hail from 1994.
Bought one for my partner who's gone back to Uni and she loves it. We looked at all the alternatives and this one wins hands down for price/spec. Set it up with the Royal Noir theme and it's very perty. I'd say they got the size just right, any samller and the keyboard would be too squeezed. For portability where you don't need the kitchen sink these netbooks are perfecto.
I work for PC World over in the UK and have been told we will be stocking the Winds (badged as Advent) and there will be a model with built in HSDPA...
I bought an Advent 4211 (rebranded name for MSI Wind) last week in PC World.
using it right now. Perfect little computer. not too small, not too big and it can run OS X
Im really sick of these little notebooks showing up everyday now. engadget is a tech site not a toy shop
It's an emerging market, what do you expect?
All I see a lot of the time is Apple posts, or a load of posts about cameras. What do I do? Simply scroll past them. But posts like these I look at as i'm interested in these netbooks. It isn't hard.
Toy? I think not. I just purchased the Acer Aspire One with 120GB HD + Windows XP. I am a Mac guy with an Air, Macbook, and Macbook Pro. I am currently on a trip, and guess what...the Macbook Air stayed home this time. If this little gem would have been when I was looking for a smaller solution for travel, the Air would have never been purchased. 1800 vs 349.....umm, real hard decision. The only thing I miss is Leopard...but I have it on enough of my other machines

Yeah, sure. A six-cell battery. How much longer for this one to have that released?
(I realize there was a fire in the battery factory, but still, that only works as an excuse for so long.)
I'm actually looking forward to that one... till Dell eats up the market (isn't August almost over?)
I am trying to understand where this is news. All these netbooks are 8.9 or 10 or 7 or 11 inches.. running the same specs, the same OS choices, bla bla.. why not just create some matrices and list all the specs (repeatedly) so you dont have to create 50 posts a week about something that is ultimately mediocre.
There's SOOO MANY FUCKING NETBOOK MODELS that it'd be really helpful to have a comparative matrix for those in the market for a netbook. And it'd have to be updated like at least once a week.
I say Engadget should step up to the plate.
And Wikipedia provides: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_netbooks
As far as I can tell this uses the same casing as the U100. Why would I buy this instead of the 10" model then? I doubt it'll be priced that much lower, and the display can't have much impact on the weight either.
So MSI has an new excuse for not only being able to deliver the 10" Wind but also the new 8.9" display model.
Yay for crammed workspaces!
Pass. I already bought the last Wind, and it turns out the video and touchpad that came with my machine were worse than those in the display models they shipped. I'm not going to reward them for that with further business.
Or rather so they have another excuse for not being able to deliver 10" and the new 8.9" models.
The only advantage to having a smaller screen is if the case is made smaller to match. If it's the same case size you may as well take the larger screen. I know the resolution is the same, but as eye strain relief if for no other reason its got to be worth the extra 30-40 bucks.
Still what do I know. It seems to cost nothing to spit them out, if they sell they sell... if they don't they just move on to next weeks bright idea.
i for one wish for more display and less bezels.
YAY! More netbooks the better. They should have made the actual laptop smaller like the Eee PC 901 rather than add the bezel although it doesn't look that bad. Still why are more and more netbooks going back to HDD, I know its cheaper and has higher capacities but come on people we need to move forward.
It's now selling in the Philippines for $424 a piece: http://www.yugatech.com/blog/personal-computing/msi-wind-u90-sells-for-php19500/
It will be news of major proportions when somebody other than ASUS and HP actually has their supply chain ramped up enough to meet the demand for all of the new netbook variants that are being announced every other day. Is it just me, or do most netbooks qualify as near-vaporware? The original MSI Wind drifts in and out of stock at the few places that carry it, and it's almost impossible to find it with the 6-cell if you're not willing to pay a premium over the sticker price. Last time I checked it was tough to find anyone who's stocking the Acer Aspire One (at least the Windows XP model). If and when somebody is able to stock these things in decent numbers at reasonably low prices they will fly out the doors. Until then it's like shopping for PlayStations at Christmas time.
I Agree With The Other Guy It Does Look Like My Eee PC 701
but i like the 7inch screen better then the 8inch
The U90 is going to sell for around $399 in Canada or that would be $375 US. You can see for your self at http://www.expc.ca/i-7313-MSI_U90_BLACK.html
Much prefer the larger screen-ed one.
This is the reason I got the U100 10" over the Aspire One. They're almost the same size physically, so why wouldn't I want the largest screen possible in the same form factor?
Also, I LOVE my wind.
it has been selling for a while now by Italian cell carrier WIND (go figure), for 399 euros with a usb hsdpa dongle included.
I've been selling these in Australia for about 3-4 weeks now, they come in Black, Pink & White, they sell for $649.
