A functional Meizu M8 UI, CEO Jack Wong finally caught on video
After what feels like centuries of waiting (and suffering through that painful CeBIT demo), we finally get to see the Meizu M8's OS in action... and it's not as bad as you think. Sure, the interface is totally derivative of the iPhone, and there is that pesky cursor floating around, but all-in-all it looks like the company has managed to knock out a decent -- if incredibly familiar -- UI for its long-delayed phone. Still, there's some low rent hilarity in this video. Our favorites? The smattering of soft porn pictures and video, and Meizu CEO and all-around bon vivant Jack Wong revealed in a reflection... wearing a face mask! Check the clip after the break (and freeze frame of Mr. Wong).
Update: Despite our excitement about Jack Wong in a face mask, some readers have pointed out (and we agree) that it's actually the camera he's using to film the video.
[Thanks, Patrick P.]

Why so mysterious, Mr. Wong?
I would never ever buy one of these. Thus far, Chinese computer manufacturers have never invented an Operating System that I could trust. Just try using some of the chinese DAP's that pop up on our streets. when those things stop working, they STOP. No way to update them, no way to restore them. I trust apple and Microsoft simply because when/if things go wrong, there are support websites and support desks you can get results from. Whether its an RROD or an overheated Time Capsule.
Oh my god I just update my m6.
By the way, the os the m8 is winCE 6
Ugh... here we go again with Flashpoint's shit...
steven
Do you think I'm bothered by your lameness? Do you think I'm bothered by low rank buttons.
Well I've got one thing to say.
DO YOU RUN CRYSIS?
Flashpoint, you do talk a lot of crap.
But....
"DO YOU RUN CRYSIS?"
That was pure funny.
I would high five.
But i really dont want to.
Flashpoint, I have never laughed so hard at a comment. "Do you think I'm bothered by your lameness?". I'm gonna be using that a lot.
the fact that you replied to his insult indicates the contrary
I like how its only full of cute Asian chicks.
I'm not complaining though.
I'm glad you weren't complaining about liking that.
asian soft-core porn ftw!
Introducing the Meizu Cleavage Viewer.
whats with azns always into young school girl porn - PERVS!
@gabe: You into granny porn?
@Richard Lai
No but i'm not into child porn.
Yuko Ogura FTW!
http://www.yukoogura.org/
Gabe,
The model in the photos (Yuko Ogura) is 25. People in Japan in general eat very healthy food and many women protect themselves from the sun so that tends to make them age more "gracefully". There's nothing wrong with that in my book.
Yeah, I'm sure she's EXACTLY as old as they say she is. ...Just like those Olympians who were supposed to be 16 and turned out to be 12-13. Where money is involved China just turns their head. ...Don't forget, CHINA SUPPORTS GENERCIDE. Girls aren't worth shit there.
she isnt even chinese she is a jap you dumbass
Wow. Genercide. Is that where they kill all the generic people?
Still not impressed, but I will buy if it comes with the videos. ;]
Anybody know if it'll be easily available in the US?
FIRST TO COMMENT!!
First to fail......
Ahah, iPhone UI and Vista Wallpaper.... Nice!
Hey if anything that's Palm UI if you want to talk about the basic setup, now the animation flickery stuff that's would be apple but as you can see this does not flash too much like the iphone...
It looks like he's a pervert, he zooms up on her cleavage at :23
Well then I guess all guys are perverts, including me.
You must be extremely conservative to call someone looking at a clothed womans clevage perverted.
Me too!
Nah man,he had to zoom in just to notice them.
we'll the fact that she looks like a minor is another story
maybe she was at the olympics
ZING!...haha, indeed
That really does look pretty good. the volume slide seems too close to the playback controls, and there ae a few other nitpicks, but overall, it seems pretty snappy and functional.
Agree, but am i the only one bothered by this appearing to support multi touch in windows phone?
It's hard to reply directly to you. So I am ranking you DOWN by letting you know I am not bothered by this. Hoping ppl will rank you UP by agreeing with you.
am i the only one bothered by this appearing to support multi touch in windows phone?
iPhone UI, and Vista wallpapers, wow, this guy is asking for it...
I'm holding out until they port over Duke Nukem Forever. "Come get some", indeed.
love how he pinches and zooms in on the girl's breasts. Then, of course, he has to press his finger SOMEWHERE to show off the drag feature. Classy, eh.
Ok, One the first. Yeah, I noticed the cleavage zoom too. [They know how to catch attention]
A mask...? Smog problems, perhaps?
It's not a mask, it's the camera that is recording the video. Come on Engadget...
Wow, that guy sure has a lot of girl pics and vids! Look what he zooms on at 0:24.
Seems pretty smooth to me. I guess. Kind of like a strange mix of the iPhone and Windows Vista UI. It's even running on Windows CE 6. I wonder if they'll do a US release.
The US release will be eBay, chinadirect2u, and probably many, many more importers.
There are only two thing I want to know and they are how many video codec does it support and how long is the battery life?
I'd rather know WHICH video codecs are supported.
If it's like the M6, it will play many formats. Video Playback: AVI, MPEG-2, RM(VB), MPEG-4/H.263/H.264 at 30FPS
Why IS there a cursor? It's completely unnecessary, and looks really tacky.
It's extremely necessary... when you're running on top of Windows CE.
yeah the cursor is pretty funny.
I'm an iPhone 3G user and I love the iPhone UI, but I'll admit, this one of the best knockoff UI yet, they actually pulled it off pretty close.
Yeah, and he got ranked up.
Table for one, tomato soup, and a kick in the balls on its way.
And I say the iPhone is the best copy of the Qtopia mobile interface ever, right down to the sliding unlock widget.
Anyone else notice that the device in the video seems to be running some sort of Windows? Check the folder names when he's showing the copy/cut/paste or whatever it is he's doing. Seems to me Meizu have just made one hell of a UI on top of WinCE or some sort of WinMo, and I can't tell if I think that's a good or bad thing.
It will run on WindowsCE 6.0.
I pooped on your comment haha.
you can clearly hear someone hammering and sawing in the background. if thats their assembly line i want nothing to do with this product! lol
Clearly a sex offender.
Or just a normal guy who's straight (and a hornball)
@ least he's straight that's a good thing...
It has mms, good. I dont get the shady video tho. Also whats up with the bed in background and the whole face mask bit? I am starting to think this was a shady deal done in some sleezy motel lol. The hot asian girls make for a good distraction tho, i am starting to fall for it already...........
I think that 'face mask' is actually the camera he's using to record the footage, in front of his face, no?
Aahh... of course!
Wow this is just sad, a iphone Knockoff that will be price higher than the iPhone???? good luck with that, with all those patent Apple is holding am pretty sure this will only be available in china, maybe, remember Apple is not a flexible company that license patent's, they're so big now that they just rather put people out of commission
The Meizu is unlocked, so obviously the price is going to be higher. But the M8 is actually BETTER. 720x480 LCD, unlocked, removable battery, 667MHZ processor (the retail version might be 800MHZ, I am not sure), USB OTG, 3.0MP camera, Bluetooth 2.0 (not crippled like iPhone's), support for loads of formats. The same audio chipset as the Meizu M6, which is better than ANY iPod's sound quality. All this for less than $400.
That is one powerful device!
Good thing it comes with a removable battery then because this thing is gonna be flat in 5 minutes!
You show me one WinMo/WinCE device that'll browse for 6 hours with a standard (not fat extended) battery. They don't exist, and they all have lower specs!
Jack Wong has a fine taste.
This phone looks pretty hot and I am looking at this article from my iPhone 3G. I'm actually surprised they managed to hide so much of the Windows Mobile interface...I wonder if you can actually get back to it when you really need to use it.
Dude,if they can actually launch this,I would be very happy. And would most likely get one.
Dude,And I Would Get One Too.
dude, they're actually releasing this thing? I thought this was some sort of publicity stunt, so that they can release their real stuff with some sort of hype.
Nice OS though.
The iPod touch phone. We meet once again. Boo chrome outlining, go black!
Any update on the M7?
Name ANY device that does that.
"You show me one WinMo/WinCE device that'll browse for 6 hours with a standard (not fat extended) battery. They don't exist, and they all have lower specs!"
This plus the new winmo app store (http://news.cnet.com/8301-1035_3-10029731-94.html?part=rss&subj=news&tag=2547-1_3-0-5) should make for some ridiculous fanboy battles.
window ce \= not winmo
Oh.
pretty sure this device infringes on at least a few Apple patents (i believe the multitouch zoom is patented)
Patents, shmatents. We're talking China here, remember?
'Multi-touch' isn't patented by Apple, it's just that particular implementation of the technology that is patented.. You'll notice various other companies also used Multi-touch, including Microsoft and Asus. Infact, Microsoft Surface used the Multi-touch idea years before Apple. Not to mention, the original technology was not invented by Apple either. Just to set the record straight. :]
Eww, it's WinMo underneath the interface. And what's with the mouse cursor?
it's Windows CE.
Since when has pictures of fully clothed women and videos of girls in bikinis been considered softcore porn? How are those different from pictures of models you'd see in any mainstream magazine?
There is no difference, but interestingly, what was once considered to be soft porn is now all over the place, and therefore people are numb to it. They no longer think of it as porn because porn is just not something people think of as being displayed for all to see in public places. Well, it's there now. Cover your child's eyes, we're walking past a magazine "rack."
OMG didn't know Cosmopolitan, 17, Variety, Sports Illustrated S.I. and it's ilk were considered soft core. Then supermarkets shouldn't put such magazines out in check-out aisle it's not good for the general public.
As an iPhone owner, I have to say it IS a pretty impressive rip of the iPhone. Which I'm not going to bitch about. But I'm just curious, does anybody have a reliable ETA for this thing? As Joshua Topolsky wrote "After what feels like centuries of waiting . . ". And as else someone wrote back in the Jan 29th 2007 post "I think it is funny because Meizu was supposedly the "first" iphone clone and that is why it got its name... but to this day the have yet to release a phone..." So what's the word prognosticators?
Ya centuries of waiting because they are waiting for Apple to implement copy and paste so they can rip that off too, as Meizu is too LAZY to come up with their own sh!t.
At least all the other "iPhone killer" makers have the decency to at least not make theirs so blatantly a direct rip-off.
OMG JetStar you are a true dumbass. How many times do I need to post this?: The Meizu is unlocked, so obviously the price is going to be higher.
It IS an iPhone killer.
Why would anyone wanta rip off copy and paste? It's like a de facto standard of any 21st century OS.
Jetstar: Since M8 uses Win CE 6 as it's base and not Win Mo 6.1 it already supports copy and paste functions. I believe Windows Mobile 6 is built on top of Win CE 5 ver 5.2
At least Meizu is taking a bit of good ideas here and there from Vista and Iphone into the OS. They should license Songbird for M8 and that would make the M8 much better. IMHO.
it's pretty incredible piece of 'knockoff' that seem to take the iphone a step further with file transfers and file hierarchy, usable bluetooth, just to begin with...and the smattering of codecs that this thing should play (based on similar veined devices previously released), the m8 seems quite impressive and more 'open friendly' than the iphone. and did anyone notice that the response time after touching something seems just miliseconds faster than the iphone? if this device is/gets released, i'd go for it over the iphone. and unlocked/windows ce...wouldnt that just mean easier to hack and abuse, which we all love?
i disagree with you on almost every level.
Well then Jeff, please explain more.
Randy Gits...
You are fanboy? hahaha
Well I have to give Jack Wong some props for being blatant enough to demo his phone using somewhat pervy bikini pics and videos. It's not porn but I think he's pretty much just going after his target demographic without any shame.
I demand that more CEOs demo their new tech with pics and videos of cute japanese girls.
最后一段DV 感觉是 毛片。
For those perplexed by zygzs's comments in Chinese:
"That movieclip played near the end looks like pornography"
and I second that....
nice device though
....It "looks" like the iPhone, but it doesn't "work" like the iPhone. This thing is sluggish and non-responsive. And that problem can't be resolved with more CPU. I can tell it's being caused by poor multi-threading. Hopefully they'll fix this before release.
This is actually faster than the iPhone 3G. Yes, I have owned an iPhone 3G so I am not just pulling this out of my ass, unlike you.
@xconan
@ least he is not homophobic and that is a good thing.
How come there is so much hesitation in deciding what to demonstrate? There are palpable pauses between presses (not the response to the presses). Perhaps he forgot what the icons mean (or where the hard core was stashed)? Or perhaps just bad planning?
