Commodore hops on the netbook bandwagon with UMMD 8010/F

As we've seen countless times by now, the folks behind the Commodore brand will stop at nothing to keep the venerable name alive, and they've now finally hopped on the biggest bandwagon going, with the UMMD 8010/F marking the company's first foray into the netbook game. Unfortunately, apart from that familiar logo, there's not too much that stands out here, with the netbook packing a 10-inch screen, a 1.6GHz VIA C7-M processor, an 80GB hard drive, 1GB of RAM, built-in WiFi, and optional Bluetooth. The nearly $600 price tag also doesn't do it any favors, but we're guessing there's at least a few nostalgic folks out there that'll add one to their Commodore collection as soon as they're available.

Yeah, it's expensive for a netbook, but then again - it's a bit more than a netbook, with a full 80gb drive, etc. And it has that good old c64/vic-20 look. I'd have known the brand even without the logo on the front. Good job on a retro min-laptop, guys!
I was always hoping Commodore would make an exciting comeback... what OS does it run on? (Please say Commodore BASIC II Copyright Microsoft Corp 1978)
I'd love to know the OS too. It would make perfect sense (and would instantly reach the top of my wishlist despite the so-so price) if it ran some Amiga OS flavor with a state of the art multimedia / internet software suite.
Runs XP, linux? Bah... not worth getting one just for the C= logo.
D'oh,. I'm thinking ultraportable amiga now...
This is a bit sad actually. In its hayday, Commodore was never a company to play catchup. They were innovators. Read "On The Edge, The spectacular rise and fall of Commodore" by Brian Bagnall
A "netbook" running Windows? Shame.
Rest in peace big C.
I hope it has an external floppy drive that half the size of newjersey - for old times sake. Btw - amiga was not originally made by commodore. Commodore bought the company and rights and then marketed it.
Are you keeping up with the Commodore, cause the Commodore is keeping up with you
How they can produce a machine that has all the features from 2008 but looks like straight out of 1989 is a mystery to me. I really would have hoped Commodore stayed dead so we could remember it for the great thing the C64 was. All this is, is a zombie version of an old successful brand stuck on some random carcass to give it the illusion of life. No thanks.
They should've called it the Ameeega 500
Also where's the Floppy Drive? Bonus points if its 5 1/4".
But can it play Raid on Bungeling Bay.
I gave up on the amiga at least 15 years ago, does anyone really care about them anymore?
Yeup... My heavily modified Amiga 2000 still runs great 20 years after I got it and is running next to a couple of Ubuntu and FreeBSD boxes(Seriously). I also have a working Amiga 1000 and Amiga 500, though those are both boxed at the moment. I have to work with Windows PCs during the day, but in off hours I collect older computers from a time when hardware and OS's were interesting. I still have an original C64 too, though that one hasn't been out of the box in a while.
It's kind of a mixed bag when they re-brand computers with deceased brands like this. It's great that they pay homage to to the name, but at the same time..it's just a PC in a cheap C64 costume. I always kind of felt the same way about the PowerPC-based Linux-based "Amigas" that came out after Escom, eg AmigaOne. To me that's not an Amiga at all. In fact a Windows or generic Linux PC can run a real Amiga OS through emulators better than those can.
Hm... if I was to buy a netbook, this would be a nice one to buy... would be a nice gesture for me to give something back to the company (well now it's just a name & logo) that got me interrested in computers and gave me a lot of good yeas with great games (Amiga 500 for life! :P )
