Fujitsu 8.9-inch LifeBook P1630 sashays into the FCC's lair
Fujitsu's looking to keep its typically small and light P-series alive by dumping the wee P1630 into the FCC's oh-so-capable hands. Based on the filed documentation, the unit will possess a 8.9-inch 1,280 x 768 resolution display, a 1.4GHz Core 2 Duo SU9400 processor, Intel's GMA X4500 graphics set, up to 2GB of RAM, a fingerprint reader, WiFi / Bluetooth, Ethernet and a smattering of ports including SD, VGA out, USB (x2) and PCMCIA. The 2.2-pound lappie doesn't have any sort of official price or release date, but eager LifeBook fanatics can rest assured that it's closer to commercial release today than it was yesterday. Er, before it hit the FCC. Never mind.

It certainly isn't going to be small and light on the pricing.
Fujitsu has a lot of experience with notebooks this small, and it shows. The keyboard looks great, the specs are great, everything will work great.
The only problem is, why couldn't they apply that expertise to the Amilo Mini? Now that's a crap-ass netbook. Plus this thing will cost way too much.
Looks good. The specs sounds good. I-m wondering if the price will look/sound better.
If you read the price is will look better, if someone tells you the price or it's on a radio ad, it will sound better, if it appears as a TV or web commercial then it will both look and sound better. I hope this clarifies the matter.
They could have washed their hands/cleaned the screen before taking the picture!
ok, another cool looking netbook that is somewhere just around the corner and will be better than all the others that have been seen in 'coming soon' articles all over the web.
and from fujitsu, we can be pretty sure this is not aimed at the eee market, pricewise
This is dissapointing. Was hoping for Active Digitizer, more ram, better camera and a better price point.
@Rockville
No. Freaking. Kidding. I would have been happy with JUST the active digitizer at this point. On a side note, does anyone know of a tablet in this form factor (8.9" or less) that has an active digititzer?
I fell in love with my p1510 couple years back, but now I am pretty ready to upgrade. I was hoping for a bit more RAM. I had to dump Windows and install linux to gain some performance as P1510 can run only with 1GB. Looks like that with P1630 I'll have to follow the same pattern - especially if it's gonna come Vista preinstalled. On the other hand - the processor, graphics and screen resolution are a pleasant surprise.
This is a great laptop, but with those specs, this laptop is going to be around $1500 or so.
At last, one - and the only one, AFAIK - manufacturer that understands that notebooks this size *absolutely* need a pointing stick: bravo Fujitsu. This is the only netbook in my list.
But keep it mind it won't have netbook pricing. The previous P1620 and P1610 models started at $1500 minimum, like the Vaio TZ and similar higher end ultraportables.
I used to be obsessed with Lifebook P1000's and p1600s. But you have to admit, netbooks cut directly into this market. Especially the Gigabyte M912V. The only significant difference between the two machines is that the fingerprint reader and the processor.
Well, OK, the graphics are going to be a lot better on the p, also. But how many deals is that going to break? (Though maybe if you insisted on having it has a portable WoW console).
So... this is a tablet?
Been waiting for this one for a while hoping they might do something along these lines(camera, 3G, hopefully 802.11n). I have an old P1510 and love it. Netbooks are great and cheap but the usability of the touch panel is what makes the difference, never had issues with the passive touch panel either. I have only put one scratch on it in over 2 years. I'm willing to pay some more for the touch panel, over a non-touch panel model. The larger res screen is also great as the 600 pixels high one on the P1510 can cause issues with some poorly written apps (MS Streets and Trips, Windows Home Server Console) that don't scale correctly.
